What to Celebrate March 25 to 31, 2019
The final week of March is upon us! Are you ready for April showers?
Of course, some part of the US have already had entirely too many showers, and we wish them well in drying out & repairing. And a reprieve from additional rain.
And we hope everybody is able to set aside some time in the coming week for something enjoyable. Even just something small. Bake a cake (Black Forest!). Take a walk. Make up your own holiday.
If you’re more in the mood for seriousness you have several choices, from awareness days & months to honoring service members.
So forge ahead to take a peek and plan your week.
And whatever you choose the celebrate in the coming week, remember to enjoy life.
Celebrate for the rest of March
March may be coming to an end, but there’s still time to promote music education, learn about medical conditions, and munch on some celery. And make plans to be in Washington, D.C. for peak cherry blossom blooms!
Music in our Schools Month: Music education is important for all children, and this month highlights the importance of keeping music in our schools.
National Celery Month: Add some crunch to your life with celery! In addition to being a low-calorie food, this veggie is also a good source of fiber plus Vitamins A & C, and potassium. So add it to your salads, spread stalks with peanut butter, or toss it in soups & stews. Its light flavor goes well with almost anything.
Trisomy Awareness Month: Several health & developmental abnormalities happen when someone has an extra copy of certain chromosomes. Having cells that contain 3 copies of a chromosome instead of the usual 2 is called trisomy. And the effects of this condition depend on which chromosome is “extra.” You’ve probably heard of Down Syndrome (we just observed Down Syndrome Day on the 21st). But other trisomies cause more severe problems, and the children often die before or shortly after birth.
SUDC Awareness Month: So if you’re like most people you’ve probably never heard of SUDC. We’d actually never heard of it until yesterday! SUDC stands for Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood. It’s when a nobody can explain why a child died, even after an autopsy & investigation. It’s similar to SIDS, which you may have heard of. But SIDS refers only to kids under one year old. SUDC refers to children over 12 months. It’s very rare, but it’s also devastating to the family when it does happen.
National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20 – April 14, 2019): The cherry blossoms are blooming! But you’ve still got time. Peak bloom is predicted for April 3 – 6. This month-long festival commemorates Tokyo mayor Yukio Ozaki’s 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees to Washington DC .
Weekly Celebrations for March’s final week
This week we honor doctors and health information professionals. We applaud the big way tiny science affects our lives. And we get some cleaning done. Whew! That’s a busy week.
National Cleaning Week (March 24 – 30, 2019): If you missed National Spring Cleaning Week earlier this month you have another chance to get it done! National Cleaning Week is your week to clear the clutter & the grime. Get yourself ready to enjoy your spring & summer without a mountain of cleaning tasks you’ve been putting off nagging at you!
National Physician’s Week: This week recognizes physicians and their hard work. Patients, thank your doctors. Doctors, thank your colleagues.
Health Information Professionals Week: Doctors aren’t the only healthcare pros we honor this week. Health Information Professionals help ensure doctors have the information they need about their patients, among other things. By ensuring our healthcare data is accurate and secure they help maintain a high quality healthcare system, and they deserve just as much recognition as doctors.
And Nano Days starts on Sunday, March 30. This week is all about nanoscale science and engineering. They call it “the biggest event for the smallest science!” Museums & universities hold all kinds of different events for this week.
Celebration Days coming up for Mar. 25 thru Mar. 31
For March’s swan song we found lots of deliciousness, with cakes & nuts & seafood & waffles among other yumminess.
We honor Medal of Honor recipients and Vietnam War Veterans. We also raise awareness of epilepsy and encourage everyone to know their triglyceride numbers.
We get a bit silly with song titles, creative with scribbles, and relaxed with a walk in the park.
With all these choices & more you’re sure to have another fun-tastic week!
March 25:
National Medal of Honor Day: Six men who were part of a raid during the Civil War got the very first Medals of Honor on this date in 1863. Now we honor all recipients of this prestigious medal on this day. Congress made this celebration official in 1990.
National Lobster Newburg Day: A sea captain created this creamy lobster dish in the late 1800s. A chef made some changes & added it to his restaurant’s menu, crediting the captain, Ben Wenburg, by calling it Lobster a la Wenburg. The name later changed to Lobster Newburg. Try this recipe to celebrate.
Pecan Day: Celebrate the pecan! Although technically this day seems to celebrate the pecan tree. Specifically George Washington planting a pecan tree at Mount Vernon. But since pecan trees give us pecans (duh!) we’d suggest celebrating by adding pecans to your meals all day. Yum! (National Pecan Day in April is all about the nuts).
Vaffeldagen (Waffles Day): Eat waffles! Preferably heart-shaped. And always with coffee. Smaklig måltid!
March 26:
Make Up Your Own Holiday Day: What? There’s no holiday for your favorite cause/hobby/pet/whatever? Well for this day you get to create it! It won’t be official, but it will be yours.
Live Long and Prosper Day: Celebrate the Vulcan blessing on the birthday of that famous Vulcan, Leonard Nimoy!
National Spinach Day: Celebrate the dark green leaf that makes salads & lots of other dishes extra delicious and nutritious. Add it to all your meals for this day. And, if you like to grow your own greens, plant some! It’s pretty hardy, so you may even be able to plant it outside. If not, at least get it started indoors. Yum!
Purple Day: Help raise awareness of epilepsy. Wear purple, join an event, organize an event, or find other ways to promote awareness in your community.
March 27:
Manatee Appreciation Day: Manatees are just weirdly awesome, and they deserve much more appreciation than they get. Start with this day. Learn more about them. Soon you’ll find yourself appreciating them every day. How can you not appreciate an animal with nipples in its armpits?!
Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day: Some country songs make you wonder what the writer was thinking! Usually in a fun sort of way. And often that feeling starts with the song title. This day celebrates that quirkiness.
International Scribble Day: 2019 is the first annual International Scribble Day, a day to encourage kids to scribble and create art. Parents, scribble with your kids. Teachers, get your whole class involved!
National Little Red Wagon Day: Radio Flyer created this day to celebrate their 100th anniversary (in 2017). As the weather is finally getting nicer it’s the perfect time for your kids to grab their wagons and get outside! Did you have a little red wagon (or any other Radio Flyer toys)? Spend some time reminiscing about the fun you had.
March 28:
National Weed Appreciation Day: One man’s weed is another man’s (or woman’s!) edible greens. Seriously, a “weed” is simply a plant growing where you don’t want it. Which can make pretty much anything a weed. But many of the plants “everyone” agrees are weeds can actually be quite useful. And the people who know this are not part of the “everyone” mentioned above. :)
National Black Forest Cake Day: Mmmm … chocolate cake with cherries, whipped cream, and more chocolate! How can you go wrong? You can’t! Enjoy a big slice to celebrate the day. Need a recipe? This one looks good.
National Something on a Stick Day: On this day eat only foods on sticks! Think Popsicles & creamsicles, corndogs & kabobs. There’s also caramel apples & cake pops. Plus you can put pretty much anything you want on skewers & call it a kabob. Or just cut all your meals into bite-size pieces & pick up those pieces with toothpicks. Voila! Everything’s on a stick. :)
National Triglycerides Day: This day encourages us all to know our triglycerides numbers. This isn’t the same as cholesterol, but like cholesterol too much is a bad thing. So if your doctor doesn’t already include this test in your regular bloodwork, ask about it. Of course, we’re not sure eating cake & foods on sticks is the best way to control your triglycerides …
March 29:
National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day: Mom & pop businesses helped keep towns large & small alive. And still do in many places. If you still have mom & pop businesses near you give them your business for this day. And try to make it a regular habit so they’ll still be around for next year’s celebration.
National Vietnam War Veterans Day: On this day we honor veterans who served during the Vietnam War. Many of these troops were denied recognition at the time because of feelings about the war. But all men & women who served honorably deserve recognition, and now every year they get it. March 29 is the anniversary of the date the last combat troops withdrew from Vietnam.
Knights of Columbus Founders Day: The Connecticut legislature approved the KofC charter on March 29, 1882.
Lemon Chiffon Cake Day: Here’s hoping you’ve finished your Black Forest Cake, because it’s time to switch gears & enjoy the light, refreshing taste of lemon chiffon cake. It’s a bit simpler to make, too. Try this recipe.
March 30:
Earth Hour: From 8:30 to 9:30 this evening turn off all non-essential lights to symbolize your commitment to protecting our planet.
National Doctors’ Day: During National Physician’s Week we also have National Doctors’ Day. A day to thank your doctor for helping keep you healthy and/or figuring out what’s causing your symptoms. If you have a doctor who really listens, that doctor deserves a big thank you!
Worldwide EndoMarch: Help raise awareness of endometriosis. This condition is much more than “just” painful periods. It can affect the whole body. Join a live event or a virtual event. Sponsor a school or an event. Check out the website for other ways to get involved.
International Folding Laundry Day: So, we can’t find a single thing about this day, except lots of holiday lists that say it exists. But it seems like such a worthwhile day! For just this one day everyone in the world will have neatly folded laundry! Assuming everyone celebrates …
National Take a Walk in the Park Day: A leisurely stroll through nature is a great way to relax & unplug. Take a walk alone or with someone who’s company you enjoy. Forget about your stresses & the rest of the world. Just be in the moment & enjoy.
March 31:
Bunsen Burner Day: For this day the handy-dandy heater of flasks, test tubes, inoculation loops & more gets its due! Pretty much anyone who ever took a Chemistry or Microbiology class used this little tool. And of course it also helped scientists make all sorts of useful discoveries. Not bad for a simple contraption that just mixes air & gas!
National Crayon Day: Break out the crayons and draw or color something to celebrate this day! No, you don’t have to be a kid to color with crayons. You just have to enjoy being creative. Artists were using various kinds of crayons long before Crayola came along & created crayons just for kids.
National Clams on the Half Shell Day: Enjoy clams on the half shell your favorite way for this day. Or try something new! Lots of people love them raw (and many don’t!), but smoked, grilled, or steamed are also tasty.
World Backup Day: You don’t need this day because you back up everything to an external drive or the cloud. Right? Right?! Well if you don’t already back up regularly you definitely need this day. But even if you do, have you checked the integrity of your backups lately? Use this day to do that! And maybe consider redundant backups of anything really, truly important.
