What to Celebrate February 19 thru 25, 2018

Things to celebrate in February

February Celebrations
Celebration ideas for February 19 – 25

It’s hard to believe February is more than half done. In fact it’s the last full week of February!

Wasn’t it just New Years?!?

But here we are just the same. Some of us still snowed in (happily it’s melting, even if slowly!). But maybe this week’s curling & skiing days might help?

No matter what, we’re all excited to tackle another week … we are all excited, right?

This week we also get to eat more delicious foods. Protect animals. Celebrate our humanity. And remember history.

Plus more. As usual, take a look & see what offbeat holidays catch your fancy.

And enjoy!

Celebrate For the Rest of February

As we move through the 2nd half of February we still have plenty of time to celebrate monthly holidays of good food and friendly laughs. Seems like a delightful way to spend the rest of the month!

Sweet Potato Month: Get creative with sweet potatoes! Baking isn’t the only way to enjoy them. They’re equally good sweet or savory, for any meal of the day. And you still have plenty of time left this month to experiment!

National Laugh-Friendly Month: Originally created to promote friendly business practices and customer service, this idea is also appropriate for everyday life! Laughter is fantastic, but not at someone else’s expense. So make your laughter friendly … Always!

National Hot Breakfast Month: There’s nothing better than a filling hot breakfast on a cold winter day. Cold cereal just isn’t the same! (I know February may be summer for some of you … but a hot breakfast is still good!). Even if you can’t manage it every morning, try to slow down & enjoy a hot breakfast a few times a week.

Weekly Celebrations For Feb. 19 to Feb. 25

This week we work to stop animal abuse, celebrate humanity’s differences and similarities, and cheer on cross-country skiers.

National Justice for Animals Week (Feb. 25 – March 3): The Animal Legal Defense Fund dedicates this week every year to raising awareness of animal abuse & how to stop it. The ALDF fights against abuse of all animals, not just pets. It starts at the end of this week & runs through the following Saturday.

Brotherhood / Sisterhood Week (Feb. 18 – 24): Held the 3rd week in February and sponsored by the National Conference for Community and Justice. This week was created as a time for people of all faiths to affirm their brotherhood while also recognizing their differences.

American Birkenbeiner Race (Feb. 22 – 25): The largest cross-country ski marathon in North America. The actual Birkenbeiner happens on the 24th. But plenty of other races & activities fill out the rest of the days. If you’re near Hayward, Wisconsin, consider coming out to cheer on the racers!

Celebration Days Coming Up For Feb. 19 thru Feb. 25

Just because February’s winding down doesn’t mean the chances to celebrate are. No! There’s still plenty to celebrate.

Chocolate, chili, and wine (but not just any wine!). Delicious days indeed.

A weird sport. And an even weirder way to chase away winter. Might as well have some fun with it. :)

Also more serious topics, from historical anniversaries to social justice, protecting languages, and doing our part to keep plastic waste out of the environment.

Take a look and plan your week!

February 19:

Chocolate Mint Day: Indulge in chocolaty, minty treats today!

Iwo Jima Day: The US Marine Corps landed on the island of Iwo Jima on this day in 1945. AP photographer Joe Rosenthal took the iconic picture of 5 Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the US flag on Mt. Suribachi 4 days later on Feb. 23.

February 20:

National Love Your Pet Day: Yes, yes, yes. This is every day in your house. We get it! But just the same, give your pets extra love today. Or sign up to volunteer at a shelter to help homeless pets feel some love today and for many more days.

Northern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day: According to Tom & Ruth Roy of Wellcat, on Feb. 20 you must yell “Hoodie-Hoo” at noon to chase away winter. Well, I’m willing to give it a try!

World Day of Social Justice: Help promote peaceful and prosperous coexistence with your neighbors, fellow countrymen, and all countries of the world.

February 21:

International Mother Language Day: A UN-sponsored day to “promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.”

February 22:

World Thinking Day: This is a Girl Scout day, when scouts think about what it means to be part of a global community. This year’s theme is “Impact.” Can you help your local troop achieve its goals for making an impact?

National Chili Day: Not to be confused with National Chili Month celebrated in October. But the goal is the same: Enjoy chili! Make it, buy it, or get someone else to make it for you. Beef, chicken, or vegetarian … it doesn’t matter, just eat chili today.

The Great American Spit Out: A day promoting tobacco-free lives. This day focuses specifically on smokeless tobacco use and how you can quit.

February 23:

International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day: This holiday is all for your dogs. Let them appreciate all the dog biscuits they want today! Or at least an extra one or two. :)

Curling is Cool Day: Yes, we’re talking about the rather bizarre winter sport. You know, the one you only hear about every 4 years during the Olympics? Well this year the Men’s Bronze Medal Game and 2 women’s semi-final games are being played on Curling is Cool Day. Why not check one out?

Skip the Straw Day: They don’t seem dangerous, do they? Those little plastic tubes we sip drinks through? But they add more than you’d think to our plastic pollution problem. So a group of middle school students in Whitehall, MI decided we need a day to skip the straw. So now the 4th Thursday in February is that day!

February 24:

World Bartender Day: Appreciate your bartender today! Especially if you’re a regular at his or her bar. Give a smile, say thank you, and maybe even leave a bigger tip.

Open that Bottle Night: Well, Feb. 24 is apparently a day for drinking! “That Bottle” in this case refers to that special bottle of wine you’re saving for a special occasion. Tonight’s that occasion! So gather friends and family and just enjoy.

Forget-Me-Not Day: Although Forget Me Not Day has been celebrated in November for decades, the very first observation was on February 24, 1926. So today we celebrate that anniversary.

February 25:

Chocolate Covered Peanuts Day: A day to enjoy chocolate covered peanuts. Or any nut, really. Because the day’s alternate name is Chocolate Covered Nuts Day!
