Celebrate National Hat Day on January 15 Every Year
Love hats? Then today’s your day. Show off your hat style on National Hat Day.
But please note, this is National Hat Day, not International Hat Day, which is celebrated on November 25. You lucky, lucky hat lovers. You get two days to celebrate!
Hate hats? What’s wrong with you! (just kidding, we’re actually not big hat fans, either). You have permission to skip celebrating this day.
Or maybe you just haven’t found the right hat to go with your personality.
After all, hats are both practical and stylish (sometimes). Hats can:
- Keep your head warm
- Cover bald spots
- Disguise a bad hair day (although they may more often cause them!)
- Keep the sun out of your eyes (with a wide enough brim)
It’s not clear who started Hat Day or when. We suspect a hat-lover wanted to show off his (or her) hats!
A Few Fun Hat Facts
The design and manufacture of hats is called “millinery.”
In the 18th century the best hats came from Milan, Italy … thus the name “milliner” for hat-makers.
Millinery was traditionally a woman’s job.
Hats were once an indicator of the wearer’s social status.
Although it’s considered impolite for men to wear hats indoors, women may keep theirs on in most cases.

How to Celebrate National Hat Day
Individuals
Of course you’re going to want to wear a hat. Or maybe several, changing them throughout the day!
Depending on your personality (and your workplace, if you’re going to wear it to work) you may want to choose one that makes you look stylish, silly or edgy. Or switch it up as the day goes on.
Make sure you get pictures of yourself in your hat(s). Everyone will want to see.
Get a group of friends together and go out wearing your favorite hats. Vote on who has the best hat. Treat that person to dinner/drinks/whatever.
If you want to win, we’d suggest not wearing this hat (unless the contest is for most annoying hat!):
Companies
If you sell hats, this is the perfect day to promote one or a few styles. Or help people understand the different styles and when/where to wear them.
Have a hat contest. Give prizes for best looking, silliest, biggest, etc.
Use your imagination and have fun with it.

[…] National Hat Day: At one time your outfit just wasn’t complete without a hat! This was true for both men and women, although women’s hats were often much more elaborate than men’s.
