Celebration Ideas for August 2 – 8, 2021

August is here! Well, ok, possibly in a day or two depending on when you’re reading this.

But August means back to school season is officially here. And it looks like for most kids it’ll really be back to school, not just a computer screen in the kitchen or bedroom or wherever. Make sure you’re ready!

And despite the heat, August is also time to anticipate the cooler, crisper air of Autumn. But there’s much more immediate things to anticipate, too. Like celebrating underwear, wiggling your toes, & fresh breath.

So yes, it’s time once again to take a peek & plan your week. And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All August Long

Learn about a couple of chronic illnesses with no cure, remember to prevent the illnesses you can, and celebrate man’s best friend.

Psoriasis Action Month: Psoriasis has finally been getting the attention it deserves in recent years. And better treatments, too. But there’s still more to be done. And August is the month to take action.

National Dog Month: For a whole month we celebrate the ways our dogs improve our lives. From forcing us to exercise by taking them on walks to making us laugh with their silly antics, dogs have a way of making everything seem brighter. Don’t they deserve a month that’s all about them?

National Immunization Awareness Month: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought immunization into everyday conversation. Although those conversations aren’t always productive, and awareness of the actual importance and even useful of the vaccines varies widely. Use this month to learn more about vaccines. All vaccines. And for healthcare professionals, take some time to evaluate your own messaging on vaccines and maybe learn some new techniques to reach patients more effectively.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month: This genetic condition affects the motor neurons in the spine and can literally take patients breath away … as in it causes trouble breathing. It can also affect patients’ ability to eat & walk. Spend some time this month learning more about this potentially deadly disease, and help raise awareness, of both the disease and the need for more research.

Weekly Celebrations for Aug. 2 to 8

Where will you find happiness? In a simplified life? With a service dog that helps you live life with more freedom? Where else? Something to think about—and work toward—this week.

Simplify Your Life Week (August 1 – 7, 2021): Take some time this week to evaluate your life & what things are making it more difficult than it needs to be. Then work on simplifying it! Yes, we know it’s not that simple. But you need to start somewhere, and it might as well be here.

Hunt for Happiness Week (August 1 – 7, 2021): If you’re also celebrating Simplify Your Life Week, the mere act of freeing yourself from mental & physical clutter and other burdens should certainly inspire some happiness. But look around you for other happiness triggers. Once you know what they are, you can seek them out more often & enjoy more happiness!

Assistance Dog Week (August 1 – 7, 2021): Recognize the hardworking, loyal dogs who help people live with fewer limitation. These specially-trained dogs are quite often literal lifesavers, helping people with vision or hearing impairment, mobility problems, and other illnesses or disabilities navigate life with confidence.

Celebration Days coming up for Aug. 2 thru Aug. 8

Make the most of the final weeks of summer by getting outside, wiggling your toes, sleeping under the stars, and letting happiness happen. Fuel all that fun with nuts, watermelon, Jamaican patties, & root beer floats along with much more deliciousness.

So don’t delay in creating another fun-tastic week for yourself.

August 2:

Assistance Dog Day: On the Monday of Assistance Dog Week we celebrate Assistance Dog Day. An extra-special day to honor the dogs & trainers who help people with various challenges live their lives with as few obstacles as possible.

National Coloring Book Day: Coloring is a fun & relaxing activity for anyone of any age. So you shouldn’t need an excuse to do it, but if you do, here it is! Color by yourself or with your kids. Or have a coloring party!

Take a Penny/Leave a Penny Day: If you’re paying with cash & the store has one of those take a penny/leave a penny trays, drop in your excess pennies to help future shoppers. Or take the pennies you need to make exact change. And if there are no trays? Help out someone trying to make exact change if you can.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day: For dessert or a snack, make it an ice cream sandwich for a perfect celebration. You could even make your own ice cream sandwiches for an extra-special celebration!

August 3:

National Night Out: Help build a positive, cooperative relationship between community members and law enforcement. That may seem like a pipe dream in many communities these days. And it’s certainly going to take more than an evening of festivities. But it’s not impossible. And this night out can be a step in the right direction.

National Grab Some Nuts Day: Nuts make a satisfying snack. So when it’s snack time, grab some nuts! They’re also perfect for baking & cooking. And of course they add a delightful flavor & crunch to salads. So grab some nuts all day long, no matter what you’re eating!

National Watermelon Day: In between handfuls of nuts, make sure you grab some slices of refreshing watermelon too.

August 4:

Coast Guard Day: Celebrate the Coast Guard’s founding on August 4, 1790. It was called the Revenue Marine then, and its first order of business was enforcing new tariff laws.

National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day: Celebrate America’s most popular cookie, the chocolate chip cookie. Its creation was a happy accident due to a lack of baking chocolate. But Ruth Wakefield didn’t let that stop her; she used chunks of semi-sweet chocolate instead. And the rest, as they say, is history!

August 5:

National Oyster Day: Celebrate Friday Eve with oysters. Maybe you’ll get lucky & find a pearl?

National Underwear Day: Celebrate this day by wearing underwear! Ok, actually we hope you wear underwear every day (or at least most days?). This day is actually about being comfortable in your underwear. So put on your best, most comfortable underwear to celebrate. And if your underwear has seen better days, consider buying some new, well-fitting underwear! Possibly from Freshpair, creator of this day?

National Work Like a Dog Day: You get to decide how to celebrate this one! There’s the usual meaning of “work like a dog”, which is to work as hard as you can. Then there’s the way dogs really work: not hard at all. In fact, they’re usually lounging about or playing. So decide whether to buckle down or take the day off. Either way you’ll be celebrating right. 🙃

National India Pale Ale (IPA) Day: After your hard day of working like a dog, you deserve an IPA. Or enjoy an IPA while you take the day off & lounge about.

August 6:

National Root Beer Float Day: Pour yourself a tall glass of root beer & top it with a big scoop of ice cream. Then enjoy the rest of your Friday.

National Wiggle Your Toes Day: Kick off your shoes & walk barefoot through the grass or on the beach. And wiggle those toes! Or wear sandals and wiggle your toes all day long. If those aren’t options, at least give your toes a good wiggle in the evening as you wind down from your day.

Twins Day: If you’re one-half of a twin set, celebrate the pair of you! Get together with your twin and do something fun. Especially if you don’t see each other as often as you’d like. And if you can, head to Twinsburg, Ohio for the Twins Days Festival all weekend long!

Hiroshima Day: This day commemorates the day the US dropped an atomic bomb—with the deceptively cute name “Little Boy”—on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. It was the first time any country had used an atomic bomb against another country. Up to 135,000 people died as a result, both in the bombing itself and from radiation exposure later. Now we use the anniversary of this day to promote peace.

National Fresh Breath Day: Is your breath as fresh as it can be? To make sure, always floss at least once a day and brush at least twice a day. If you’re not already doing this, Fresh Breath Day is the perfect day to start! Gum can also help keep your mouth moist & fresh.

International Beer Day: Wind down your week with a well-deserved beer. And unlike IPA Day, for this celebration you get to pick the beer. So of course, you’ll have your favorite beer to celebrate. And you’ll celebrate responsibly. Right?

Braham Pie Day: It’s another day to celebrate the deliciousness that is pies! Homemade pies of course. And if you can make it to Braham, Minnesota to celebrate pies in the “Homemade Pie Capital” do it! Otherwise, celebrate with Minnesotans in spirit and make a pie to enjoy.

August 7:

National Lighthouse Day: Once upon a time lighthouses provided literal beacons of safety to ships approaching shore. They’re mostly obsolete now, but they still offer a sense of nostalgia. Visit one if you can. Or consider supporting lighthouse preservation, before more of these historic structures disappear.

Mead Day: This is the day to drink mead! And maybe even start a batch of your very own mead. Do both if possible!

Purple Heart Day: For this day we take time to remember those service members wounded or killed in combat. Learn a bit more about the Purple Heart here.

National Disc Golf Day: Whether or not you play regular golf, for this celebration you play disc golf. Did you know this game is older than you might think? It actually existed back in the early 1900s. It wasn’t quite the same game we play today, but it did exist! Grab a few friends, find a course, and spend your Saturday having a fun (and competitive, if you’d like!) game of disc golf.

National Play Outside Day: On the first Saturday of every month we play outside! If you’re celebrating Disc Golf Day then you’ve already got this celebration covered. If not, then find something else fun to do outside.

Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day: Commiserate with anyone who’s ever had trouble getting into the preposterous packaging used on some products.

National Mustard Day: If you agree with the National Mustard Museum’s assertion that mustard is the King of Condiments, celebrate it! If you’re near Middleton, WI check out what’s planned & consider attending the museum’s festival. Or tune in to the livestream, and make sure you use mustard in/on everything you eat for the day.

National Raspberries N’ Cream Day: As dessert or as a snack, raspberries n’ cream is light & refreshing. Enjoy!

National Jamaican Patty Day: If you love savory fillings in a flaky crust this is the day for you! Jamaican patties are a kind of hand pie, so you can enjoy them anywhere & any time! As long as one of those times is on Aug. 7 each year. 😋

August 8:

Odie Day: Celebrate Odie’s birthday in spectacular fashion! The cartoon pup turns 43 this year.

Dalek Day: You don’t have to wait until Dalek Remembrance Day in December to celebrate these wonderfully weird aliens! In honor of Terry Nation we celebrate his beloved creations on his birthday.

International Cat Day: Cats around the world demand the absolute idolization they deserve from their human caretakers. So if you’re owned by a cat, your one & only job for the day is to cater to its every wish.

Happiness Happens Day: For this happy day, simply raise a toast to happiness! What could be simpler?

National CBD Day: cbdMD founded this day when most people probably hadn’t ever heard of CBD … back in the dark ages of 2018! The idea was to raise awareness of this product. Today you’ve probably heard of it, but you may not truly understand it. So take some time to learn & consider if it may be right for you.

National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day: If you grow zucchini you probably have more than you can handle by now. So give it away to your neighbors. They don’t want it because they also have too much? Give it to them anyway! In the dead of night sneak over there & leave some at their front doors. 😉 You can thank Tom & Ruth Roy of Wellcat.com for this creative solution to offloading your excess zucchini!

Global Sleep Under the Stars Night: After sneaking zucchini onto your neighbor’s porch, get a good night’s sleep under the stars. Pitch a tent in the yard or head out for a camping trip. As long as you’re outside you’re celebrating right.

National Fried Chicken and Waffles Day: You know what you have to eat for this one, right?

National Frozen Custard Day: And for dessert it’s frozen custard. Not ice cream! Custard. Mmmmm …
