Celebration Ideas for June 1 – 7, 2020

June is just a couple of days away! Or already here, depending on when you’re reading this. 😊

Let’s hope the month brings more good news than the last few have. But no matter what the news brings, we continue to bring you reasons to enjoy and/or find purpose in each & every day.

From pets & bears to bubbly & gingerbread, you’re sure to find something to pique your interest.

So it’s that time again. Time to take a peek and plan your week. And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All June Long

June is all about animals! Pets, pollinators, and all the wildlife at zoos & aquariums. Take the time to love them & learn about them & protect them. A lovely month indeed!

Adopt a Cat Month: A lot of people adopted new pets during these past stay-at-home months. If you’ve been thinking about it but haven’t done so yet, June is the month for it! Kitten season is in full swing, so you’ll have lots to choose from. But only adopt if you’re sure you’ll have time for your new furry family member, of course. Because despite their reputation for being aloof, cats do still need lots of love & attention to live their best lives.

Foster a Pet Month: Can’t adopt? Foster! The PetCo Foundation & Sketchers created this month to inspire pet lovers to help even more pets in need. And what many shelter pets need is a home in which to heal and become the loving, adoptable animals they were meant to be.

National Pet Preparedness Month: June is the month to make sure your disaster preparedness plan includes your pets! That includes not only knowing how you’ll get your pets out of the house and where you’ll take them (emergency shelters & some hotels may not allow them), but also having a disaster kit ready with things like food & medications.

National Pollinator Month: This month we celebrate those helpful critters that keep your flowers blooming. And food crops, too! But not just the bees. Butterflies, moths, bats, flies, and many others you may not realize are also pollinators. And what’s the best way to celebrate them? Plant a pollinator-friendly garden full of all their favorites, along with other resources they need!

National Zoo and Aquarium Month: Zoos & aquariums are starting to reopen! So plan to visit during this month. And maybe see if your zoo or aquarium has a conservation program you can learn about & help support. Some even let you “adopt” an animal (virtually, of course)! Not sure where there’s a zoo near you? Find an Association of Zoos & Aquariums accredited facility here.

Weekly Celebrations for June’s 1st Week

Once again the week-long celebrations list is sparse. But the one we found is important! Life-saving, even. So it deserves the spotlight all by itself.

National CPR and AED Awareness Week (June 1 – 7, 2020): When someone goes into cardiac arrest, every second counts. Do you know what to do? Use this week to learn! Or at least sign up for an upcoming class.

And National Garden Week begins on the 7th! Start planning how you’ll celebrate it. Because all gardening activities need planning!

Celebration Days coming up for June 1 thru June 7

Get ready to be nice (except when yelling at cobras!), hug your cat, and use a VCR (you do know what that is?). You might also like to snack on some chocolate macaroons or indulge in some Rocky Road. And maybe sip some cognac or have a shot of moonshine.

Of course there are plenty more options to help you have another fun-tastic week. Let’s do this!

June 1:

National Heimlich Maneuver Day: Do you know how to do the Heimlich? If not, this is the day to learn. Did you know you can do it on pets, too? If you have pets, learn how to do it on them too.

World Reef Day: This new day (started in 2019) asks us to learn about and help protect the delicate ecosystems of the world’s coral reefs. The health of the reefs affects us all, even if we don’t live near one. So let’s all take simple steps to ensure they survive, like using reef-safe sunscreens and using fewer single-use plastics (or none at all!). And of course, help spread the word.

National Go Barefoot Day: Kick off those shoes and go barefoot for the day! As much as possible anyway. We’re pretty sure most stores & workplaces still frown on not wearing shoes. While you’re barefoot, think about the people who have no choice but to go barefoot, and consider donating a pair of new or gently used shoes to Soles4Souls, the creator of the day. Because “turning shoes and clothing into opportunity” is the real point of the day.

National Say Something Nice Day: On this day we stop and think before we speak. And as much as possible only speak if we’re ready to say something nice. Or at least deliver not-so-nice news in a nice way. Because “being real” or “saying it like it is” should never be an excuse to be rude or cruel.

National Nail Polish Day: Has your favorite nail salon finally opened? What better day to head back in than Nail Polish Day? And if you can’t get an appointment, there’s nothing stopping you from doing your own nails in your favorite color.

National Hazelnut Cake Day: Go a little bit nutty with a slice of hazelnut cake to celebrate the beginning of June (and in some places a further loosening of stay-at-home restrictions!). As usual, we suggest you make your hazelnut cake if you can.

June 2:

Yell “Fudge” at the Cobras in North America Day: Keep those cobras out of North America! Do your part by yelling “fudge” out your front door at noon. Yes, your neighbors will think you’ve lost it. But who cares? And anyway, most of us have lost it after 2 months of isolation.

Leave the Office Early Day: If you’ve only just returned to the office, this might not be the year to celebrate this day. But if you’ve been working throughout the pandemic, this might be a good day to give yourself a break & cut out a bit early.

National Bubba Day: Do you know a Bubba? We usually use the term to refer to a brother or someone we love like a brother. (Although some uses are less kind). This day is for celebrating all the Bubbas we love. So buy them dinner or a drink if you can. At least give them a call to let them know how much they mean to you.

National Rocky Road Day: Enjoy the sweet treat of chocolate, nuts, & marshmallow known as Rocky Road. If it’s hot, you’ll probably want the ice cream version. But this flavor combination makes delightful candy bars & cakes, too! Here’s a recipe for Rocky Road bars you might enjoy.

National Rotisserie Chicken Day: Make dinner simple with a rotisserie chicken. Maybe from Boston Market, the creator of the day. And as a bonus, any leftover chicken can make another simple dinner later in the week. Check out these ideas for rotisserie chicken meals.

June 3:

Chimborazo Day: Raise a toast to the inactive volcano whose peak is closer to the moon than any other spot on earth.

Global Running Day: On this day we run. Run alone or with a team. Run a 1/2 mile or 5 miles (or more!). It doesn’t matter, just get moving. Because it’s good for you. You can even join the virtual race if you need more motivation (the race is virtual, but you still need to actually run in real life. 😉)

National Stuffed Shrimp Scholars Day: Eat stuffed shrimp. That is all.

National Egg Day: Find ways to incorporate eggs into each meal for this day. Despite their sometimes bad health reputation, eggs pack a lot of nutrition into one little package. So go ahead & enjoy an egg-filled day. Yes, eggs in a cake count … but that does reduce their healthfulness!

National Chocolate Macaroon Day: Yes, we did just celebrate macaroons. And you may even have celebrated with chocolate macaroons! But that day was about any macaroons. This day is about chocolate ones only. So no matter how you celebrated on May 31, for this day you’ll want to enjoy chocolate macaroons. Buy them if you must, make them if you can.

June 4:

Old Maid’s Day: If you’re a woman who’s over 25 and unmarried, celebrate this politically incorrect day! If you’re not an “old maid” yourself, celebrate any of your friends who are. Because there’s not a darn thing wrong with being either married or unmarried at any age.

International Hug Your Cat Day: Every opportunity you get, give your cat a big ol’ hug! This will be easier if your cat happens to like hugs. 😻

National SAFE Day: This day is about ensuring responsible gun ownership and protecting children from senseless & avoidable accidents. Because no child’s life should ever end because someone left a gun unsecured.

National Cognac Day: For this day we sip the variety of brandy known as Cognac.

National Cheese Day: Get creative with cheeses all day! And do try at least one new cheese. There’s a whole world of cheeses out there, and your new favorite is just waiting for you to discover it. So, what cheeses do you think will go best with that Cognac?

June 5:

National Moonshine Day: Celebrate with a shot of your favorite moonshine. Or try a few different ones to discover a new favorite. But not too many! The stuff’s still pretty potent. Or try it in a cocktail. 😎 🥃

Festival of Popular Delusions Day: So, what are we deluded about these days? Oh, so many things! This is the day for a reality check.

National Donut Day: Commemorate the “Donut Lassies” who served donut treats to American soldiers in WWI, and help the Salvation Army raise funds to continue its good work. And, of course, enjoy your favorite donut!

National Gingerbread Day: Can we make gingerbread donuts? We see no reason why not, since we can make cakes & cookies! But if you’d rather have two sweet treats for this day, indulge in whatever gingerbread goodies you love best.

National Veggie Burger Day: To balance out your sweet treats, have a nutritious veggie burger for lunch or dinner. Or both! Because there are so many different varieties of veggie burger, it’s nearly impossible to get bored with them.

June 6:

Yo-Yo Day: Practice those yo-yo tricks! You’re gonna want to pull out all the stops for this day.

National Gardening Exercise Day: Gardening is pretty good exercise all on its own! But if you’d like to add in some lunges or squats between your weed pullings or your plantings, go for it! But at least get out in the garden and get some gardening done.

National Black Bear Day: Celebrate the most common of the North American bears. Which, by the way, isn’t always black! North Carolina’s virtual Black Bear Fest is the place to be for this day.

National Prairie Day: Celebrate what’s left of America’s prairies. Learn more about their importance to the ecosystem & help to preserve them.

National Bubbly Day: Pop the cork on a bottle of sparkling wine and toast to summer. Or whatever else you may have to celebrate.

National Applesauce Cake Day: If you don’t have anything else to toast to, applesauce cake is worth a toast! It’s moist & sweet & spiced just right. Of course, if you make an applesauce cake yourself, you can toast to yourself for making such a delightful dessert!

June 7:

National VCR Day: Do you still have a VCR? And tapes to go in it? Pull ’em out & watch something! And remember with amazement a time when watching a movie or TV show at your convenience was a radical idea.

National Animal Rights Day: Animals have the right to live free from abuse by humans. If you agree, join the movement to create a kinder world for all the earth’s creatures. And help spread the word.

National Cancer Survivors Day: This is a day for anyone touched by cancer. Those who have beaten it. Those newly diagnosed. All those who love them. The medical teams treating them. Everyone. So celebrate the advances in diagnosis & treatment, and the very real possibilities for a long, rewarding life after a cancer diagnosis while also recognizing the challenges of surviving cancer.

National Boone Day: Celebrate the day Daniel Boone began exploring the great state of Kentucky back in 1769.

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day: What a glorious way to end the week. With chocolate ice cream! Eat a dish plain or add your favorite toppings (chocolate syrup on chocolate ice cream, anyone?). Or have it in a cone, or with a piece of cake. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination! Delicious.
