Celebration Ideas for January 21 – 27, 2018

The last full week of January is just a couple days away!

And it offers plenty of deliciousness & fun. Some seriousness, too.

Whether you’re in the mood to do a financial checkup, hunt for happiness, or have a conversation with your cat, we’ve got you covered.

Squirrels, pie, handwriting, and compliments also get their due. Plus much more.

So jump right in to take a peek and plan your week. And whatever you choose, remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of January

Whether or not you make resolutions for the new year, the start of the year is still a good time to review things like health & finances. Which may be why January is awareness month for several different health & financial topics.

National Blood Donor Month: Hospitals & medical centers need blood & platelets all year. But donations tend to drop in January. Start off the year by doing your part (if you can) to keep the country’s blood supply healthy.

Cervical Health Awareness Month: Have you been getting your Pap Test and/or HPV test as recommended by your doctor? This is the month to make sure you and your female family members & friends are doing just that.

Financial Wellness Month: With tax season just ahead (or already here), you’re no doubt looking at your finances already. So take the extra step & reevaluate your spending and saving plan to make sure they’re still working for you. And make changes if they’re not.

Weekly Celebrations for Jan. 21 thru 27

For this week we eat meat, clean out our inboxes, and hunt for happiness.

Of course, eating meat and cleaning out inboxes can each lead to plenty of happiness. So by celebrating one or both you’ve got the 3rd covered too! ;)

Meat Week (January 20 – 27, 2019): Feast on meat all week! If your city has a Meat Week captain, check out the schedule & plan to join in for a night or 2 (or all 8!). If not, eat meat anyway & celebrate unofficially … then consider being a captain next year to coordinate a meaty feast in your city.

Hunt For Happiness Week (January 20 – 26, 2019): Brought to you by the Secret Society of Happy People, this week encourages you to find/recognize more happiness in your life. The society has a Practical Happiness theme for 2019 and is keeping that same theme for this week. You can sign up to receive daily challenges during the week too. So here’s to a happier end of January and year in general!

Clean Out Your Inbox Week (January 20 – 26, 2019): Spend this week doing as the same says. We’ve actually been slowly slogging through multiple inboxes all month. But this week could be the necessary push to finally finish! How about you?

Celebration Days coming up for Jan. 21 thru Jan. 27

Animals, kindness, fun, and deliciousness. It’s all here!

Which means there’s something for almost everyone. And plenty of inspiration to make it another fun-tastic week.

January 21:

Squirrel Appreciation Day: Do you appreciate squirrels? You should! They’re quite smart. Also fun & fascinating … if you can get past the part where they steal the birds’ food!

National Hugging Day: Hugging has actual health benefits, and this is the day to give and get hugs all day long! But do make sure any hugs you give are welcome; not everyone is equally comfortable with hugs. Keven Zaborney created this day back in 1986. He wasn’t sure it would catch on, but it has.

MLK Day of Service: In 1994 Congress expanded the MLK birthday celebration with the King Holiday and Service Act. The federal holiday is also a day of service, encouraging people to use their day off to serve others.

Granola Bar Day: Fuel your day of service, hugging, and squirrel appreciation with energy-dense granola bars! Stock up on your favorites, or consider making these Granola Maple Bars.

January 22:

National Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day: Do your cats ask you questions? Of course they do! If you think otherwise you’re just not listening. So this is the day when you sit down with your furballs & answer all their questions.

National Blonde Brownie Day: If you love “blondies” this is your day! And even if you prefer the traditional chocolate brownies, switch it up for this day. Blonde brownies’ rich vanilla & molasses flavor is supremely satisfying. Try this simple recipe to celebrate the day.

January 23:

National Pie Day: What’s your favorite pie? Indulge in the deliciousness all day! Or try a new pie (we won’t tell on you). And “pie” can be either sweet or savory. So technically you can have pie for your meal (a meat pie, for example) and again for dessert (apple, pecan, cherry …).

National Handwriting Day: On John Hancock’s birthday we celebrate handwriting. (Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence 1st, and he had a big, bold signature … and come to think of it, big & bold was quite appropriate considering what he was signing!). So celebrate this day by stepping away from the keyboard for at least a little while & picking up a pen to write by hand.

Library Shelfie Day: Take a picture of yourself with your favorite bookshelf (or any bookshelf, really!) and post it on social media. Remember to tag your post(s) with #LibraryShelfieDay ! The New York Public Library started this day in 2014. See some of the library’s favorite 2018 pics here.

January 24:

Change a Pet’s Life Day: Help homeless pets for this day. Adopt if you can (getting animals adopted is the main reason for the day). Or sign up to foster or volunteer. Rescues & shelters also always welcome donations (money or supplies).

National Peanut Butter Day: Add more peanut butter to your life for this day. Make peanut butter pancakes for breakfast, or add it to your oatmeal. Have a PB & J sandwich for lunch. Or a peanut butter & banana smoothie. For dinner try chicken satay with peanut sauce. And have peanut butter cookies for dessert. A perfectly peanuty day! :D

Global Belly Laugh Day: Have a great big belly laugh at 1:24 pm local time. Yep, celebrating this day is as simple as that!

National Compliment Day: This one’s also pretty simple to celebrate: Give out compliments all day! Of course, make sure you mean it. Find things you truly like about people you know or people you meet. It could be about them personally or it could be something they’ve done or are wearing, for example. Then tell them about it.

January 25:

National Irish Coffee Day: Supercharge your day with a warm, bracing cup of Irish coffee.

Fun At Work Day: We hope you have fun at work more than once per year. But if not at least try to make it happen for this day! And if you do, lucky you. And bosses, let your employees enjoy the day … maybe even have an official event.

National Big Wig Day: This day is for being a bigwig in a big wig and raising funds for charity. So have a party at home or at work (wigs optional but highly suggested!), collect donations & send the money to charity. The Big Wig site lists charities it partners with for the day.

January 26:

National Seed Swap Day: Gardeners know how fun it is to try growing new things. And when you swap seeds with fellow gardening lovers you all get to try new plants … and advice too! So find a seed swap near you & get swapping.

National Peanut Brittle Day: A sweet day indeed. Enjoy this crunchy, nutty, salty & sweet treat to celebrate this day. Buy some or, if you’re feeling ambitious, try this recipe. It includes lots of tips to help ensure a good, crisp brittle. There’s even a video!

National Green Juice Day: Offset the sugary not-so-good-for-you-ness of peanut brittle (but not terrible for you … after all peanuts are good!) with some healthy green juice. Evolution Fresh started this day in 2016 to encourage you to keep up with your healthy eating resolutions (the company found more than 50% of you have given up on your resolutions by the 3rd week in January!).

January 27:

Chocolate Cake Day: Enjoy a slice (or 2!) of rich, chocolaty scrumptiousness for this day. There’s really no other way to celebrate. Buy it if you must, but homemade is truly divine.

National Geographic Day: This day celebrates the founding of the National Geographic Society on Jan. 27, 1888. Its National Geographic Magazine offers a unique and beautiful perspective on the world around us. Celebrate by checking out the current issue you’ve been neglecting or by finding an old issue to discover (check out local thrift stores). Or grab your camera and try to see the world as the society and the magazine’s photographers do.

Thomas Crapper Day: On this day we celebrate the anniversary of the death of the man who claimed to have invented the flush toilet. He didn’t, but he was a plumber who did market & popularize them. And his company had such a large market in indoor plumbing that his name became slang for the device (it probably didn’t hurt that his name was so similar to the already-in-use “crap” as slang for poop).
