What to Celebrate February 26 thru March 4, 2018
The year’s 2nd month is winding down.
But the opportunities for celebrations & observations aren’t slowing down one bit.
Monthly celebrations include guinea pigs and caffeine. And ideas! But not just having ideas. Doing something with your ideas.
This week we also have food days, animal days, and disease awareness days. Plus anti-bullying, Dr. Seuss, and simplifying your life. And much more.
Enjoy!
Celebrate All During March
You still have a few days left to get in activities for sweet potatoes, haiku, feeding the birds, and others.
But March arrives this week, and with it whole new monthly celebrations. So get ready! Which of these look good to you?
Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month: Like cats & dogs and other pets, guinea pigs find themselves in shelters through no fault of their own. And you can help make a difference by adopting one (or more!) of these rescued animals instead of supporting backyard breeders. Even if you can’t adopt, you can help support the rescue organizations that help these little animals find loving new homes.
International Ideas Month: Do you have ideas? Of course you do! We all do. But how many people actually remember their ideas for more than a few seconds? Or then act on those ideas? Not many! Well this month is the time to give them some actual thought. See if they could become something real. Because remember …. Everything humans have created (Everything!) was once “just” an idea. Download a free PDF with simple tips for capturing, evaluating, and acting on your ideas here.
Caffeine Awareness Month: Are you aware of caffeine? Most people are! And they swear by the stuff to make it through the day. But this month isn’t so much about making you aware of caffeine itself. It’s more geared toward getting you to think about the caffeine you consume and make informed decisions about how much you drink and eat. It’s sponsored by the Caffeine Awareness Alliance.
Weekly Celebrations For Feb. 26 to March 04
The weekly celebrations this week are all about animals & plants. Honoring the people who give our pets the best care possible when we’re not around. Getting justice for mistreated animals (wild and domestic). And controlling the animals & plants that don’t belong where they’re living.
National Justice for Animals Week (Feb. 25 – March 3): Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund in fighting animal abuse this week. ALDF works year-round to stop all animal abuse, of both domestic and wild animals.
National Invasive Species Awareness Week (Feb. 26 – March4): You might be surprised to learn invasive species are everywhere. Learn more about them & how we can all help control them this week.
Professional Pet Sitters Week (March 4 – 10): This observation starts at the end of this week, on March 4. The week honors professional pet sitters who are committed to providing excellent care for pets. Pet Sitters International started the week way back in 1995, when pet sitting was almost unheard of.
Celebration Days Coming Up For Feb. 26 thru March 04
For Pete’s Sake! There’s so many celebrations to choose from!
Delicious days for eating pistachios, cupcakes, and peanut butter.
Days for honoring and protecting animals, including horses, polar bears, and pigs. And preventing too many unwanted animals by “fixing” your pet.
Days for raising awareness of rare diseases, colorectal cancer, bullying, and more.
Plus celebrating the tooth fairy, employees, grammar, and assorted other ideas, people, animals, etc.
Take a look and enjoy your week!
February 26:
For Pete’s Sake Day: We’ve never figured out who Pete is, but that’s not going to stop us from celebrating! How about you?
World Pistachio Day: If you’re not eating pistachios you’re missing out! They’re delicious & hearth-healthy. So give the a try today. And if you are already eating them, today’s the day to get creative with them!
Cupcake Day: This is actually a Canadian holiday supporting local SPCAs and Humane Societies. The idea is you have a party and supply treats (cupcakes & others!). Attendees make donations to your preferred organization to “bake a difference” for the animals. Sounds like an idea we’d like to see spread!
February 27:
World Spay Day: On the last Tuesday of Prevent a Litter Month comes Spay Day! Now just because your pets are already “fixed,” or too young for the procedure, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. You can still help spread the word!
International Polar Bear Day: Help protect the polar bears! Although not all polar bear populations are in trouble, several definitely are. Others we don’t have enough data on to know how they’re doing.
Anosmia Awareness Day: Did you know anosmia is the loss of your sense of smell? I didn’t! Which demonstrates the need for this day! Most of us probably take our sense of smell for granted. But some people are born without it or lose it later.
February 28:
Rare Disease Day: Learn more about rare diseases and how they affect those who have them. And help spread the word about these diseases … many people have never even heard of most of them!
National Tooth Fairy Day: Did the tooth fairy visit you as a child? Apparently the tooth fairy started out as a tooth mouse.
Pink Shirt Day: This day raises awareness of bullying and promotes kindness. The day began when 2 high school boys decided to support a classmate who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They and dozens of other classmates wore pink shirts the next day. This year’s focus is on cyberbullying.
March 1:
National Horse Protection Day: Help spread awareness of horse slaughter & abuse, and learn how to stop it.
National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day: If you’re just waiting for National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month to roll back around, this day might help make your waiting a little easier! Break out the PB & J and feel like a kid again. Or cook with peanut butter. Bake with peanut butter. Eat a spoonful of the yummy stuff. Just enjoy whatever peanut buttery delight your peanut butter lovin’ heart desires!
National Pig Day: Yes, we are celebrating pigs! (They’re much cleaner animals than many people give them credit for). Two sisters started the day back in 1972 to raise awareness of how important pigs are to humans. Many schools, zoos, & other organizations hold events for this day. Maybe there’s one near you?
March 2:
Dr. Seuss Day: Celebrate Theodore Geissel’s birth on March 2, 1904. Who doesn’t love the man who brought us colorful fish, cats in hats, the Grinch, and so much fun?
Employee Appreciation Day: The 1st Friday in March is a day for employers to appreciate their employees. So do that! Need ideas? Here are 5 from Forbes.
Dress in Blue Day: Blue is the color of colorectal cancer awareness. By dressing in blue you show your support for ending this disease within our lifetime. You can also help the Colorectal Cancer Alliance raise funds to support the mission.
March 3:
What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs? Day: Yes, it’s really a day! And a legitimate question, really. I’m pretty sure they’d run the world within a week.
World Wildlife Day: This UN-created day aims to raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. This year’s theme is “Big cats: predators under threat.” Find some ideas on how to get involved here.
Simplify Your Life Day: A worth goal for almost everyone! (I say almost, because a few people seem to have already managed it). Taking part is simple, according to the website: Just do 3 things to start simplifying your life on the 3rd day of the 3rd month. There’s even a free gift with 33 ideas for you to choose from, if you’re not sure where to start. Of course, it’ll work best if you then keep the momentum going the rest of the year …
March 4:
National Grammar Day: The day’s official website instructs us to “March forth on March 4 to speak well, write well, and help others do the same.” But be gentle when helping others with their grammar!
March Forth and Do Something Day: This day takes its name from the date (get it? March fourth = March forth? … sure you do!). It commands you to march forth and do something big and bold. Something you’ve been putting off. Just … something!
Hug a G.I. Day: This day also commands you to “march forth.” But it also gives you a specific something to do: Say “thank you” to our military service members, past and present. Give a hug, too, if you know the person would welcome one. But do ask first if you don’t know the person personally … not everyone’s a hugger!
