Celebrate All During June

June celebrates some delicious foods all month long. This week we highlight 4 we’re definitely celebrating.

Georgia Blueberry Month: Georgia is one of the top 5 blueberry-producing states in the US. So a few years ago the governor proclaimed June as Georgia Blueberry Month. So this month, try to eat only blueberries from Georgia! The Georgia Blueberry Commission offers a few recipe ideas here. (Note that this month is different from National Blueberry Month in July … when you can eat blueberries from anywhere!).

California Avocado Month: Another delightful food we can’t get enough of . And they’re more than just a guacamole base. They make amazing additions to lots of meals! Find recipe ideas, freezing tips, ripening tips, and more on the California Avocado Commission’s blog.

Country Cooking Month: “Country cooking” means different things to different people. And that’s just fine! Whatever it means to you, celebrate it. Dig out mom’s or grandma’s recipes. Cook or bake completely from scratch. Try your hand at canning/preserving. There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate this month.

Dairy Month: This month has been going strong since 1939! Don’t like milk? Choose other dairy products, like cheese & yogurt, which also provide the calcium, potassium, and vitamin D your body needs. Lactose intolerant? You may still be able to enjoy certain dairy products, like lactose-free or reduced lactose milk, yogurt with live, active cultures, and others.

Weekly Celebrations for June 11 – 17

This week’s celebrations are patriotic, healthy, and sticky. Sounds like fun! Pick your favorite(s) or celebrate ‘em all.

National Flag Week (June 10 – 16): Fly the flag all week, not just on Flag Day (6/14).

Men’s Health Week (June 11 – 17): The week before Father’s Day we encourage men & boys to take care of their health. Remind them to get regular checkups and treat diseases & injuries early. The week is part of Men’s Health Month in June.

Duck Tape Festival (June 14 – 16): Yes, there’s really a festival devoted to to the Duck Tape brand of duct tape. And this is its 15 year! If you’re near Avon, Ohio (or feel like a road trip) check it out.

Celebration Days coming up for June 11 thru June 17

Sunday, June 17 is of course Father’s Day. And we hope you’ll be celebrating with your own father and/or children. But until then there’s plenty of other days to celebrate.

Lots of food & drink days to start. Good-for-you foods like veggies. Sweet treats like cake & cookies. And top it all off with a bourbon!

On a more serious note we celebrate the flag, raise awareness of brain injuries, and remember the pets we’ve loved & lost.

Plus much more of course.

So take a moment to plan for a fun-tastic week. And have a beautiful weekend too.

June 11:

Corn on the Cob Day: It’s a bit early for the best of the sweet corn, but who cares. We’ve waited all winter! So grab yourself some cobs (from the farmer’s market if you can!) & grill, roast or even microwave ‘em. Then eat ‘em plain or butter ‘em up. Just enjoy!

German Chocolate Cake Day: What a fantastically delicious day! After enjoying corn on the cob with our meals, we can have German chocolate cake for dessert. Mmmmm … Did you know? The “German” in the name does not refer to the country. It was this cake’s creator’s last name!

June 12:

World Pet Memorial Day: Remember the pets you’ve loved. Maybe even make a donation to a local shelter in their memory.

Loving Day: This day celebrate the 1967 Supreme Court ruling that made interracial marriage legal across the US. It was already legal in all but 16 states, but the ruling struck down any anti-miscegenation laws still on the books. And it covered all races, not just black & white.

National Peanut Butter Cookie Day: Enjoy peanut butter cookies today. If you have time, consider making them yourself. Make the classic cookies, or try one of the recipes here (Peanut Butter Blossom cookies or Peanut Butter ‘N Jelly Bars).

June 13:

International Albinism Awareness Day: This day aims to help people understand albinism. And most importantly get rid of myths surrounding this condition. Some of these myths can actually put people with albinism in physical danger.

National Random Acts of Light Day: Started just last year, this day brings awareness to the leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Random Acts of Lights Campaign. This program brings a bit of light to blood cancer patients all year long.

Brain Injury Awareness Day: This is an event in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario to bring patients, family, and professionals together to learn about brain injuries. It is in its 10th year. Even if you’re not attending the event or directly touched by brain injury, consider learning a little bit about it on this day.

June 14:

Pause for the Pledge Day: This companion celebration to Flag Day asks us to face the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance at 7 pm Eastern. That’s it!

International Bath Day: Taking a bath is a great way to relax & have some “me time”. Which makes baths a great thing to celebrate. But that’s not actually the reason for this day. International Bath Day celebrates the date on which the mathematician Archimedes realized that you can measure an object’s volume by submerging it in water. Why does that make this Bath Day? Because he was taking a bath when the discovery hit!

National Bourbon Day: Wind down your day of celebration, or toast your own bath-inspired discovery, with a glass of America’s own whiskey. Did you know only whiskey made in the US can be called bourbon? Do you know the other rules for making it?

June 15:

Nature Photography Day: Get out & take pictures of nature! If you get any shots you really like, consider entering them in the North American Nature Photography Association’s contest. It runs from June 8 through June 15.

Global Wind Day: On this day we discover the power of the wind and the potential it holds to improve our environment and economy.

National Flip Flop Day: Wear flip flops into any Tropical Smoothie Cafe location & get a free smoothie. There’s locations across the US, so hopefully there’s one near you!

June 16:

National Fudge Day: Mmmmm … indulge in a piece or two (or more?) of your favorite fudge.

World Juggling Day: Get out and juggle to celebrate this day. Or if you’re not that coordinated, find someplace to watch in awe as others juggle.

Bloomsday: This day celebrates the author James Joyce. Why? Because it’s the day on which his novel Ulysses takes place.

June 17:

Eat Your Vegetables Day: Plan a veggie-filled day! Try a new vegetable or two, even. It’s the perfect day for it.

Stewart’s Root Beer Day: Enjoy some Stewart’s root beer to celebrate the day. No other root beer will do.

National Turkey Lovers’ Day: Father’s Day now doubles as Turkey Lovers’ Day! So if you’re grilling for Father’s Day, throw some turkey on the grill too. June is also Turkey Lovers’ Month, and this day was added in 2016.
