What to Celebrate June 24 to 30, 2019
Can you believe we’re heading into the final week of June?!
The forecast here is looking mostly warm & wet. Luckily wet weather doesn’t have to dampen spirits for celebrating. After all, you gotta eat, so food celebrations are perfect for any weather!
Likewise, celebrating fairies, parchment paper, and the Happy Birthday song are completely immune to weather. And as for Lightning Awareness, well stormy days are the perfect reminder to make sure you know how to stay safe from lightning.
So what are you waiting for? (please don’t say “lightning to strike”!). Keep reading to take a peek and plan your week.
And always remember to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate for the rest of June
There may only be a week left in the month, but that’s plenty of time to indulge in steaks, soul food, and papayas! Not necessarily at the same meal.
And if you don’t already own your own home, learn a bit about homeownership. So next year you can celebrate (most of) these food holidays in your very own home!
National Steakhouse Month: It’s not too late to celebrate this tender, juicy, & downright mouthwatering month. But don’t make your steaks at home! Head out to your favorite steakhouse to celebrate right.
National Soul Food Month: Celebrate the ways people originally brought to America as slaves have enriched our food choices. And of course, make yourself some soul food. If you don’t already have soul food favorites, take a look at these.
National Papaya Month: Enjoy papaya any time of day. It’s sweet, low-calorie & nutrient-packed. Start with these recipes.
National Homeownership Month: Are you hoping to buy your own home one day? Maybe even one day soon? This is the perfect time to learn more about how to make that happen.
Weekly Celebrations for June’s 4th Week
This week is all about learning … how to stay safe from both lightning and mosquitoes. And if you can make it to Maine, put that knowledge to good use while carrying around fish, watching boats on parade & more. (Although it looks like you may only need to worry about storms & lightning for one day if you go).
National Lightning Safety Awareness Week (June 23 – 29, 2019): Do you know how to stay safe during thunderstorms/around lightning? Spend some time this week learning about lighting and how to stay safe both indoors and outdoors. (Hint: Outdoors is never truly safe during storms, but you can do things to be a little safer).
National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (June 23 – 29, 2019): Mosquitoes are more than just nuisances. They can carry diseases that can be deadly. During this week, make sure you’re doing all you can to control the mosquito population in your yard.
Windjammer Days (June 23 – 29, 2019): This annual festival is Boothbay Harbor, Maine’s annual summer kickoff party. And what a party it is! There’s a boat parade, a street parade, and concerts. Plus fireworks, a lobster eating contest, and so much more. Why not get yourself a team together & try your hand at the cod fish relay?! Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like: a relay race in which you carry fish around. Sounds like the perfect reason to make some last-minute plans to get to Maine!
Celebration Days coming up for June 24 thru June 30
Onions & food trucks & catfish .. Oh, my! These are just 3 of the foods we’re celebrating this week. Others are a bit sweeter, like ice cream cake!
We also celebrate our senses, remember to wear sunglasses, and review our insurance coverage. And did you know we’re hitting the half-way mark to Christmas? It’s all “downhill” from here! (That’s a good thing, in this case).
So let’s make it another fun-tastic week, full of fairies and canoing and watching for meteors.
June 24:
International Fairy Day: Keep a look out for fairies this evening, and leave them some gifts. Maybe even build a fairy house.
Celebration of the Senses Day: One of the dozens of holidays created by Tom & Ruth Roy, this day invites us to use all of our senses. By experiencing all 5 of our senses we can tap into the 6th sense.
National Praline Day: On this day we indulge in the sweet treat called pralines. This delightful concoction of nuts & a sugary syrup just can’t be beat. If you’d like to make your own, consider this pecan praline recipe.
June 25:
National Catfish Day: This day is all about farmed catfish. So enjoy some to celebrate.
Global Beatles Day: Celebrate The Beatles, their music, and their contribution to the global society. We celebrate on the anniversary of the date The Beatles first performed All You Need is Love on live, global television in 1967.
National Strawberry Parfait Day: Enjoy a strawberry parfait for dessert this evening. Or make it with yogurt (instead of ice cream or custard) & granola for a light breakfast. However you enjoy your parfait, just make sure it has strawberries!
Leon Day: On this day we celebrate the half-way mark to Christmas! What does Leon have to do with Christmas? It’s Noel spelled backwards! If you’re a Scrooge who find June entirely too early to think about Christmas, you have permission to skip this day. But if you’re already counting the days, then shout it from the rooftops!
June 26:
National Canoe Day: Set aside your to-do list for this day & get out on the water in a canoe or kayak (which is really just a kind of canoe). The list will still be there when you get back, and you might even have a renewed enthusiasm for tackling it after a fun & relaxing (or exhausting!) day of paddling.
National Parchment Day: On the last Wednesday in June we cook with parchment paper. Make all your meals “en papillote” (wrapped in parchment paper). Line your baking trays with parchment. Give parchment cooking bags or baking cups a try. Just use parchment!
National Chocolate Pudding Day: Enjoy a dish of luscious chocolate pudding to celebrate the day. Maybe even try making it yourself with this Double-Chocolate Pudding recipe.
National Coconut Day: Celebrate the delicious & versatile coconut! Eat coconut, use coconut-enriched skin or hair products. Maybe even combine your chocolate pudding & coconut celebrations by making this Chocolate Coconut Milk Pudding.
Same Sex Marriage Day: On this date in 2015 same sex marriage became legal everywhere in the US when the Supreme Court ruled on Obergefell v Hodges (PDF).
June 27:
National PTSD Awareness Day: Learn about PTSD, its signs, and how to help someone suffering with it. It’s not something you can “snap out of,” and nobody should feel bad about asking for help.
“Happy Birthday to You” Day: Celebrate the birthday of the woman who wrote the melody to the song almost everybody hears on their birthdays. Mildred Hill was born on June 27, 1859. She originally composed the tune for a song called Good Morning to All, for use in schools. If you don’t know anybody celebrating a birthday on this date, why not sing Happy Birthday to Mildred?
National Ice Cream Cake Day: Ice cream cake is a delightfully sweet way to celebrate a summer birthday. So why not have an ice cream cake to celebrate “Happy Birthday to You” Day? You can celebrate Mildred’s birthday and the birthday of the woman in whose honor this day exists, Johanna Jurado.
National Sunglasses Day: This day reminds us that protecting our eyes from harmful UV rays is just as important as protecting our skin. So make sure you’re wearing sunglasses with both UVA and UVB protection. And not just on this one day. Make it a daily habit, all year round!
National Onion Day: Celebrate the very first National Onion Day with lots & lots of onions! Top burgers, hot dogs, or tacos with fresh onion. Saute onions to add to pretty much everything. Take it further & caramelize them for a sweet taste. Maybe even pickle some! This day celebrates the founding of the National Onion Association on June 27, 2013.
June 28:
National Logistics Day: Logistics involves coordinating the activity and/or movement of a large number of people, supplies, equipment, etc. If you’ve ever tried to do this, you know it’s no easy task! But the world’s economies depend on it. So this day celebrates the importance of logistics to all our lives.
National Food Truck Day: Support your local food trucks on this day! See if there will be a food truck parked near you offering deals in honor of the day.
National Insurance Awareness Day: Surely everyone is aware of insurance these days? Yes, most people are. But rather than raise awareness of insurance, this day is for reviewing your insurance coverage and making sure it still meets your needs. That includes any kind of insurance—health, auto, small business, etc. If there’s something you’re not sure about, set an appointment to talk with your insurance agent.
Paul Bunyan Day: On this day we celebrate the legendary hero of American folklore, Paul Bunyan … and of course his blue ox Babe! Why not celebrate by reading some Paul Bunyan tales for the day?
June 29:
World Camera Day: Learn a bit about the history of the camera and photography for this day. Then go out & take some pictures! And take a moment to thank George Eastman for making the camera available to “regular” people.
National Almond Buttercrunch Day: For this day enjoy the sweet, crunchy concoction that is basically chocolate-covered toffee topped with almonds. You’ll need a candy thermometer if you plan to make it yourself. But there’s nothing wrong with heading out to your local candy shop & buying yourself some.
National Waffle Iron Day: Use your waffle iron to enjoy waffles all day in celebration of this day. Of course waffles make a perfect breakfast, topped with fruit, syrup, and/or whipped cream. But the popularity of chicken and waffles proves these deliciously fluffy & crispy creations go with just about anything. And any meal!
International Day of the Tropics: This day celebrates the tropics’ diversity but also recognizes the challenges countries in the tropics face. Why not learn more about this important region for the day?
June 30:
Log Cabin Day: Celebrate simpler times & contemplate life in a log cabin. If there’s a park or campground with cabins for rent, consider staying in one for the night (or the whole weekend!).
Social Media Day: Speaking of simpler times, the days before social media took over the world look really good some days! Although this day celebrates social media, the idea is actually to celebrate it in real life, NOT on virtual platforms. So maybe combine 2 celebrations & plan to spend some time in a log cabin with friends you normally only “see” on social media.
National Meteor Watch Day: Head outside in the evening to look for shooting stars! Maybe even make a wish on one. Want to know if you’re likely to see one? Check out the American Meteor Society’s Meteor Activity Outlook for the week. It’ll also help if it’s a cloudless night & you can be away from city lights.
