How’s June been treating you?

Hopefully you’re enjoying it. But if you need more ideas on how to enjoy it, we bring you another week’s worth of fun, silly, delicious, and yes also some serious day, week, & monthly celebrations.

So brush your teeth, eat your veggies (and fruits too), and be productive. Fuel your productivity with apple strudel & sushi. Stay hydrated with root beer & martinis (ok, those are probably not the best options for staying hydrated, but you can still celebrate them).

All those celebrations & more are waiting for you to make them your own. So what are you waiting for?

Take a peek and plan your week. And get ready to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of June

June is all about health & safety! Healthy eyes through vision research. Healthy mouth through good oral hygiene. And healthy body full of fresh fruits & veggies. And during it all, stay safe!

Vision Research Month: Is your vision worth protecting? The people who study eyes and how they work think so. And they keep working to learn more and develop better & better ways to protect your eyes from problems. And treat problems when they do come up. Why not spend some time this month learning a little of what researchers have discovered over the years about eye anatomy, eye health, and eye diseases.

Oral Health Month: Your mouth is also worth protecting! Make sure you’re doing all you can to keep your teeth and gums healthy this month … and keep up the good work all year, of course.

National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month: Farmers markets are in full swing, and they’re the perfect place to find lots of yummy fresh fruits and vegetables! So hit up those markets & snack on/cook/grill/steam/roast all your fresh finds! As a bonus, nutritious fruits & veggies are good for your eyes & mouth too! (Yes, fruit sugars can be hard on your teeth, but if you’re practicing good oral hygiene you’ll be rinsing & brushing those sugars away). They’re good for the rest of your body, too. So you have no excuse to avoid celebrating this month.

National Safety Month: Do you practice safety at home, work, and everywhere? Most of us probably do … or think we do. But there are also probably things we can improve. And even things we never think about but should! Spend some time this month learning how to recognize hazards & avoid injury.

Weekly Celebrations for June’s 3rd Week

This week we treat animals right and enjoy some craft spirits while admiring bartenders’ creativity.

National Pollinator Week (June 17 – 23, 2019): Without pollinators our world would be less colorful and less tasty. Because these useful critters pollinate much of our food and our flowers. There’s a surprising number of pollinators, too. Not just bees. But flies, moths, bats, and even birds & reptiles pollinate different plants! They all deserve our thanks and our protection. Learn more about them for this week!

Animal Rights Awareness Week (June 16 – 22, 2019): For the 3rd week in June we recognize that animals (all animals) have rights too. Whether they’re our pets, our food source, or wild animals just trying to survive, they all have the right to be treated humanely. While there is plenty of debate over how much (or even if) animals feel emotions, there is no doubt they can feel pain. And that’s reason enough to not hurt them.

Craft Spirits Week (June 16 – 22, 2019): Celebrate craft spirits with tastings, distillery tours, and more! See if there’s an event near you.

Bartender of The Year Week (June 17 – 20, 2019): It’s the finals of the Bartender of the Year competition! It’s a competition run by Heaven Hill Brands, with bartenders submitting 2 original recipes online and culminating in this week, which will crown a winner. Think you may have what it takes to be 2020’s winner? Start working on creating your original recipes now, so you can submit them when the time comes (mid-September!). And check out this year’s finalists’ stories for inspiration!

Celebration Days coming up for June 17 thru June 23

Once again deliciousness abounds this week, with ice cream sodas, chocolate eclairs, & sushi to enjoy. Along with vegetables, martinis, & more.

In between the deliciousness, thank your garbage man, go fishing, and take your dog to work. Then learn about nystagmus and autism. Listen for the cuckoo’s song and go camping.

With all these & more to choose from, how can you not create a fun-tastic week for yourself?

June 17:

Eat Your Vegetables Day: The entire month of June may be Fresh Fruits & Vegetables Month, but this day focuses specifically on the veggies. So make sure you load up on those for this day. Maybe even eat vegetarian for the day?

World Tessellation Day: On M. C. Escher’s birthday we celebrate repeated patterns. Why? Because 1.: Escher made art from tiled patterns, and 2. A pattern-lover wanted a day to celebrate. Check out the day’s Facebook page for some mesmerizing tessellation examples.

National Garbage Man Day: It’s not a glamorous job, but it is an important one! Hauling away and processing the trash we generate helps keep our communities clean and our lives safer & healthier. So thank a garbage man for this day. Your garbage pick-up is a different day? That’s ok! Although it’s called a day, the celebration apparently lasts all week. So thank your garbage man whenever you see him (or her!).

Stewart’s Root Beer Day: Enjoy an ice-cold, frothy Stewart’s root beer for this day. And no, no other root beer brand will do for this celebration! That may be acceptable for other days, like National Root Beer Float Day. But for this day, the brand of root beer you must drink is right there in the name!

National Apple Strudel Day: Enjoy spiced apples & raisins rolled into a thin, flaky crust. We’re not really sure why this day happens in summer, since it feels more like a fall/winter delight … unless the day’s creator lives where June is winter! Not that the weather should stop you from celebrating. If you’d like to make your apple strudel yourself, this recipe looks easy(ish).

June 18:

International Sushi Day: If you were looking for an excuse to head out to your favorite sushi place, this is it! And even if you weren’t, now you have a reason to go. Or, if you enjoy making sushi as much as eating it, then make all your favorites and enjoy.

Autistic Pride Day: This is a day to celebrate that which makes people on the autism spectrum different. Because different is not bad or weird or shameful, it’s just … different!

National Go Fishing Day: On this day you play hooky from work and all responsibility, and you use the free time you just created to go fishing. Go with friends and/or family, or go alone. However you prefer to fish is the right way to celebrate. Then use what you catch to make yourself some sushi! (Yes, you can cook it first).

National Splurge Day: On this day you treat yourself without worrying about cost, calories, or what anyone else might think. Ok, maybe you should consider cost a little bit. As in don’t go broke treating yourself. And if it costs more than you have in the bank it’s a horrible idea to buy it. But if there’s something you’ve been wanting, or wanting to do, this could be the perfect day to splurge on it. (Maybe something to help you celebrate Go Fishing Day?).

June 19:

Garfield the Cat Day: Celebrate Garfield’s birthday! The comic strip featuring a fat orange cat with attitude debuted on this date in 1978. That means Garfield is 41 years old! But the old guy is still going strong. Must be all that lasagna. ;)

World Sauntering Day: On this day we slow down. Stop to smell the roses. Pay attention to the world around us. We don’t run or even walk fast, mindlessly aiming ourselves at our next destination. Instead we saunter, paying attention to all that’s around us.

FreeBSD Day: What/who is BSD and why are we trying to free it? Uh, no. It’s already free! FreeBSD is an open-source operating system. It’s been around for more than 25 years, and lots of popular programs & apps use code from the original project. You probably use at least one of them! You can learn more about FreeBSD here.

National Watch Day: Watches have existed for more than 500 years, but this day has only been around since 2017. Although many people just use their phones to know the time these days, watches are still popular. Your choice in watch makes a statement about your personal style. So if you have a watch, be sure to wear it for this day (even if you don’t normally wear it anymore!).

National Martini Day: Hopefully you won’t be too stressed after sauntering all day, but you can still enjoy a martini to end your day. Or, if all your sauntering has caused someone else stress, treat that person to a martini as a thank you for putting up with you all day! Make it a traditional gin martini or go with one of the drink’s many variations, like a cosmopolitan or appletini.

June 20:

World Productivity Day: Learn how to stop procrastinating and become more productive. Or celebrate your productivity. Whichever works for you.

American Bald Eagle Day: Celebrate the Bald Eagle, America’s National Symbol. We celebrate on the anniversary of the date when the design of the Great Seal of the United States was finalized, with the bald eagle in its center (June 20, 1782).

National Ice Cream Soda Day: Put your favorite ice cream in your favorite soda pop and enjoy! Especially if the last time you had an ice cream soda was when you were a child.

Vanilla Milkshake Day: Whip up a creamy vanilla milkshake to celebrate this day. And yes, you can indulge in both an ice cream soda and a milkshake on the same day!

Nystagmus Awareness Day: If you have no clue what nystagmus is, then you know why we need this day! Nystagmus is a condition that causes involuntary eye movements. And despite it not being very well-known, the condition is more common than you might think.

National Dump the Pump Day: On this day we conserve our own gas (and wear & tear on our cars), and ride public transportation. So if you don’t normally take public transit, give it a try! You might find it lowers your commute time and your stress levels (no sitting in traffic & fuming!). Your public transit system may even offer free rides for the day or have other promotional offers. Last year Chicagoans at some stops got free coffee for their morning commute!

June 21:

Cuckoo Warning Day: Will this summer be wet or dry? The cuckoo’s song (or lack of song) will tell you! So listen to see if the cuckoo sings on this day.

National Daylight Appreciation Day: On this day we get the most daylight of the entire year. So it’s appropriate we appreciate it! The daylight hours will get shorter again going forward (although it’ll be a while before we really notice it). So take advantage while you can.

National Seashell Day: Collect seashells for this day! If you can, head to the Beaches of Ft. Myers & Sanibel, where the day started in 2016. Apparently the shelling is amazing there.

Take Your Dog to Work Day: Prepare to get absolutely no work done and play with dogs all day! Although if you hope to convince your bosses to let you take part, you should probably promise to get at least the most critical items crossed off your to-do list.

World Giraffe Day: Who doesn’t love giraffes? They’re so goofy looking, but also so cute! But like many animals these days, they face challenges to their survival in the wild. Overall the giraffe is considered a vulnerable species, with some subspecies critically endangered. For this day learn more about these fascinating animals and what they need to survive.

International Day of Yoga: This day encourages us to join body & mind with the practice of yoga. If you don’t already do yoga, this is the perfect day to give it a try. And if you do, then make sure you do it for this day! Maybe celebrate by learning a new pose?

June 22:

Stupid Guy Thing Day: This is the day to celebrate the stupid things guys do. Or maybe shake our heads at the stupid things guys do. Share your best (or worst?) stupid guy thing stories. See who has the stupidest one!

Great American Campout Day: Go camping! At least for the night. Preferably for the whole weekend.

World Rainforest Day: Rainforests are vital to all life on earth. Yes, even the life that doesn’t live near one (like most of us). But about half of the life on the planet (both plants and animals) actually does live in rainforests. Sadly, these critical resources are disappearing quickly. Learn more about the rainforests, how they help us, and how we can help them for this day.

National Chocolate Eclair Day: Can you take chocolate eclairs camping? We sure hope so, ‘cause how else can we enjoy both on the same day?! Although we suppose you could enjoy your eclairs before you head for the campground.

National Onion Rings Day: Another food that’s not exactly standard camping food. But they’re delicious, so who cares! There’s nothing stopping you from making onion rings over your camp fire.

June 23:

Pink Flamingo Day: This day honors the kitchy (but still oddly popular) pink plastic flamingo yard decorations created by Don Featherstone way back in 1957. Flock your yard (or even the whole neighborhood!) for the day.

National Pink Day: Flamingos aren’t the only thing pink for June 23! The day also celebrates all things pink. So if you’ve chosen to wear pink as part of your Pink Flamingo Day celebration, you’ll be celebrating two days in one.

Typewriter Day: Celebrate the granting of a patent for an improved type-writing machine back in 1868. Apparently this very first “modern” typewriter only had capital letters. Anyone who types with Caps Lock on would feel right at home using it!

National Pecan Sandies Day: Pecan Sandies are kinda like shortbread. But infinitely better! So enjoy a few of these sweet, nutty cookies for this day. Make them yourself if you can.

National Hydration Day: This day reminds us to stay hydrated during all our warm-weather activities. Of course this is important to remember any time you’re doing things that make you sweat.
