Take a peek and plan your week!
And remember to always …
Enjoy!
Celebrate All August Long
August is marching right along, but once you get your child ready for kindergarten you’ll have plenty of time to read that romance and learn about hair loss. Maybe …
Read-A-Romance Month: For this month dive into a love story (even if it’s not technically a “romance novel”). Apparently this month has themes, and for 2019 it’s The Romance of Reading, The Magic of Books. Seems quite appropriate, since books are definitely magical.
Get Ready for Kindergarten Month: Of course it’s back to school season, but getting ready for kindergarten is special. It’s “real” school, for “big kids”! Both you and your almost-kindergartener are going to need some preparation. Get some tips on preparing your child here. And a few more here.
National Hair Loss Awareness Month: Certainly back-to-school shopping & prep is enough to make anyone tear their hair out! But this month is a bit more serious than that. Both men and women can (and do) experience hair loss. And this month is about learning common causes of hair loss & what treatments may be available to you.
Weekly Celebrations for August 12 thru 18
Apparently August is about romance! Not only are we to read a romance, we are to resurrect romance in our lives.
Would attending Elvis Week and/or Hobo Week count toward resurrecting romance?Absolutely! As long as you both enjoy Elvis and/or hobos.
National Resurrect Romance Week (August 11 – 17, 2019): Six months after Valentine’s Day we revisit romance … without the commercialization of that February day. The day’s founder, Michael Webb, felt that other “romantic” holiday didn’t really focus on the romance any more. So he created a whole week dedicated to just the romance, not the money or the stuff.
Elvis Week (August 9 – 17, 2019): Celebrate the King, his movies, and his music. This annual event always happens during the week that includes the day he died, Aug. 16, 1977. And it always includes a candlelight vigil beginning in the evening on the 15th through the next morning. Tour Graceland, listen to great music (including a tribute band contest), run a 5K, and more.
National Hobo Week (August 8 – 11, 2019): This week coincides with the Hobo Convention every year in Britt, Iowa. If you can make it you’ll find a carnival, craft show, museum, parade, and more. Plus you’ll find real live hobos to talk with at the Hobo Jungle (hobo campsite).
Celebration Days coming up for Aug. 12 thru Aug. 18
In between all your back-to-school prep make sure you leave time for celebrating elephants, honey bees, and black cats. And enjoying filet mignon, fajitas, and rum.
You might also like to learn more about the Navajo code talkers, check your pets’ microchips, and honor the men & women of our military’s airborne divisions.
All these & more are waiting to help you have another fun-tastic week!
August 12:
World Elephant Day: On this day we learn about elephants! How amazing they are. And sadly, how much their survival depends on us to care & work toward protecting them.
Vinyl Record Day: On this day we celebrate “…the Recordings and the Cover Art of the Vinyl Record.” So have a party and play only vinyl while admiring the cover art! Of course, pick your favorite music & cover art to enjoy.
National Julienne Fries Day: On this day we eat fries. But only julienne cut fries. No home fries or waffle fries or any other cuts. Only julienne!
IBM PC Day: Celebrate the introduction of the IBM personal computer to the world. It happened on August 12, 1981. It would take a few more years before these newfangled contraptions caught on, but the revolution had begun!
August 13:
International Left-Handers Day: In a world designed with right-handers in mind, this day is all about the 10% of people who are left-handed. So if you’re left-handed, let everyone know you are to be honored on this day! And if you’re not, why not try doing things left-handed for the day. Or a least a few hours. You’ll discover just how hard it is to use tools made for right-handed people!
National Filet Mignon Day: Enjoy filet mignon for dinner! Cook it yourself or go out to your favorite steak place. Even better, convince a friend or family member to have a Filet Mignon Day party & enjoy the fruits of their labor!
National Prosecco Day: Raise a glass or 2 of Prosecco in a toast to this day. This light sparkling wine probably isn’t going to pair well with your filet mignon, but consider enjoying it with a light appetizer before dinner. Or wind down after dinner with a refreshing glass.
August 14:
National Navajo Code Talkers Day: This day honors the Native Americans who played a critical role in the Allied war effort. Without this group of Navajo Marines World War II may have played out very differently.
National Creamsicle Day: Indulge in a cool, creamy vanilla ice cream bar protected by a frozen fruit juice coating. Just about any fruit flavor will do, but orange is the classic flavor (and a favorite around here!). Buy your favorite flavor or make your own creamsicle (the homemade recipes generally mix the ice cream & juice rather than coating the ice cream with juice).
August 15:
Check the Chip Day: On this day we make sure our pets’ microchip information is up-to-date. And if our pets don’t have chips, we get that done! Or at least make an appointment to have it done. Because a chipped pet is much more likely to find its way home than an unchipped one.
National Relaxation Day: On this day we do only things we find enjoyable and relaxing. No cleaning or bill paying or anything like that. Instead take a walk, have a picnic, grab lunch with friends (ones who won’t stress you out!), or whatever other activities help you relax. If you have a dog, here are some ideas for how to celebrate this day together.
National Lemon Meringue Pie Day: Complete your Relaxation Day by indulging in a slice of sweet & tart lemon meringue pie. Of course, you may have to buy it, since you don’t want to ruin your relaxing with work! Unless, of course, you find baking relaxing. Then by all means, make yourself a lemon meringue pie!
Best Friends Day: This day is different from the Best Friends Day in June and also the Friendship Day in February. This day is all about male best friends! Specifically for the men to have a “Hangin’ Out With The Guys” day. So guys, go plan a day to hang!
August 16:
Tell a Joke Day: On this day we tell jokes! Any kind of joke will do. Although for your audience’s sake, try to make them funny. Please! And listen to others’ jokes too. Even if they’re not very good … or even terrible. Just have fun with it.
National Rum Day: Enjoy rum your favorite way to celebrate this day. And since it’s Friday, you have an extra reason to enjoy your evening! Learn more about rum & find lots of recipes here.
Men’s Grooming Day: Back in 2007 American Crew, maker of men’s grooming products, decided to celebrate the return of men concentrating more on their grooming habits. So it created a day just for men’s grooming needs. Salons & barbershops around the country have specials for the day each year, so why not see if one near you is celebrating?
National Airborne Day: President George W. Bush created this day to honor the US Armed Forces’ airborne divisions and first proclaimed it in 2002. The date celebrates the anniversary of the first official Army parachute jump. It happened on Aug. 16, 1940 at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
August 17:
World Honey Bee Day: The honey bee is critical to many of the foods we eat. So it rightly deserves a day of its own. But the honey bee is also in trouble, as population numbers drop. And colony collapse disorder is still a thing. So honor these hard-working little critters and learn how you can help them.
Black Cat Appreciation Day: Black cats are beautiful, and it’s only right they get their own day. Especially since so many people seem to not like them … think they’re evil or something. But that’s just silly, so use this day to spread the word that black cats are awesome. And if you’re lucky enough to be owned by a black cat, give that feline lots of extra love & treats for this day.
Clear the Shelters: On this date we try to get all the adoptable animals out of shelters and into loving furever homes. Shelters across the country promote their adoptable pets & hold special events to help you find the purr-fect furry addition to your family.
National I LOVE My Feet Day!: This day reminds us to appreciate our feet & how much they help us accomplish. And taking care of them will help them keep taking care of us!
National Thrift Shop Day: Take your pampered feet on a thrift shop shopping spree! And in the spirit of Simply Your Life Week from earlier this month, bring some items to donate to the thrift shop to make room for your new purchases.
Baby Boomers Recognition Day: On this day we celebrate the Boomers and their contributions to our society. If you’re a Boomer, celebrate yourself and your Boomer friends. If not, celebrate any Boomers you know. They really have had a big impact on our world.
August 18:
Bad Poetry Day: Bad poetry is all around us, so we might as well celebrate it! If you’re a bad poet, write some terrible verse. If you’d rather not, then find some bad poetry to read. There’s more published bad poetry than you might think. In fact, you can buy books of bad poetry!
National Fajita Day: Fuel your bad poetry reading/writing with fajitas! Or just make & eat fajitas … poetry not required. You could, of course, also go out for fajitas. If there’s an On the Border Mexican Grill near you visiting it would be appropriate, because that’s who created the day.
National Ice Cream Pie Day: What better way to cool off your mouth after spicy fajitas than with ice cream? And why not make it an ice cream pie to celebrate this cool, creamy day? And even if your fajitas weren’t spicy, have yourself a slice of ice cream pie. Buy one or make one. They’re pretty simple to throw together, as long as you plan ahead for the freezing time.
Serendipity Day: On this day we celebrate the “happy accident.” Except, according to this day’s creator, it’s not an accident at all! Serendipity is something we can all create. And we should expect it in our lives. So Madeleine Kay, the Serendipity Lady, invites us all to live serendipitously. For this day and every day.
