What to Celebrate May 27 to June 2, 2019
Memorial Day weekend is here! It’s exciting & confusing at the same time (where, oh where did the 1st 5 months of the year go?).
It’s looking like a warm weekend around here. Which is nice since earlier this week we actually had a couple of days that required turning the heat back on! And one day later we needed the air.
Hopefully your holiday weekend weather will cooperate too.
But no matter what the weather brings for the weekend and next week, one thing we know. Each day brings new celebration possibilities!
So keep reading to take a peek and plan your week. And always remember to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate for the rest of May
There’s only a few days left in May, but that’s still plenty of time to get out & take some pictures, appreciate our armed services members (especially appropriate this weekend), and connect with some older Americans. And if you are an older American, get out there & show the world what you can contribute (if you’re already doing that: good job!).
And since June starts at the end of the week, we bring you a … unique? … month-long celebration to get you started.
Older Americans Month: This month reminds us all that older adults are important parts of their communities. The month’s theme for 2019 is Connect, Create, Contribute, and it encourages older adults and their communities to do just that.
National Photography Month: Whether you’re a professional photographer or a complete beginner, use the rest of this month to practice your photography. Learn and practice a new technique. Try new subject matters. Maybe even find a class to take? How you celebrate is all up to you!
National Military Appreciation Month: Memorial Day, honoring those who died serving our country, isn’t the only celebration of armed services members during May. In fact, the entire month honors all who serve or have served.
And start getting ready for June celebrations! Like this one:
National Bathroom Reading Month: Yes, there’s a whole month devoted to the idea of reading in the bathroom. Usually while you’re pooping. If you already do that, you’re all ready to celebrate! You might like to consider some new reading material in honor of the month. If you don’t practice this particular bathroom habit, well you could try it out for June. Apparently there are some claims it helps you … uhhh … go.
Weekly Celebrations for May 27 to June 2
There’s not much happening in the way of weekly celebrations for the end of May. But that’s ok. You can use the week to get ready for some celebrations starting Sunday, June 2. Like:
National Garden Week (June 2 – 8, 2019): Get out in your garden. Join a gardening club. Or start a garden club! See if there are any programs at your local library or a nearby garden center. Just celebrate gardening.
Pet Appreciation Week (June 2 – 8, 2019): This is different from National Pet Week, but the idea is the same. Show your pet how much you appreciate him or her. Give your pet lots of extra love & attention, playtime (with some new toys?), and maybe a few treats too! You could even make some homemade treats.
Celebration Days coming up for May 27 thru Jun. 2
Of course you know Monday (the 27th) is Memorial Day. But the week offers much more than that! And just a thought … of course Monday is the day to cook all manner of meats on the grill. But you might want to save the hamburgers for Tuesday …
Then as the week moves on we’ll be learning about composting, watering flowers, and going barefoot. We’ll also celebrate & protect otters and coral reefs, plus be a voice for animal rights.
We’ll enjoy mint juleps, brisket, & macaroons. We’ll also get creative, avoid tobacco, and much more.
So let’s have another fun-tastic week!
May 27:
Feral Cat Spay Day: This day reminds us that the best way to control feral cat populations is to spay & neuter them. Since the day began in 2010 it has expanded to become a whole spring campaign to get as many community cats sterilized as possible. And everyone can do their part. Veterinarians do free or low-cost sterilizations. And community cat caretakers get them to their sterilization appointments & back home with as little fuss as possible.
National Cellophane Tape Day: This day celebrates the anniversary of the granting and publishing of the patent for cellophane tape. It happened way back on May 27, 1930.
National Grape Popsicle Day: After you’ve eaten your fill of your favorite Memorial Day foods, enjoy a refreshingly light (and super-summery!) treat: popsicles. But not just any popsicles. Only grape popsicles will do for this day. You can even make your own, and it couldn’t be simpler! (Seriously … it’s just grapes).
May 28:
Slugs Return from Capistrano Day: Get ready for those slimy, garden destroyers to show up & do their damage. So get your arsenal of slug deterrents & slug killers ready. Then get out there and protect your garden!
National Hamburger Day: Hopefully you didn’t get tired of burgers on Memorial Day, because this day demands you eat another! But with so many different ways to top ‘em, surely you won’t mind even a little? You could even host another cook-out to extend the festivities another day. But this time it’s all hamburgers!
National Brisket Day: If you’d rather not celebrate burgers for this day, there’s always brisket! And there’s nothing stopping you from barbecuing it. Here’s 5 recipes for you to consider (including barbecued).
Menstrual Hygiene Day: Menstruation is usually talked about in whispers, if at all. But it’s time for that to change, because the secrecy & stigma surrounding a completely natural function undermines girls’ & women’s opportunity to reach their full potential in many parts of the world.
May 29:
Learn About Composting Day: Do you compost? If you do, then good for you! Your garden thanks you. But you may still have things you can learn to make it more efficient. If you don’t, then learn more about why you should consider it. And how you can do it even if you don’t have a lot of space.
World Otter Day: Learn about otters & their importance to our world. Most otter species are classified as either Near Threatened, Vulnerable, or Endangered. And their numbers are decreasing, so without changes even those “only” near threatened could quickly become endangered. One exception is the North American River Otter, which has a good-sized, stable population.
National Coq Au Vin Day: On this day you must eat Coq Au Vin! Here’s a recipe you may like. It’s pretty simple, but it does take time. Or you might prefer this recipe, which doesn’t require cooking the onions separately.
National Senior Health & Fitness Day: On the last Wednesday in May seniors get out & get active. If you qualify as an “older adult” why not see if a health club, senior center, recreation department, or other organization near you is having an event.
Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day: Do this and you will bring prosperity to your home! Why? No clue. But apparently back when people had larders (food storage rooms) they’d put a piece of cloth torn from an item from the bedroom (blanket, nightgown, etc.) into that larder. Why would that bring prosperity? Again, no clue. And now that we have refrigerators instead of larders we just plop whole pillows on top of them & hope for the best … or something like that. :)
May 30:
Mint Julep Day: Mix up some simple syrup, whiskey, and mint to make this refreshing drink. But don’t get too caught up in the “right” way to add the mint. The important thing is to sit back with your drink, relax, and enjoy.
National Nail Tech Day: This is the day to say thanks to your favorite nail tech. How? However feels right to you: a gift card, an extra-generous tip, or even just a hug.
Loomis Day: What the heck’s a Loomis? Not a what, a who! Mahlon Loomis was a dentist and inventor who envisioned wireless communications way back in the 1800s. He wasn’t to successful at getting his idea to work, and others had similar ideas around the same time. But still we celebrate his vision every May 30.
National Creativity Day: Let your creative spirit fly for this day. Often creative activities get pushed aside in favor of more “productive” or “important” ones. But for this day you have permission to paint, invent, write, crochet, take pictures, or anything else your creative heart desires. Then share your creative work with the world.
National Water a Flower Day: If you have flowers in your garden, or even a pot, get out there & water them for this day. And if you have any elderly or ill neighbors who can’t tend their gardens as well as they used to, water their flowers too. Because blooming flowers bring lots of joy; dead flowers, not so much.
May 31:
World No Tobacco Day: This day asks all tobacco users to quit for 24 hours. And not just smoking. No using smokeless tobaccos or vaping allowed either!
National Macaroon Day: Mmmm … crispy & chewy macaroons. Who can resist? And for this day you don’t have to! So enjoy a few of these delightful little cookies to celebrate. Here’s a simple coconut macaroon recipe for you to try.
Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Day: Learn more about his potentially dangerous infection for this day. And help spread awareness of it.
June 1:
National Heimlich Maneuver Day: Do you know what to do if someone’s choking? If not, why not learn this lifesaving technique to celebrate the day. Think you’ll never need to use it? Think again. This young lady recently saved her friend less than 24 hours after learning the technique!
World Reef Awareness Day: Our world’s coral reefs are dying. And we can each change our habits to help stop it (and hopefully reverse it). Because these ocean communities are more important than you may realize. We need them. And they need us to care.
National Nail Polish Day: Get your nails done to celebrate the day! Or do your nails yourself. Whatever you prefer. Just get those nails polished with something bright & summery. Maybe do your toenails, too? After all, you need to be prepared for …
National Go Barefoot Day: Kick off your shoes & enjoy the feeling of grass/dirt/sand under your feet! And then consider donating your shoes to Soles4Souls. The organization began (and created the day) to help victims of natural disasters by getting them shoes to wear. It has since expanded to help people “step out of poverty.” But it also still mobilizes to get shoes and clothes into areas affected by natural disasters.
June 2:
Yell “Fudge” at the Cobras in North America Day: Do your part to ensure cobras never overrun North America. Yell “fudge” at them at noon to keep them away for another year! :)
National Animal Rights Day: It’s their world too. And we need to be their voice. This day raises awareness of the cruelty too often suffered by animals at the hands of humans. The day’s organizers, Our Planet. Theirs too. wants to end their suffering everywhere.
National Rocky Road Day: Enjoy a dish (or 2) of chocolately, nutty rocky road ice cream! Mmmm … a perfect way to end your Sunday & prepare for the week ahead.
