What to Celebrate March 12 thru 18, 2018
As we reach the mid-point of March there’s still plenty to celebrate.
As usual we have an assortment of food, animals, and silliness. Plus a few literary, mathematical, and/or charitable celebrations.
So take a look. Plan your week.
And above all: Enjoy!
Celebrate All March Long
March is the month to be mirthful while enjoying crafting and good nutrition. Seems like a good combination. Certainly crafting can make you happy, which makes it easier to be mirthful. And good nutrition can help you have the energy for both!
International Mirth Month: According to this month’s creator, “Mr. Jollytologist” Allen Klein, its purpose is to turn your “Maalox Moments into more mirthful ones.” Not a bad goal.
National Craft Month: Time to get crafty! Is your favorite crafts store running any specials or having any events to celebrate the month? Might also be a good time to stock up on supplies. ;)
National Nutrition Month: Created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a good source of nutrition information.
Weekly Celebrations For March 12 to March 18
This week we celebrate turkey vultures and Shakespeare … Did the Bard ever write about vultures?
Turkey Vultures Return to the Living Sign (March 11 – 17): Sooo… this is less weird than it sounds! In Canisteo, NY there’s a a group of Scotch pines planted to spell out “Canisteo” … a “living sign”! Apparently the turkey vultures return to the area in mid-March every year.
Shakespeare Week (March 12 – 18): This is a UK celebration, but any parent, teacher, or student can register to use the website resources. So if you or your child is interested in Shakespeare, this looks like a great celebration to join! (Check out the FAQ for more info on registering)
Celebration Days Coming Up For March 12 thru March 18
Yes, of course St. Patrick’s Day is this week. On the weekend, even! So of course you’ll be celebrating that. But there’s so much more. You could even consider adding corn dogs and the recorder to your St. Paddy’s festivities! … or maybe not.
At any rate, this week we have official permission to take a nap, open an umbrella indoors, and ask a question.
We also celebrate animals; some cute (seals) and some not so cute (spiders). Plus foods, math, and forgiveness.
And let’s not forget Freedom of Information Day, on Friday. A day to remember the government answers to you.
March 12:
Fill Our Staplers Day: The day after Daylight Savings Time starts we are to fill our staplers. I don’t know …. Seems a little dangerous to be playing with sharp, pokey things so soon after losing an hour of sleep!
Napping Day: Another day that happens the day after Daylight Savings Starts. And this makes a whole lot more sense! Although … I suppose we could fill our staplers after that nap …
March 13:
K9 Veterans Day: A day to recognize service dogs. All service dogs, military, civilian, and retired. Because they all give or have given their best efforts to keep their humans safe. Many states recognize this as an official day, and there’s a petition to make it a national day.
Ear Muffs Day: So why are we celebrating earmuffs just as the need for them is hopefully going away? (Unless your winter is just starting. In which case: Sorry. :/ ) Because it’s the anniversary of the day their inventor, Chester Greenwood, got a patent for them in 1877!
National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day: A day dedicated to finding out the truth about the superstition (or is it?!) that opening an umbrella indoors brings bad luck. So, open that umbrella somewhere inside and take note of your luck for the day … although I’m not sure if there’s a time limit on the bad luck? Maybe it’ll last forever? Yikes! Are you going to risk it?
March 14:
International Ask a Question Day: Today’s the day to ask away! Whatever questions you have, ask someone who might have the answers.
Potato Chip Day: Today you must eat potato chips. And if you’re somewhere other than the U.S., please call them “chips” for today … tomorrow you may go back to calling them “crisps”!
Pi Day: No, we didn’t misspell “pie.” This pi is the mathematical constant that describes the ratio between a circle’s circumference (the distance around) and its diameter (the distance across, through the center). If you remember your math, that number is 3.14159… So 3/14 represents Pi at its most basic.
Save a Spider Day: Soooo … we’re not too sure about this day. But spiders are quite useful. So maybe just call a truce for one day? No spider squishing allowed today.
March 15:
International Day of Action for the Seals: Today is the day to protest commercial seal hunts. Despite a shrinking market for seal skins, hunters still insist on stuffing warehouses full of the skins. And usually wasting the rest of the animal.
Buzzards Day: This day is apparently specific to Hinkley, Ohio. It’s the day when buzzards (turkey vultures) return to the town. And it’s a big deal! In fact, people visit on the 15th just to see the birds. But even if you’re not in Hinkley, you can celebrate. Spend some time learning about these big, fascinating birds.
National Farm Rescuer Day: The 3rd Thursday in March recognizes the people who support farmers in need. The nonprofit Farm Rescue started the day. Farm Rescue provides free assistance to farm families suffering from illness, injury or natural disaster.
March 16:
Freedom of Information Day: Remember, the public (that’s you!) can ask for information on almost anything the federal government does. And the government is required to hand it over (not that it always does …). Only a few things, like those that might affect national security, are off limits. Most states have similar laws.
Panda Day: Today we celebrate the panda! Specifically the Giant Panda (the red panda has its own day in September). These adorable animals are endangered, mostly because of loss of their forest home. That means fewer places for them to live, and also less bamboo, which they eat.
World Sleep Day: This day wants to remind you sleep is important. So don’t skimp on sleep today. And learn more about the importance of sleep. See if there’s a Sleep Day event near you.
March 17:
Submarine Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the day in 1898 when John Phillip Holland demonstrated his Holland VI submarine for the US Navy. But you don’t have to be all solemn about it. Get creative!
National Corn Dog Day: Apparently corndogs are the perfect food for sustaining yourself while watching “the big men’s college basketball tournament in March.” This day always falls on the 1st Saturday of that tournament.
Play the Recorder Day: Yes, the recorder. That “instrument” every elementary school student must learn to “play”. The entire month of March is actually Play the Recorder Month, which seems excessive. But since this year the day coincides with St. Patrick’s Day, we’re thinking you might appreciate this “music” a bit more after a green beer or two!
March 18:
Forgive Mom and Day Day: Don’t you think it’s about time you forgave them? After all, they’re just human. So in most cases, yes, it’s time. So just do it! (If it’s something really bad, remember forgiving doesn’t have to mean forgetting).
Awkward Moments Day: We’ve all had them. Awkward moments that is. So why do they embarrass us so? No clue. But if we can learn to laugh at them, they can feel a bit less awkward … at least after time has passed. So maybe trade awkward moment stories with friends & see who has the most awkward story.
National Biodiesel Day: Today we celebrate the inventor of the diesel engine, Rudolph Diesel. Mr. Diesel’s original engine ran on peanut oil.
