What to Celebrate July 9 thru 15 2018
The independence day celebrations are done (of course, if your neighbors are like ours there’s at least one person still using up a big supply of fireworks). But that doesn’t mean your celebrations have to end.
Not at all!
There’s plenty of fun still to be had.
The 2nd week in July offers lots of food celebrations, along with plenty of encouragement to get outside and enjoy the month. Also some serious offerings and a couple of silly ones.
Whatever your preference, you’re sure to find something to celebrate.
So as usual, take a peek at the upcoming week, and make a plan to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate All During July
July is all about outdoor fun, and staying safe out there. Also getting artistic, which you can also do outdoors if the mood strikes you!
Park and Recreation Month: Check out your local parks & rec centers. Discover new ones. And discover all the “unusual” things your local parks may offer beyond the standard playgrounds & ball fields.
World Watercolor Month: Are you artistic? Then post watercolor artwork on social media during July to help raise awareness for art education. Don’t worry about how “good” you are. You can participate even if it’s your first time trying watercolors.
National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month: Promoting roadside safety, because walking along a roadside can be dangerous. Especially at night. And this situation is more common in summer, when you’re taking more road trips and driving to vacation destinations.
Weekly Celebrations for July 9 – 15
For July’s 2nd full week we celebrate enjoying nature au naturel. Also being “creatively maladjusted” (what the heck is that!?). And, as horse lovers know, farriers have one of the most important horsey jobs around.
Nude Recreation Week (July 9 – 15): This one seems self-explanatory. Enjoy some recreational activities in the nude … think nude beaches and skinny dipping. This celebration started as a weekend in the 1970s & expanded to a week by the 90s. The Naturist Society organizes and promotes the week.
National Farriers Week (July 8 – 14): Thank your favorite farrier this week. If you’re not a horse person, a farrier is a person who puts shoes on horses and keeps their hooves trimmed & clean. The American Farriers Journal promotes the week.
Creative Maladjustment Week (July 7 – 14): Creatively maladjusted people are the critical thinkers and believers in humanity who focus on and look for solutions to societal problems. They actively promote things like corruption-free government, individual liberty, religious tolerance, and more. Are you creatively maladjusted?
Celebration Days coming up for July 9 thru July 15
This week is chock full of food fun, along with some silly days and some serious ones.
From picnics with teddy bears to sharks and bees. Also sugar cookies, piña coladas, mac & cheese, and Slurpees … all of which sounds like great things to pack for that teddy bear picnic!
We also celebrate questionable editing, simplicity, collector cars, and much more … Although collecting cars (or collecting anything, really) rarely (never) leads to simplicity!
So before you head off to enjoy your weekend, take a moment to plan for a fun-tastic next week!
July 9:
Sugar Cookie Day: Indulge in a sweet treat to celebrate. But not any sweet treat … it must be your favorite sugar cookies! Homemade or store-bought is up to you, but the type of cookie is not! Only sugar cookies allowed for this day.
International Town Criers Day: On the 2nd Monday in July we celebrate the “town criers.” These were the people who kept the people informed of important news & events. They’d get attention with a call, bell, or other noise & then announce things like local ordinances, the opening of fishing season, or other items of interest. You could call them an early version of social media.
July 10:
Don’t Step on a Bee Day: Avoid stepping on bees today. They don’t like it & will probably sting you if you’re barefoot. Then they’ll die. And that’s just bad karma.
Piña Colada Day: If you love this sweet blend of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and rum, then you must celebrate this day! Sip a piña colada to wind down after a long day at work. Or if you have the day off, enjoy one on the beach, on your deck, or wherever the mood strikes you. Get the recipe here.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day: This is the day to have a picnic with your teddy bears. Kids not required (although if you have ‘em, bring ‘em, no matter their ages.). The Teddy Bears’ Picnic is actually a song written by John W. Bratton, with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy. But you don’t have to sing the song to enjoy a teddy bear picnic!
July 11:
Bowdler’s Day: On this day we commemorate the birth of the man whose “editing” adventures gave us the word bowdlerize (modify or remove offensive or vulgar parts of a written work).
Slurpee Day: Get free Slurpees! Well, 1 free small Slurpee per person. But still, it seems like the perfect excuse to take a mid-day break & head to 7-11. Enjoy.
Cow Appreciation Day: Need something to eat with your free Slurpee? How about some free Chick-fil-A? Just dress like a cow & the restaurant will give you a free entree. Kids get a free Kid’s Meal (yes, wearing something cow-like also required).
July 12:
Different Colored Eyes Day: If you or someone you know has different colored eyes, this day’s for you! (Did you know you had your very own day?). Less than 1% of people have this; you’re special!
National Simplicity Day: Celebrate living simply in honor of Henry David Thoreau on his birthdate. In his book Walden, the author and naturalist advocated simple living in natural surroundings. Can you follow his example and find ways to simplify your life on this day?
July 13:
National French Fries Day: Celebrate the crispy, salty, potatoey delight we call the french fry. And others call chips, pommes frites, and other names. Whatever you call ‘em, eat ‘em on July 13!
Collector Car Appreciation Day: This annual event is in its 9th year and aims to “raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.” Go to an event near you or host your own!
Gruntled Workers Day: Sooo … if you’re not a disgruntled worker, then this day is apparently for you. It’s another fun day from Tom & Ruth Roy of Wellcat.com.
July 14:
Pandemonium Day: It’s a day for total chaos and uproar! Will you embrace it or try to tame it? Or maybe you’ll be the one creating it?!
National Macaroni and Cheese Day: After surviving all that pandemonium, you’ll need some comfort food. Lucky for you, it’s also Mac & Cheese Day! So whip up your favorite recipe (boxed or made from scratch, it doesn’t matter), and relax. Ahhh … doesn’t that feel (and taste!) good?
Shark Awareness Day: No, this isn’t a way to create more chaos for Pandemonium Day. Instead it’s a day to learn more about sharks. And understand that we humans are a bigger threat to the sharks than they are to us.
July 15:
National Pet Fire Safety Day: Take some time today to think about how you’d protect your pet in case of a fire. If your pets are not already part of your family’s emergency plan, add them. If they are, review the plan to make sure it still makes sense.
National Ice Cream Day: On the 3rd Sunday in July we celebrate this cool, creamy treat. And it’s an actual National day! In 1984 a resolution to make it so (along with making July National Ice Cream Month) passed Congress and President Ronald Reagan issued the proclamation. Well, sort of. The resolution & proclamation were specific to 1984. But we’ve been celebrating every year since. This year it falls on the same day as Gummi Worm Day, so we recommend combining the celebrations …
National Gummi Worm Day: Trolli expanded its gummi candy offerings on July 15, 1981 with the introduction of the gummi worm. And this worm has become so beloved it has its own day. How to celebrate? We’re pretty sure you can figure this one out …
