What to Celebrate August 9 thru 15, 2021
Hoo-wee, it’s been a long week!
So we’re just going to invite you to take a peek and plan your week. But we’ll never forget to remind you to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate All August Long
Do pirates each goat cheese & sandwiches and care about water quality? Of course they do!
Arrr-gust: International Pirate Month: Make like a pirate all month. Or at least one day during the month. And raise some money for charity while you’re at it.
National Goat Cheese Month Goat cheese adds a creamy tang to everything from salads & sandwiches to pastas & pizza. Whether you already love it or have never tried it, find new ways to use it this month. Find a whole month’s worth of ideas here.
National Water Quality Month: Fresh, clean water is a surprisingly scarce resource on a planet that has more water than land. But only about 3% of all that water is fresh water—the kind we need for drinking & cooking & growing food & basically everyday life. Take some time this month to learn more about protecting this vital resource.
National Sandwich Month: Get creative with your sandwiches this month. Use goat cheese on at least a few of them!
Weekly Celebrations for August’s 2nd Week
Stay safe & sound at work then enjoy romance on your time off. Sounds like an amazing week!
Safe + Sound Week (August 9 – 15, 2021): This week is all about keeping employees safe & sound. Sign up your company to help raise awareness of the importance of worker’s health & safety, get your company recognized for its health & safety programs, and even get get programs started if you don’t already have any in place.
National Resurrect Romance Week (August 8 – 14, 2021): Six months after that over-commercialized holiday known as Valentine’s Day comes a week that encourages us to focus on real romance. Don’t worry so much about spending money & buying “the perfect gift”. Instead spend time together. Make memories together. And remember, often the “cheap dates” are the most memorable ones!
Celebration Days coming up for Aug. 9 thru Aug. 15
Read books, be lazy, and play in the sand. Protect lions & elephants. Get great deals at garage sales & thrift shops. And of course enjoy good food & drink.
All this & more is waiting for you to make it another fun-tastic week.
August 9:
Book Lovers Day: You know this is a simple one to celebrate, right? Read a book! Or buy a book (or 2 or 10). Browse a used book store. Or your local library. Basically, surround yourself with books!
National Veep Day: On this date in 1974 a man who was never elected either Vice-President or President became President of the United States. The man was Gerald Ford. And he became President because Richard Nixon had just resigned. But the only reason he was in that position was because Nixon’s Vice President, Spiro Agnew, had resigned in 1973. Ford got the Vice Presidency by appointment. So this day celebrates both our order of succession plan for the Presidency and this man who achieved the highest position in the country without ever being elected to an office in that plan.
International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: Indigenous peoples are about 6.2 percent of the world’s population. And their diversity of cultures and languages is amazing. But they tend to get marginalized and have suffered disproportionately during the pandemic. Which is why this year’s theme for the day is Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract.
National Rice Pudding Day: If you’ve spent the day reading (maybe partly about presidents & indigenous peoples?), then you’ll want something simple for dinner. Or at least dessert. Make it rice pudding! As long as you make sure you have pre-cooked rice on hand, it’s pretty simple to make.
August 10:
National S’mores Day: A delicious & self-explanatory day: Make & eat s’mores. Yum!
World Lion Day: Celebrate the magnificence of the lion. And help conservation efforts, too if you can.
National Lazy Day: If you feel like you need an excuse to be lazy, here it is! Enjoy.
National Shapewear Day: Wear your favorite, most comfortable shapewear to feel fabulous all day. Don’t have comfortable shapewear (or any shapewear)? Buy some! You won’t regret it … as long as you don’t settle for the uncomfortable stuff.
National Duran Duran Appreciation Day: Celebrate everybody’s favorite ’80s band! Ok, yes. We know: Not everybody loved them. If you didn’t, just skip this one. But if you did (and still do!) get Hungry Like the Wolf on Planet Earth with The Wild Boys asking Is There Something I Should Know …
August 11:
Play in the Sand Day: Being a kid is not a requirement for this one. Playing in the sand is fun no matter your age! So get out there & enjoy the sand.
Global Kinetic Sand Day: If you can’t get to the beach & don’t have a sandbox, you can still play with sand! (Or play with this sand after the beach) Just see what you and your kids can do with this amazing sand.
Presidential Joke Day: No, this is not the day for calling the president a joke. It is, however, a day for recognizing the humor that sometimes comes out of a president’s mouth. Sometimes it’s a deliberate joke. Other times it’s unintentional. But it’s always funny to someone
National Raspberry Bombe Day: After playing in the sand all day, treat yourself to a Raspberry Bombe for dessert! You may want to have some else make your raspberry bombe (so you have more time for playing 😁).
August 12:
World Elephant Day: African and Asian elephant populations need our help to survive! Won’t you do your part to help? At least help raise awareness of the fight for survival these amazing animals face?
National Vinyl Record Day: Commemorate Thomas Edison’s 1877 invention of the phonograph! Many music lovers swear recordings sound better on vinyl. If you agree, play some real, vinyl records to celebrate. Or head out to a record store (if there’s one nearby) to browse.
IBM PC Day: Celebrate the birth of the home computing era, August 12, 1981. That was the day IBM introduced the IBM 5150 personal computer at a press conference. It cost $1565! Now technically the personal computer (not from IBM) had existed for several years, but this was the first one that appealed to regular people.
National Middle Child Day: For one day out of the year middle children everywhere get all the attention that usually passes them by. Older & younger siblings alike must shower their middle sibs with adoration.
National Julienne Fries Day: Any fries you have for this day must be julienne style. No waffle fries, home fries, wedges, or anything else. Only thin, crispy julienne fries allowed!
August 13:
Blame Someone Else Day: Most of the time it’s absolutely best to take responsibility and face the consequences. But on Aug. 13 we get to blame someone else! Ahhh … the freedom to screw up and walk away scot-free. Joyous!
International Lefthander’s Day: Lefthanders unite! This is the day you get to stand out in a positive way … instead of because you’re fumbling about trying to use products designed for a right-handed world.
National Prosecco Day: After a rough day of blaming others you deserve to wind down with a glass of wine. Make it a Prosecco.
National Filet Mignon Day: Do you also deserve a Filet Mignon? Of course you do! And since Prosecco is a sparkling wine, it’s perfect to serve with this meal. At least according to some top chefs.
August 14:
National Navajo Code Talkers Day: Celebrate the 29 Navajo who may very well have been the difference between the Allies winning WWII and losing.
National Spirit of ’45 Day: Celebrate the World War II generation on the anniversary of the day in 1945 President Truman announced the War was over.
Free Comic Book Day: If your local comic book shop is participating in this day, go get yourself a free comic book!
National Garage Sale Day: On the 2nd Saturday in August the whole country is either holding a garage sale or finding great deals at a garage sale. Some of you may even do both!
National Bowling Day: We’re pretty sure you can figure out how to spend your Saturday. After your garage sales, that is!
National Creamsicle Day: Cool off from all your celebrating on a hot August day with a refreshing orange & vanilla frozen treat. You’re welcome.
August 15:
National Relaxation Day: Saturday is a busy, busy day. So slow down & relax for Sunday.
Check the Chip Day: Are your pets microchipped? If not, get that done ASAP! Yes, including indoor cats … they can and do get out and then get lost. This day is also a reminder to make sure your registration information is correct. If you’ve moved and/or changed phone numbers, update your info!
Best Friends Day: This is a day for men to “hang with the guys”, in other words, spend time with their best friends. Of course, we’re pretty sure nobody’s going to stop you from spending time with your best friends, regardless of gender.
National Lemon Meringue Pie Day: Make lemon meringue pie. Then devour it. You’re welcome.
