Celebration Ideas for November 12 – 18, 2018

Time marches on, and by this time next week we’ll be more than 1/2-way through November!

But there’s always something to celebrate. And in the process of celebrating we get to learn, eat, drink, or just love. And do it with appreciation. So don’t waste a single precious day.

Dive right in to take a peek and plan your week.

And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All During November

Once again we bring you an eclectic mix of month-long celebrations. Cancer is an unpleasant topic for ourselves and our pets. But finding it early and understanding treatment options is just as important for them as for you.

In more upbeat celebrations we practice gratitude and enjoy pomegranates. And help kids get excited about books. Perhaps we could even be grateful for pomegranates & picture books?

Pet Cancer Awareness Month: It’s a sad topic, but also an important one. If you live with precious furballs, you’ll want to know the signs & your options. You might also want to think about whether pet insurance is for you.

Picture Book Month: Start getting kids getting excited about real, physical books early … with picture books. Sure ebooks are convenient, but they just can’t compare to real books.

National Pomegranate Month: Pomegranates are delicious and nutritious. They contain lots of stuff your body likes, like fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Plus they’re anti-inflammatory! They’re also versatile. You can eat them plain as a snack, cook with them, or make drinks with them. Try one or more of these recipes from POM Wonderful.

National Gratitude Month: Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to feel thankful. Feel it all month long! And it couldn’t hurt to keep that gratitude going all year long …

Weekly Celebrations for November 12 – 18

For the 2nd full week in November we learn more about geography and fraud. Both important topics in their own way. And we enjoy simple but delicious split pea soup as we learn!

Geography Awareness Week (November 11 – 17, 2018): Understanding geography helps you understand world issues and how they affect you. And how you can affect them. So let’s all try to learn a bit more geography for this week.

International Fraud Awareness Week (November 11 – 17, 2018): How much do you know about fraud and how to prevent it? The week is billed as “… an opportunity for anti-fraud professionals and communities to come together to look at how far reaching the effects of fraud can be.” But we all need to be vigilant against it, for example Identify Theft can affect anyone.

National Split Pea Soup Week (November 11 – 17, 2018): If all that learning about geography & fraud is making you hungry, you’re in luck! Make yourself a big pot of split pea soup. Here’s a simple slow cooker recipe that leaves you with no excuses not to make this hearty, healthy soup!

Celebration Days coming up for Nov. 12 thru Nov. 18

Once again we have a delicious week to enjoy. From French dip and pickles to hermit cookies, spicy guacamole, and homemade bread you’re sure to find something to tantalize those taste buds.

We also take a hike (in a good way), practice kindness and tolerance, and thank OR nurses. Plus much more.

How will you make next week a fun-tastic one?

November 12:

Fancy Rat & Mouse Day: If you fancy fancy rats & mice then this day is for you! The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association created this day a few years ago. Did you know there are pet shows and competition shows for fancy rats & mice?!

National French Dip Day: Celebrate the very first annual day dedicated to the juicy, flavorful (and kinda’ messy!) sandwich known as the French dip. We don’t have to tell you how to celebrate … right? Cole’s French Dip created the day to celebrate its 110th anniversary. It is one of 2 Los Angeles restaurants that claim to have created the French Dip.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Day: This day celebrates you! So do that. You might also want to read one of the Chicken Soup books. Or read this interview with the series’ Editor-in-Chief in honor of the 2014 Chicken Soup for the Soul Day.

November 13:

Young Readers Day: This day raises awareness of the joys (and benefits) of reading. It’s been an annual event on the 2nd Tuesday in November since 1989! So help your kids or kids in your community discover that joy.

World Kindness Day: Spend the day spreading kindness! It doesn’t have to be a big gesture; small acts of kindness are often the most meaningful. The World Kindness Movement created the day, and the date is the anniversary of the 1st World Kindness Movement conference.

National Indian Pudding Day: This obscure New England dish may be America’s first dessert creation. It used “Indian corn” (maize), milk, and molasses. It’s apparently quite plain & not very appetizing-looking, but also sweet & comforting. So if you’re feeling creative (or brave) consider making some for this day!

November 14:

Operating Room Nurse Day: OR nurses have an important job! So it’s only right they also have their own day. If you know any OR nurses, give them a big “Thank You” for this day. Get some other fun ideas for how to celebrate here.

National Pickle Day: This is the day to munch on pickles all day! (You might know someone who does this every day). The kind of pickle is up to you: bread & butter, dill, Kosher, lime … it’s all up to you.

National Spicy Guacamole Day: Avocados are delicious and nutritious. And so are chili peppers. So make yourself a bowl of creamy, spicy goodness to celebrate this day. If you need a recipe, give this one a try.

November 15:

Beaujolais Nouveau Day: On the 3rd Thursday in November French vintners release the year’s Beaujolais Nouveau wines and the country celebrates.

National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day: Have you ever heard of Hermit cookies? They apparently come from New England, and they’re full of the warm fall/winter spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Plus raisins/dates/nuts/etc. They sound divine, and so does this recipe.

America Recycles Day: This day raises awareness of the benefits of recycling. And it encourages us to recycle every day, not just on November 15! So take the pledge, and maybe even join an event.

November 16:

National Button Day: Wear only clothing with buttons for this day! Or at least learn a bit about buttons. Did your grandmother save buttons from old clothes? Your mother? Do you? Did you know there’s actually a National Button Society?

National Fast Food Day: If you only eat fast food occasionally, this is the perfect day to indulge. For one meal at least. Did you know you can find American fast food restaurants in more than 100 other countries?

International Day for Tolerance: Tolerance often seems to be in short supply these days. So lets use this day to appreciate our differences and respect each other.

November 17:

National Take a Hike Day: It’s on a Saturday this year, so most of you have no reason not to put on a pair of good shoes & head out for a hike. Not sure where to hike near you? This page may be able to help.

National Adoption Day: This day raises awareness of all the kids in foster care who need and want their own families.

National Homemade Bread Day: Bake some bread for this day! It’ll make your home smell amazing. And it’ll taste good too … but the smell! Don’t have a recipe? Try this basic bread recipe.

November 18:

National Vichyssoise Day: We’re not sure why we’re celebrating a cold soup during cold weather, but apparently we are. Don’t let stop you from enjoying a bowl or two … and even though it’s traditional to serve it cold, you can eat it hot! Try this recipe.

Mickey Mouse Day: Celebrate the anniversary of Mickey’s big screen debut on Nov. 18, 1928. The film was Steamboat Willie, and it catapulted the lovable mouse to stardom. And eventually a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

National Apple Cider Day: Mmmm … apple cider. It’s a quintessential fall drink. Enjoy a glass or 2 to celebrate the day. Have it hard (alcoholic) or not. Hot or cold. It’s all up to you!
