What to Celebrate June 14 thru 20, 2021
In just another week astronomical summer will be here! Which means it’ll be summer no matter how you look at it (Meteorological summer started June 1). And that’s reason enough to celebrate.
But of course there’s much, much more to celebrate on these hot days. Like strawberry shortcake and milkshakes. And surfing. Along with surf music!
Don’t forget fishing. And camping. As long as you’re out in nature, bring a camera so you can take some pictures of it. Especially on the 15th!
So don’t delay! Take a peek and plan your week. And as always remember to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate All June Long
Dementia is nothing to celebrate. But making sure people facing it—in themselves or a loved one—know they aren’t alone is. So we raise awareness and honor the carers.
We also leave room for fun in the form of the upbeat tunes known as surf music. And camping!
Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month: Millions of people have some form of dementia. Possibly even someone you love. Learn more about Alzheimer’s & dementia for this month. And show your support by wearing purple.
Dementia Care Professionals Month: We also celebrate & honor those people who choose to care for people with dementia. It’s a job that can be stressful, especially as dementia worsens. But those in the profession also talk of the rewards of the job. They are true angels with hearts of gold. Thank any you know.
International Surf Music Month: Celebrate surf music! What the heck is that? It’s the unique sound that came out of California in the early 1960s. While the Beach Boys might be most recognizable to many, it began with Dick Dale and the DelTones (Let’s Go Trippin’). You might also recognize the Surfaris’ Wipe Out. Or Jan and Dean’s Surf City. So play your favorite surf music for the month.
National Camping Month: Are there any rules against playing surf music while you’re camping? We think not! So if you prefer the woods to the water, head out to pitch a tent & enjoy all nature has to offer. Surf music optional. But encouraged!
Weekly Celebrations for June 14 to 20
This week brings us a mixed bag of celebrations. From bringing kindness & courtesy into all our interactions to getting away from it all. And hauling it all away. Along with a reminder of the importance of regular healthcare.
National Hermit Week (June 13 – 20, 2021): If all this “getting back to normal” stuff has been leaving you feeling exhausted & in need of some alone-time, this could be the perfect week for you. Skip all the other celebrations (or celebrate only a select few) & find yourself a quiet place to recharge.
National Waste & Recycling Workers Week (June 13 – 19, 2021): All during the week containing June 17 (Garbage Man Day) we celebrate those people with the thankless job of dealing with our garbage. So if you’re at home when they come to collect yours, why not offer a heartfelt “Thank you!”? Maybe even a bottle of water or a little treat?
Men’s Health Week (June 14 – 20, 2021): Make sure the men & boys in your life get their routine checkups. And medical care for injuries, too.
National Etiquette Week (June 14 – 20, 2021): For this week we make a point of being courteous and kind. Because while the details of etiquette may change (are we really appalled any more if someone puts the knife on the wrong side of the plate?) basic good manners never go out of style. So say “please” and “thank you”. Hold that door open. Let the person buying 2 items go ahead of you & your full cart. Just be kind.
Celebration Days coming up for June 14 thru June 20
Sunday is of course Father’s Day, so if you can, make plans to spend it with your father. Until then we have the flag to honor and nature to photograph.
We also splurge, go fishing, and juggle (actual objects, not our various responsibilities!). Through it all we sip bourbon & root beer, enjoy sushi & lobster, and marvel at the ginormous shark called Megalodon.
That’s definitely a good start on a fun-tastic week!
June 14:
Pause for the Pledge Day: At 7pm Eastern we set aside our differences and unite as one nation to stop what we’re doing, face the flag, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Army Birthday: Celebrate the birth of the US Army, June 14, 1775. At the time it was called the Continental Army. And Congress formed it to fight for our independence from Britain.
International Bath Day: On June 14 we take a bath. And maybe, just maybe, we will have an epiphany as earth-shattering as the one Archimedes had in his bath on this date more than 2100 years ago. But even if you don’t discover something as amazing as measuring an object’s volume by submerging it in water, you may rediscover how soothing a soak in the tub can be. And that seems like a pretty valuable discovery too.
World Blood Donor Day: This day reminds us that the world needs a safe, reliable blood supply. And blood donors are the only way to get that! It also raises awareness of the need to ensure all communities have health systems that can handle not only getting the blood from donors but storing it and getting it to the patients who need it.
National Pop Goes the Weasel Day: Did you sing the Pop Goes the Weasel nursery rhyme as a child? It has existed for a few hundred years, although its true origin isn’t clear. And the lyrics have changed, too. In fact, there are quite a few different versions. Which one did you sing?
National Bourbon Day: For this day we drink bourbon! Which is apparently the official spirit of America. In fact, this type of whiskey can only be called Bourbon if it is distilled in the United States. It must also meet other standards. So pour yourself a bourbon, neat or on the rocks, & sip to your heart’s content. Or make a bourbon cocktail.
National Strawberry Shortcake Day: What should you do during peak strawberry season? Eat strawberries of course! And the next best thing to just eating a pile of them with your fingers is making strawberry shortcake. Which is what you must do for this day. But as simple as it is, you may still want to make it before you settle in with that bourbon …
June 15:
Nature Photography Day: We hope you’re getting out to enjoy nature as much as possible for the summer. But if you need a reason to do so, here’s one. Grab a camera (of course your phone will do!) and take pictures of nature. It doesn’t matter where. Photograph flowers & animals in your own yard. Or a nearby park. Even better, head out to a nature preserve to see what you can see! Don’t forget to share them!
Global Wind Day: For this day we learn about wind energy! Because it’s only when we understand how turbines work and see the success stories that we can truly understand what wind can do.
National Smile Power Day: Smile! When you do you’ll unlock the awesome power of this cheerful facial expression. Just a simple smile can make everyone around you feel better. And then they’ll smile too! Then the contagion will spread like wildfire. And this is one thing we want to spread as far as possible!
Worldwide Day of Giving: For this day we all give just a little bit. Either money or time. Give $10 to a stranger you come across during the day or to a charity of your choice. Or volunteer your time for the day or a few hours. It couldn’t be simpler!
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Learn about and help raise awareness of elder abuse and how to identify & prevent it. Because everyone deserves to live free from abuse & neglect.
National Megalodon Day: For the first time ever we celebrate the massive shark known as Megalodon. It’s been extinct for at least 2.5 million years, but for about 20 million years it dominated the oceans. Learn more about this fearsome behemoth for the day. If you’re near a fossil museum (like the day’s founder, the Aurora Fossil Museum in North Carolina) head in to see what you can see.
National Lobster Day: Eat lobster! Head out to your favorite seafood restaurant or make it at home. Don’t care for eating lobster? Head out to a nearby aquarium and spend some time watching live lobsters. Learn about lobsters, too. Did you know there are at least 80 different species of lobster?
June 16:
National Fudge Day: Eat fudge. Need we say more?
Bloomsday: Fans of James Joyce’s Ulysses reenact as much of Leopold Bloom’s day in Dublin as possible. Of course, fans not in Dublin must get more creative. Perhaps a reading of Ulysses. Or a Guinness or two.
Ladies’ Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the very first Ladies’ Day promotion in baseball. The owner of the New York Gothams (today the Giants) wanted more fans (and thus more money, of course!). So he created Ladies’ Day, inviting women to attend the June 16, 1883 game for free. And attend they did! Soon ball parks across the country were promoting Ladies’ Days, and the days remained popular for some 100 years.
June 17:
Eat Your Vegetables Day: Take Mom’s advice and eat your vegetables. And if it’s not already a daily thing, consider making this the first day of a new, healthy habit.
National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day: Celebrate the people who help the elderly and others who may not be able to care for themselves live with dignity. CNAs may work in long-term care facilities or hospitals, or they may help people remain in their own homes as long as possible.
Dump the Pump Day: For this day we use public transportation instead of our own vehicles. Who knows, you might find you like it! And then you can pump gas less often … or dump the pump more often, depending on how you want to think about it!
National Stewart’s Root Beer Day: For this day we drink Stewart’s Root Beer! No other root beer allowed. Although making a root beer float with your Stewart’s Root Beer is absolutely allowed!
World Tapas Day: Grab family & friends, then head out to enjoy an evening of tapas and togetherness.
National Cherry Tart Day: Make a cherry tart to enjoy as dessert after your tapas dinner.
National Apple Strudel Day: Or if you’d prefer, make apple strudel for dessert. Although if your tapas companions will be sharing your dessert we’d recommend offering both cherry tart and apple strudel!
June 18:
International Sushi Day: Enjoy your favorite sushi to celebrate this scrumptious day. Head out to your favorite restaurant or order in. And if you can make it yourself, do that! Or maybe try to learn to make it yourself. It’s not like it has to be perfect! Just delicious.
National Splurge Day: For this day we splurge and treat ourselves to something we’ve been wanting. It could be a thing or an experience, but it should be something fun … a want, not a need. And it doesn’t have to be big or expensive. It could be something as simple as taking some extra time for yourself in the morning … maybe sitting in your favorite coffee shop enjoying your favorite latte. The one you rarely buy because it’s too expensive or has too many calories. Or splurge on a really good bottle of wine to go with dinner. Or, if you can afford it, splurge on that vacation you’ve been putting off for years. How you splurge is all up to you.
National Wanna Get Away Day: This one could go well with Splurge Day if it’s travel you want to splurge on! Southwest Airlines wants to celebrate its 50th anniversary with giveaways! And they’ve already started. Each day through June 18 you have chances to win Rapid Rewards points, with gift cards and companion passes added on the 18th! Enter here.
National Go Fishing Day: On this Friday you must play hooky and go fishing! Go alone if you prefer, or grab a fishing buddy or two. Then go enjoy your day.
June 19:
Garfield the Cat Day: Celebrate everybody’s favorite orange cat. Maybe by eating some of his favorite foods. Or watching a Garfield movie. And give your own cat an extra treat in honor of Garfield.
FreeBSD Day: Celebrate the open-source operating system that many of us use (at least part of) almost every day without even realizing it. FreeBSD was developed in 1993 at Berkley. Because it’s open-source developers can modify it to suit their needs. And many have done just that!
International Surfing Day: Surf’s up! At least we hope it will be on June 19, since that’ll make celebrating this day a whole lot easier. But even if you can’t go surfing (or just plain can’t surf!), you can still celebrate. Because there’s a 2nd part to the day: raising awareness of our oceans’ health. Anyone can learn about keeping the oceans healthy and help others learn too.
National Watch Day: Do you wear a watch? A lot of people don’t anymore. They use their phones to know the time. But a watch is more than a way to tell time; it’s a fashion statement. And of course, the Apple watch and similar smart watches have made watches more popular again, even if they’re not quite your grandfather’s watch! So if you have a watch, wear it. And if there’s a special occasion coming up, consider giving a watch as a gift.
Polar Bear Swim: A Polar Bear Swim in mid June? Why? Where?! Well, Nome, Alaska! Because it’s still icy there. So taking a dip in the Bering Sea is, shall we say, chilly. If you’re interested in a trip to Nome, this might be the perfect time to go.
World Juggling Day: For this day the whole world juggles! Join an official event or juggle on your own. Don’t know how? It’s the perfect day to learn.
June 20:
World Productivity Day: Whatever productivity looks like to you, do that for this day.
National Hike with a Geek Day: Grab your geekiest friends and persuade them to leave the electronics & other geeky passions behind in favor of a hike in the great outdoors. For some this may be an easier sell than others. So enlist the nature-loving (or at least nature-liking/neutral) geeks in your life to help persuade the nature-disliking ones. And accept that some just may not be persuaded. Have fun with the others!
National Seashell Day: Head to the beach to look for seashells! Before or after your hike with your geek friends. Or—even though a stroll on the beach doesn’t really qualify as a hike—the search for seashells could be your hike!
American Eagle Day: Depending on where you hike with your geek, maybe you’ll see an American eagle (bald eagle)! And whether or not you see one, celebrate the anniversary of the day in 1782 when the bald eagle was chosen as our national symbol. And perhaps help clean up our environment … which could also count as your hike! As long as you have a geek with you, of course.
National Ice Cream Soda Day: After your hike, seashell searching, American eagle celebrating, and just general productivity you deserve a treat. Make it your favorite flavor of ice cream soda!
National Vanilla Milkshake Day: You might prefer your treat to be a vanilla milkshake. And that’s ok! But if you celebrated all those other special days, you deserve to have both an ice cream soda and a vanilla milkshake if you’d like.
Turkey Lovers’ Day: In between all your productive activities & treats you’ll need to make time for meals. Choose turkey for your protein all day. It’s lean & delicious & comes in all your favorite forms, from ground & tenderloin to sausage & bacon. Yum!
