Celebration Ideas for May 20 – 26, 2019

Memorial Day weekend is just a week away! Can you believe it? We made it!

But before we get there we have lots of other things to celebrate.

There’s safe boating, biking, and swimming. Also unicycles to ride, strawberries to pick, and tiaras to wear.

Of course, there’s foods to enjoy. Like strawberries & cream, blueberry cheesecake, and quiche Lorraine.

And animal lovers may want to celebrate shelter dogs, turtles, and bees among others.

So forge ahead to take a peek and plan your week. And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of May

Whether you ride bikes or bikes (no that’s not a typo! 😉) this month’s all about your safety.

And after your rides you can get creative with hamburgers & eggs. Not necessarily at the same time (but that is an option!).

Motorcycle Safety Month: Die-hard bikers will often ride in pretty much any weather. But for the rest of us, once the weather warms it’s time to get the bike out. So during May we remind all riders and drivers of motorcycle safety. Bikers, remember to ride safely, which means wear a helmet and obey traffic laws. And drivers, keep an eye out for bikers and don’t follow them too closely!

National Bike Month: Motorcycles aren’t the only bikes coming out of storage this month. Bicycles are also popping up everywhere. Whether you bike regularly or haven’t been on a bike in years, this is the month to get out there and ride. And just like with motorcycles, it’s important for riders and drivers to be respectful of each other, obey traffic laws, and share the road.

National Hamburger Month: Have you been celebrating this delicious month? If you love burgers it’s the perfect month for you. And with this list of 50 burger recipes, it’s almost impossible to get bored with burgers!

National Egg Month: Eggs aren’t just for breakfast! So get creative with these nutrient-rich little nuggets of deliciousness. And if you top your burger with an egg you can celebrate both months at once!

Weekly Celebrations for May 20 – 26

This week is all about outdoor fun & safety. And fun and safety really do go hand in hand. Because getting hurt is never fun (in fact it usually ends the fun). But when you stay safe you get to keep having fun. So get out there and enjoy! (Safely, of course).

National Safe Boating Week (May 18 – 24, 2019): This is an annual reminder to boaters to practice safe boating. Wearing a life jacket is one of the best ways to stay safe. But boating safety also involves paying attention, having a lookout, and avoiding alcohol (at least for the boat’s operator and lookouts).

Healthy and Safe Swimming Week (May 20 – 26, 2019): Everyone, from pool owners (public and private) to parents and swimmers themselves can help ensure a healthy and safe swimming season. That means no drowning, no disease outbreaks, and no chemical injuries. Learn how for this week.

National Backyard Games Week (May 20 – 27, 2019): The week before Memorial Day we start practicing for a summer of fun in the sun. Or something like that. At any rate, we get out in the yard to play games! What games? Any games! Frisbee, horseshoes, tag, catch … Whatever you love.

National Unicycle Week (May 19 – 25, 2019): Speaking of outdoor fun, what could be more fun than unicycling?! Ok, so for some of us “funny” and possibly even “dangerous” might be better words to describe it. But if you’d like to try, this is the week to do that! The Unicycling Society of America (yes, there is such a thing!) has some tips for learning to ride a unicycle here.

Celebration Days coming up for May 20 thru May 26

It’s a jam-packed week, full of loving animals, enjoying good foods (and drinks), and indulging in some silliness.

So what are you waiting for? Check out all the ways you can have another fun-tastic week!

May 20:

National Rescue Dog Day: This day is another reminder to “adopt don’t shop” when you’re looking for your next best friend. And even if you can’t adopt a dog, there’s lots of other ways to help shelter dogs.

World Bee Day: This day reminds us that bees are not flying, stinging pests. They’re quite important, and not just for honey. So for this day learn more about them & add some plants bees love to your yard this year.

National Pick Strawberries Day: If you can make it out to a strawberry patch to pick your own strawberries, do that! If not, at least make plans to do that. Or plant your own strawberry plants so you will be able to pick strawberries all season!

National Quiche Lorraine Day: Start your day with a filling breakfast of Quiche Lorraine. Of course, you could also do breakfast for dinner (or even lunch!) if you’d prefer. The original version was pretty simple, with bacon as the only real addition to the custard filling. This recipe sticks pretty close to that (but with cheese). These days most recipes dress it up quite a bit more, like this one with spinach, chorizo, & more.

May 21:

I Need a Patch for That Day: Do you need patches for anything? Anything at all? This is the day to take care of that!

National Strawberries and Cream Day: Here’s a way to use some of those strawberries you picked on the 20th! Simply top them with some whipped cream & enjoy. So simple, yet soooo delicious. Homemade whipped cream is best, so plan ahead & pick up some whipping cream beforehand.

National Memo Day: On this day we make sure everyone knows what they need to know … by writing & sending memos! Memos are quite useful for making sure everyone is on the same page, so don’t limit your memo use to just this one day. But don’t overuse them either … If you send too many unimportant ones people will start ignoring your memos, and you don’t want that!

National Waitstaff Day: A restaurant’s waitstaff can make or break the dining experience. Great food rarely makes up for poor service. This day honors those hardworking people who hustle hard to make sure everyone has a fantastic experience. So go out to eat & tip extra well for good service. And restaurant owners, make an extra effort to make sure your waitstaff knows you appreciate their efforts.

May 22:

International Day for Biological Diversity: Having many different species of plants & animals (biological diversity) is important for the planet and all of our lives. This day is for raising awareness of this and working toward ensuring we protect our biological diversity and the future health of the planet (and future generations). The theme for 2019 focuses on biodiversity of our foods.

Vanilla Pudding Day: On this day enjoy cool, creamy vanilla pudding. Enjoy it all on its own. Top it with fruits, vanilla waters, and/or whipped cream. Or even layer it with pound cake and your choice of toppings for a simple but delectable dessert. Buy it or make an instant version if you must, but if you have time, try this simple recipe.

World Paloma Day: This bright, refreshing drink is the perfect way to end the day. It’s a popular Mexican cocktail that’s basically a grapefruit margarita. So if you don’t like tequila, this may not be the celebration for you. But if you do, try this recipe, sit back, and relax. Or have a party & serve Palomas!

May 23:

World Turtle Day: How much do you know about turtles? Well this is the day to learn! Because turtles are amazing. But sadly many, many different species of turtles are in danger of extinction.

Red Nose Day: Help fight childhood poverty during this star-studded fundraiser.

Eat More Fruits & Vegetables Day: On the Thursday before Memorial Day comes a reminder to fill your plate with fruits & veggies. And it’s a timely reminder, because unless you’re a vegetarian or vegan, the holiday weekend tends to be heavy on grilled meats! So take this opportunity to plan to throw some fruits & veggies on there too. And in case you’ve never tried such a thing, here are 20 Way to Grill Fruits & Veggies. You’re welcome! Of course, you’ll want to keep eating more fruits & veggies the rest of the year, too. And they don’t all have to be grilled!.

National Taffy Day: Fruits & veggies aren’t the only deliciousness for this day. Indulge in some sweet, buttery taffy too! Mmmm …

National Lucky Penny Day: When was the last time you picked up a penny you found on the ground? Superstition has it that if you see a penny & pick it up you’ll have good luck all day! So why not try it for today? Before pennies disappear forever. These little coins actually cost more to make than their monetary value! And there’s a movement to retire them.

May 24:

Don’t Fry Day: This is your annual reminder to avoid sunburns now that summer is unofficially starting. So as you’re heading out for your Memorial Day weekend fun, grab the sunscreen, sunglasses, and even a hat. Then have fun!

International Tiara Day: This is the day to wear your tiara proudly. Don’t have a tiara? Buy one!

National Escargot Day: Eat snails! Preferably cooked in a butter and/or wine sauce. Not raw as a prank from that brother you’re also celebrating on this day (see below!).

National Wig Out Day: On this day you get to try out a new or crazy hairstyle or color without any commitment at all. Just wear a wig!

National Brother’s Day: If you have a brother, celebrate him for this day. And if you are a brother, demand your due for the day! (As only a brother can …). Don’t have a brother, but have a friend who feels like a brother? Celebrate him!

May 25:

Geek Pride Day: Are you a geek and proud of it? Then this is your day. And if you’re a geek but not proud of it, why not? This is the day to embrace whatever it is you love & run with it.

National Wine Day: Drink wine! Now, this day is different from Drink Wine Day in February. But the way to celebrate is the same! Pop open a bottle of your favorite wine & relax.

World Thyroid Day: Did you know that small gland in your neck is important to keeping the rest of your body working correctly? So for this day learn more about your thyroid, how its hormones affect the rest of your body, and what symptoms could mean yours isn’t working quite right.

May 26:

Blueberry Cheesecake Day: Indulge in a sweet, creamy slice (or 2!) of blueberry cheesecake for this day. Buy it if you must, but make it yourself if you can! It’s pretty simple to do.

National Paper Airplane Day: Make and fly paper airplanes! Get the whole family involved & see who can make their plane fly farthest.

World Lindy Hop Day: Celebrate the birthday of Frankie Manning, a lindy hop legend. And if you don’t know what a lindy hop is, well why not learn a bit about it too? (Hint: It’s a dance).
