Celebration Ideas for June 29 - July 5, 2020

Late June & early July Celebrations
Celebration Ideas for June 29 – July 5, 2020

Happy end of June! In another week we’ll be celebrating the 4th. Or have you already been celebrating with fireworks? Supposedly fireworks injuries are up this year, so we’re pretty sure some of you have been busy! (We do hope none of those injuries were among our readers).

But before all that we buy US-made products, take some pictures and watch for meteors. And enjoy lots of good foods too.

So as we head into July, go ahead & take a peek and plan your week. And remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All July Long

You still have time to adopt a cat, get started on a pollinator garden, and go camping. Or any of the other June monthly celebrations.

But let’s get a jump on July too! Plan to enjoy baked beans, blueberries & watermelons all month long. Either lounging in the yard or inside appreciating the comfort your AC provides.

Air Conditioning Appreciation Days (July 3 – Aug. 15, 2020): If you have air conditioning, celebrate it! Because you know you appreciate it if you have it. And you may even appreciate it more if you don’t! The air conditioner as we know it has only existed for a bit more than 100 years. But even in ancient times people found innovative ways to keep themselves & their buildings cool(ish).

National Baked Beans Month: Summer is the time for grilling. And what goes with grilled foods? Baked beans! Which you can also cook on the grill if you’d like. But however you make ’em (even if you just heat canned baked beans), make sure you serve ’em all July long. And all summer long for that matter.

National Blueberry Month: After your BBQ & baked beans you’re going to need something fresh & sweet. Blueberries fit the bill! Eat them by the handful or turn them into pies, parfaits, & other desserts. Or make a beautiful blueberry sauce to spoon over ice cream, cheesecakes, or anything else your heart desires.

National Watermelon Month: If blueberries aren’t your thing (are you crazy?!), or you just want to switch things up, slice up fresh watermelon for your sweet treat. Of course, you can also turn your watermelon into a salad or desserts like ice cream.

Weekly Celebrations for 6/29 to 7/5

This week we remember to protect our eyes from damaging sun, chemicals, fireworks, and other potential dangers. And we help our kids, other family members, and friends protect their eyes too.

National Prevention of Eye Injuries Awareness Week (June 29 – July 5, 2020): Eye safety is important all year long. But certain activities around the 4th, like setting off fireworks, are especially dangerous. So during the week of the 4th we remind ourselves how to keep our eyes protected from not only fireworks but sun, chemicals, dust, and more.

Celebration Days coming up for June 29 thru July 5

This looks like a fun week! Not only do we get to celebrate Independence Day and play in the mud, we also get to party with the aliens! 👽 Maybe they’d like to celebrate meteors and fried clams with us too. ☄️

And if not, it’s their loss. They’ll also miss out on playing in the park, wearing bikinis, munching on gingersnaps & more.

In other words, another fun-tastic week!

June 29:

International Mud Day: Grab your kids & go play in the mud! And reflect on the generosity of a group of kids who had very little mud to play in but raised money to send clothes to kids who had lots of mud but not enough clothes to risk getting them that dirty. Because that’s how this day began.

National Camera Day: Make sure you bring a camera to document your fun in the mud! And then take pictures of whatever else catches your eye, too. And while phone cameras may technically count, if you have an actual camera use it for the day.

National Waffle Iron Day: You’re going to need a good breakfast before you get dirty in the mud. So pull out that waffle iron & load up your waffles with your favorite toppings. Take pictures of your creations too!

National Almond Buttercrunch Day: What better way to celebrate the start of the week than with sweet, nutty almond buttercrunch?! (For anyone asking “what the heck is buttercrunch?”, it’s basically toffee). And as usual, we’re recommending homemade almond buttercrunch if you can manage it (making toffee is a bit tricky). But store-bought is pretty amazing too.

June 30:

Social Media Day: Despite the name, this is a day for connecting offline, in real life. But you may absolutely use social media to coordinate your real life fun.

National Asteroid Day: Learn about asteroids on this day co-founded by Dr. Brian May. Yes, Queen’s lead guitarist.

National Meteor Watch Day: Then look up to see if any pieces broken off asteroids (or comets) are streaking through the sky above you. And if all these different kinds of space rock are confusing to you, here’s a good explanation of the difference between asteroids, comets, & meteors.

July 1:

ZIP Code Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the ZIP code. This simple 5-number code made it easier for postal workers to figure out where mail needed to go. We’re not sure if using it resulted in less lost mail. But if it did that’s certainly a reason for a party! 🙃

National Postal Worker Day: In addition to celebrating the ZIP code making it easier to get mail where it needs to go, we celebrate all the postal workers who make it actually possible for the mail to get to its destination. Because no matter how well the mail is addressed, it’s going nowhere without people to move & deliver it! So why not thank a postal worker (or 3!) for this day?

Canada Day: This is, obviously, a Canadian celebration. It was on this date in 1867 that the country of Canada came to be, formed from the colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. If you’re not in Canada, wish your Canadian friends a happy Canada Day.

National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day: Many ice cream shops offer seasonal flavors of ice creams that can get quite creative, indeed! Think turmeric, goat cheese & beet, and fruitcake. Of course there’s also less weird but still creative, like chai or caramel-cashew. So head out to your favorite ice cream spot & see what creative flavors you can try.

National Gingersnap Day: Is gingersnap ice cream available anywhere? Because that would be the perfect way to knock out 2 celebrations at once! Or just munch on some crisp, spicy gingersnap cookies. Make ’em yourself if you can! Or, if you prefer a soft cookie, try these soft gingersnap molasses cookies. Not exactly classic, but yummy (and gingery) just the same.

July 2:

World UFO Day: Celebrate the aliens living among us! You do know they’re here, right? 😉 😁 Or celebrate the idea that we might one day make contact with an intelligent life form from another planet. Either way, have fun with it!

Made in the USA Day: On this day we buy only US-made products! Or try anyway, since there are things that aren’t made here. But! We can also use this day to encourage manufacturers to make more of the things we want right here in the USA. Which will make this day easier & easier to celebrate each year!

I Forgot Day: This day offers you the perfect excuse to avoid doing things you’d rather not. Celebrate by saying “I forgot,” whenever you’re asked if you’ve done something. Or why you haven’t done something. But use a bit of common sense. It’s probably best not to “forget” to go to work or attend your child’s birth.

National Anisette Day: If you love licorice flavors celebrate this day with a shot of anisette, the licorice flavored liqueur. Or make a cocktail or two. There are a surprisingly large number to choose from!

July 3:

International Plastic Bag Free Day: This one could be a bit harder to celebrate this year, since the COVID-19 pandemic has caused reusable bag bans in many areas & stores. But do your best to avoid using single-use plastic bags for this day.

International Drop a Rock Day: This day encourages us to get creative & paint a rock (or as many as you’d like!). Then leave them somewhere for others to find. If you like this idea & also don’t like puppy mills, consider joining the #LoveLikeHarley Rocks Facebook group. Members share rocks they have either painted & plan to hide or have found with the #LoveLikeHarley message. Then of course, paint & hide a rock!

National Stay Out of the Sun Day: This day reminds us to avoid the sun’s damaging rays by staying in the shade as much as possible. And, of course, wear sunscreen since shade doesn’t protect you completely.

Eat Your Beans Day: With so many different beans & ways to cook with them, it’s easy to celebrate this day. And make Eat Your Beans Day pretty much any day of the year! Find 30 bean recipes to get you started here.

National Fried Clam Day: Make & eat fried clams. That is all.

National Chocolate Wafer Day: After your beans & your fried clams you’re going to want something sweet. Something chocolaty and sweet would be even better. And chocolate wafers fit the bill! Enjoy.

July 4:

International Cherry Pit Spitting Day: Sadly there won’t be an official Cherry Pit Spitting Contest at the Tree-mendous Fruit farm. But there’s nothing stopping you from having your own contest at your Independence Day cookout!

National Hop-A-Park Day: Forget bar hopping. For this day you go park hopping! And since parks have been finally opening in many states, consider taking advantage & heading out for some fun at the parks. Of course, follow whatever rules are in place to keep you safe. You don’t want to be the reason the parks get closed again.

National Barbecued Spareribs Day: A day when lots of people are BBQ’ing seems like the perfect day to celebrate BBQ’d spareribs! Which is exactly what we’re doing. Make sure you add spareribs to your July 4th meal plan & you’ll be celebrating right.

National Caesar Salad Day: Balance all that meat with some veggies! Or more specifically, Romaine lettuce. Because Caesar salad is a simple salad bursting with flavor from the dressing.

Independence from Meat Day: If barbecued meats aren’t your thing, go vegetarian for the day instead. Start with that Caesar salad (although you might have to modify the dressing a bit). And then try some of the wide variety of meat-like options now available. If you haven’t been paying attention, it’s easier than ever to go completely meat free. For a day or forever.

July 5:

Bikini Day: Put on your favorite bikini and hit the beach or local pool (assuming they’re open). If you have your own pool, even better! Don’t have a bikini because you think you’re not in “bikini shape”? Stop that! Buy a bikini and enjoy.

National Graham Cracker Day: On this day we enjoy s’mores, make pies with graham cracker crusts, or just snack on these sweet little crackers. You might also use them in a crumble topping or between layers of fruit for a parfait. How else do you use graham crackers?

National Apple Turnover Day: But don’t fill up on graham cracker treats. You’ll want to leave room for an apple turnover too. If you’re not too tired from your July 4th festivities, make your apple turnovers from scratch.
