Celebration Ideas for November 19 – 25, 2018

Can you believe we’re half-way through November? Here in the US Thanksgiving is just a few days away. It snuck up on us this year! How about you?

Whether or not you celebrate the US Thanksgiving there’s plenty of other things to celebrate. And to be thankful for.

You don’t need any official holiday to be thankful.

Thankfulness doesn’t always have to be completely serious either. Of course anyone with good friends, family, and health are thankful for those things.

But you’re also allowed to be thankful for historic bridges, American made products, and espressos. Or any of the other special days/weeks/months happening now.

So why not take a moment to take a peek and plan a thankful week. And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of November

We bring you an eclectic mix of things to celebrate for the rest of this month. Like raising awareness of COPD and historic bridges. And we do it while enjoying banana pudding and sipping our drinks through reusable straws only.

Banana Pudding Lovers Month: Have you been eating banana pudding this month? No? Start celebrating! And if you have time, make the glorious layered creation that is the only true banana pudding. At least in a Southern household!

No Straw November: Skip the single-use plastic straws for this month. And when you see how easy it is, skip them every day all year! If you really do need a straw, get yourself some reusable ones.

Historic Bridge Awareness Month: Bridges are amazing feats of engineering, helping us cross wide rivers & narrower creeks with equal ease. The old wooden covered bridges inspire a sense of nostalgia too. And we owe it to ourselves to learn about them and preserve them when we can.

National COPD Awareness Month: For all of November we learn more about this respiratory disease and help others do the same. One important thing to know is that while smoking is a common cause, it’s not the only one!

Weekly Celebrations for Nov. 19 – 25, 2018

This week we raise awareness of GERD … you could have it and not even realize it!

We also consider a kinder sort of justice and add puzzles & games to our holiday week festivities.

GERD Awareness Week (Nov. 18 – 24, 2018): Learn more about this common condition and help spread the word. Frequent heartburn is a symptom, but not the only one. And GERD is more than just inconvenient. It can raise your risk for other, more serious problems.

Restorative Justice Week (Nov. 18 – 25, 2018): Learn about restorative justice and how it can help create healthier communities through healing.

National Game and Puzzle Week (Nov. 18 – 24, 2018): During the week of Thanksgiving, when you’re already getting together with family & friends, keep the gatherings fun with games and puzzles.

Celebration Days coming up for Nov. 19 thru Nov. 25

If you’re in the US Thursday is, of course, Thanksgiving. And we encourage you to give thanks and enjoy family and friends on that day and all week.

But don’t let preparing for the day overwhelm you. It’s supposed to be enjoyable, not stressful! Consider taking some time to enjoy other, less official (mostly completely unofficial!) holidays this week.

Some of these days complement Thanksgiving (like Tie One On Day). Others may leave you with dessert & treat options for your Thanksgiving … peanut butter fudge & gingerbread cookies anyone?

However you choose to spend the week, make it a fun-tastic one!

November 19:

American Made Matters Day: Support American manufacturers by buying at least one thing made in America on this day. And maybe consider making it an American Made holiday season this year? This day began in 2013, created by an organization called American Made Matters®.

Have a Bad Day Day: Tom & Ruth Roy of Wellcat sympathize with anyone who gets tired of well-wishers constantly insisting they must “have a nice day.” For this one day they offer you a break and a wish for you to “have a bad day”! Although we’re unsure how you can have a bad day if you’re also celebrating the next holiday …

National Play Monopoly Day: Monopoly! If you haven’t played in a while (or even if you played yesterday), get out the game board and play. It is after all Game and Puzzle Week! Do you prefer the classic game or a themed variation?

November 20:

National Peanut Butter Fudge Day: It’s another fudgy day! This one is all about peanut butter fudge (as opposed to nutty fudge, penuche fudge, & others). So enjoy a piece or 2 of creamy (or crunchy!) peanut buttery fudge. If you’d like to make it yourself, consider this simple recipe.

Name Your PC Day: Does your computer have a name? No? Give it one! Why? Well maybe because you spend more time with it than with your family or friends? Now technically any computer on a network has a name to identify it on that network. But that’s not the name we’re talking about here. We’re talking about something more personal … just between you and your favorite bundle of electronic components! This is yet another fun day from Tom & Ruth Roy.

National Absurdity Day: Be absurd all day! It’s ok, you have permission for this one day. We’d like to propose that naming your PC could qualify as absurd. But making and eating peanut butter fudge is not absurd.

November 21:

Tie One On Day: No, this day is not suggesting you go out & get hammered. It wants you to “Give from the heart” on the day before Thanksgiving. So where does the apron come in? According to the Apron Memories website, you should wrap a baked good (homemade if you can!) in an apron & tuck a note into the pocket. Then give the package to someone who could use some kindness.

National Gingerbread Cookie Day: Bake and enjoy gingerbread cookies for this day. Maybe even include some of them in the apron-wrapped package you’re making for Tie One On Day. You could even make it a gingerbread cookie baking (and apron-wrapping) party with family & friends.

National Red Mitten Day: This Canadian holiday supports Canadian athletes. Hudson’s Bay donates $3.90 CDN from the sale of each of its red mittens to support the athletes. The company created its now-iconic mittens in 2010 and started this day just last year. If you’re Canadian or support Canadian athletes, wear or buy your red mittens on this day.

World Hello Day: Say hello to 10 people for this day. The ultimate goal of this simple gesture is to promote world peace.

November 22:

National Cranberry Relish Day: This year this day falls on a most appropriate day: Thanksgiving! Because it’s just not Thanksgiving without cranberry relish. Not a fan of the stuff? Or just tired of your usual recipe? Try this odd sounding but apparently delicious recipe (we haven’t tried it yet, so we can’t say for sure).

National Day of Mourning: This annual march and rally honors the Native Americans who suffered and died at the hands of the settlers. It happens on the same day as Thanksgiving to highlight the full story of Thanksgiving’s history, which is much darker than the story that’s usually told.

Turkey-free Thanksgiving: Turkey may be the “traditional” protein for the Thanksgiving meal. But plenty of people prefer other options. So apparently this day gives vegetarians & others “permission” to celebrate without the gobbler. Not that anyone needs permission to create a meal they’ll love … If you’d like to try but aren’t sure what to make, consider one of these main dishes. Many are still meat-based, but there’s some veggie options too.

November 23:

Doctor Who Day: The very 1st episode of Dr. Who aired on this date in 1963. Celebrate by watching your favorite episodes of your favorite doctor!

Fur Free Friday: The fur industry does not treat its animals well, to put it mildly. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, pledge to never buy anything made from real animal fur. And spread the word about fur’s cruelty.

National Espresso Day: If you’re hitting the sales a shot or 2 (or 3 or 4 …) of espresso might help get you through the day! And even if you’re not, enjoy an espresso to jump-start your day.

November 24:

Small Business Saturday: Support small businesses during this annual shopping event! When small businesses in your community succeed the whole community is better off. American Express founded this day in 2010 to help small businesses around the country get more customers. And thrive!

National Sardines Day: If you love sardines this day is for you. If you don’t maybe you just haven’t found the right ones? They come packed in tomato or mustard sauce in addition to the usual oil or water. Or maybe you’d prefer to skip the cans & try smoked sardines. Or grill some fresh sardines. How you enjoy ‘em is all up to you!

Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day: Do you have a unique talent? Sure you do! We all do. Whatever yours is, embrace it today. Maybe even make it a party with family & friends where you each do whatever thing you do.

November 25:

International Hat Day: Hat lovers, this day is for you! Wear your favorite hat to celebrate. So what’ll it be? A beret? Sombrero? Baseball cap? Cowboy hat? Something else?

National Blasé Day: For this day you may be blasé (bored, indifferent, unimpressed) about absolutely everything … well, except hats & parfaits. But everything else? Yes! Or meh. Sure, be blasé. Or not. Whatever …

National Parfait Day: Enjoy a layered dessert in a glass to celebrate this day. Not sure what to create? Try one of these recipes.
