Celebration Ideas for January 14 – 20, 2018

How’s your January going so far?

Are you keeping your resolutions? Did you even make any!? … We didn’t.

Well, except for continuing to share fun, delicious, serious, and just plain interesting celebrations & observations with you. And so far that’s going great!

Hopefully your year is also on the right track, whatever that may be.

So let’s just jump right into the fun. Go take a peek and plan your week. And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of January

During this first month of the year we celebrate hobbies and creativity of all kinds. It manages to be both relaxing and inspiring at the same time!

National Mail Order Gardening Month: If you’re a gardener you probably get gardening catalogs. And if you don’t get catalogs, you have your favorite gardening websites bookmarked. And you’re getting impatient for gardening weather to arrive. But even if you can’t plant yet, you can plan. And the whole month of January is devoted to just that. Enjoy!

National Hobby Month: Even if gardening’s not your hobby you can still celebrate this month. Because January is also devoted to celebrating whatever hobby you have. And of course doing that hobby. Or if there’s a hobby you’ve been considering trying, this is the month to do that too!

International Creativity Month: According to this month’s founder, creativity is “vital for personal and business success…” So even if you’re not artistically creative you may be creative in other ways. Creativity in problem solving is a valuable asset no matter who you are & what you do!

Weekly Celebrations for January’s 3rd Week

This week is about saying thank you, looking a bit silly, and enjoying non-alcoholic deliciousness while you do it.

And in the spirit of the week, we’d like to thank our readers. We hope you love the holidays we share as much as we love discovering them & bringing them to you!

International Thank You Days (January 11 – 18): This one’s simple! But not necessarily always easy. Say thank you to people who have helped you. Or who are helping you.

National Mocktail Week January 13 – 19): Days to celebrate alcoholic drinks abound, but it’s harder to find celebrations of non-alcoholic drinks. So we applaud Marnie Rae, who created this week just last year. Spend it enjoying the non-alcoholic versions of your favorite cocktails.

Cuckoo Dancing Week (January 11 – 17): Have you heard of the Cuckoo Dance? This is the week to celebrate it! If you’re not familiar with this Laurel & Hardy dance, here it is:

Celebration Days coming up for Jan. 14 thru Jan. 20

We start this week on a productive note, cleaning off our desks. And being a little silly too. We end it with a mix of seriousness & chilly entertainment.

In between we learn some history, have some fun, and maybe even relax a bit.

And deliciousness runs throughout it all.

So let’s keep this still-new year moving along right and have another fun-tastic week!

January 14:

National Clean Off Your Desk Day: On the 2nd Monday in January we tackle the often overwhelming job of trying to find the tops of our desks! And/or tame the proliferation of icons on our computer desktops.

Dress Up Your Pet Day: It’s time to make your pet look silly, cute, or glamorous again! As long as your pet agrees, of course. So does your pet like dressing up? Our pets object strongly to the idea, so we’ll need to skip this one. 😕

Ratification Day: This day commemorates the ratification of the Second Treaty of Paris in 1784, officially ending the American Revolution. Technically fighting had ended in April 1783, but the war was not officially over until the treaty had been signed. The Treaty also formally recognized the United States as a sovereign nation.

National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day: Start your week off right by enjoying a hot pastrami sandwich for lunch. Or dinner if you prefer! Having it on rye bread isn’t strictly necessary, but why would you want it on anything else?!

January 15:

National Hat Day: Do you wear hats? Wear your favorite to celebrate this day. Don’t wear hats? Consider wearing one for this one day anyway. A fun hat can be a great way to lighten your mood!

National Booch Day: What the heck’s a booch?! Kombucha, of course! And starting this year this fermented drink has its very own day. Kombucha producer KeVita created this day and is offering a buy one-get one downloadable coupon in honor of the day.

National Bagel Day: If you’ve been celebrating bagels on Feb 9, prepare to change your ways. Thomas’® Bagels is tired of bagels having to share a day with pizza, and apparently lots of bagel fans agree. So National Bagel Day has moved to Jan. 15. Celebrate with bagels! And bagels can go from breakfast to lunch to dinner with ease. Just change the toppings! So you can celebrate bagels all day.

January 16:

Religious Freedom Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. This document laid the groundwork for our Constitution’s 1st Amendment. And your right to freely practice your religion … or no religion at all.

National Fig Newton Day: Celebrate this day by eating some of the fig-filled pastries named for a town in Massachusetts. Did you know people were eating roll versions of these little cookies long before someone created a machine to make the little squares we know & love today?

Appreciate a Dragon Day: It’s back! Show your favorite dragon some appreciation for this day. (What do you mean you don’t have a favorite dragon??! … Find one! Then appreciate it).

National Nothing Day: Apparently this is supposed to be a day when you don’t have to celebrate/honor anything. But unless you plan to skip Newtons & dragons (that’s gonna’ make your dragon mad! Or sad.) that’ll be hard to pull off.

January 17:

Cable Car Day: Cable cars were (and really still are!) amazing feats of engineering. They do deserve a day of their own. True cable cars exist only in San Francisco these days, although some other cities still run streetcars.

National Bootlegger’s Day: Celebrate the birth of Templeton Rye Whiskey on this date in 1920. It shares a birthday with Al Capone, who proclaimed the aged & flavorful whiskey “The Good Stuff” from Iowa.

Popeye Day: Celebrate the day in 1929 when Popeye the Sailor Man (admit it, you sang his name) made his first comic strip appearance. How? With some classic Popeye cartoons, of course! (They didn’t come along until later, but we’re not gonna’ be picky here).

Judgment Day: Tom & Ruth Roy of Wellcat suggest we have an annual Judgment Day in which we judge ourselves. If we’re honest with ourselves we now have time to get better before the ultimate Judgment Day.

January 18:

Winnie the Pooh Day: Celebrate the bear with little brain (but a huge heart!) who lives for hunny. So eat some honey & read some Pooh stories (or watch a Pooh movie) for this day.

National Thesaurus Day: Celebrate the birthday of Peter Mark Roget, without whom we’d never have had Roget’s Thesaurus. And then how would we know the right synonyms to sprinkle throughout our written and spoken works? Or … According to what would we be schooled in the justifiable equivalents to intersperse far and wide in our composed plus vocalized machinery? 🤔 (Not all synonyms are created equal!).

National Peking Duck Day: Head out to your favorite Chinese restaurant and enjoy a scrumptious meal of mouthwatering tender duck with amazingly crispy skin.

January 19:

Popcorn Day: Popcorn! Yes, you’ll need to pop some corn & add your favorite toppings to celebrate this day the right way. And as long as your don’t overdo those toppings, popcorn is filling & low calorie so you don’t have to feel guilty about celebrating!

Tin Can Day: This day apparently honors the humble tin can, first patented on August 25, 1810 in Britain. It revolutionized food preservation and especially helped sailors, who no longer had to eat only salted meat and hardtack for most of their journeys. Why Jan. 19 and not Aug. 25? We’re not sure …

World Quark Day: No, scientists, this day does not celebrate the subatomic particles. It doesn’t have anything to do with the content automation software, either. The Quark we celebrate this day is a food. A dairy food to be exact. One that’s kinda’ like yogurt, kinda’ like sour cream, low-fat, high-protein, and incredibly versatile. And although you may never have heard of it (or maybe you have!), Quark is not a new food. Learn more about Quark here.

January 20:

Penguin Awareness Day: Penguins are awesome & fascinating birds! And sadly lots of them are also in danger of extinction. So celebrate this day by learning more about them (like how many different species there are) and how we can help them. Find some live webcams of them too!

World Snow Day: Celebrate snow! Well, actually snow sports, like skiing and snowboarding. If you love this idea, see if there’s an event near you. Sadly it looks like the US isn’t too active in this day. But even if there isn’t an event near you, if you have snow get out in it! And maybe consider organizing an event for next year?

National Cheese Lover’s Day: A day for cheese lovers everywhere to enjoy their favorite cheeses. And there’s so many to choose from … brie, gouda, fontina, feta, Havarti, cheddar, colby, and Monterey jack to name just a few. So go ahead, indulge in your love of cheese all day. 🧡
