Celebration Ideas for October 28 -November 3, 2019

Late October & early November Celebrations
Celebration Ideas for October 28 -November 3, 2019

Are you ready for darkness to descend an hour earlier? It’ll be happening in just over a week as we say farewell to Daylight Savings Time and set our clocks back.

And of course daylight hours have been getting shorter for a while now. But it’s gotten more noticeable lately. But never fear! As we get into the coldest time of the year those daylight hours will lengthen again.

But until then we can’t let the cold & dark dampen our enjoyment. And as usual there’s plenty to enjoy. From chocolate and caramel apples to playing outside and origami. Plus lots more in between.

So keep reading to take a peek and plan your week. And remember to always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of October

You still have a few days left to celebrate things like Squirrel Awareness, Bat Appreciation, and chili. You might also like these two:

Right Brainers Rule! Month: Are you a “right brainer”, creative and free-wheeling? If so, October is all about you! If you haven’t already been celebrating (or even if you have), get extra-creative for these last few days of the month. And if you’re not a right brainer, try your hand at something creative anyway. Or celebrate your right brainer friends.

Spinach Lovers Month: If you’re a true spinach lover you’re probably already using spinach at every opportunity. But for the rest of October challenge yourself to find even more uses for this nutritious leaf. And if you’re not already a spinach lover, try adding a handful to your stir-fry, omelete, or even your smoothie! It has such a mild taste you probably won’t even notice it, but you’ll be getting tons more nutrients than without it.

Then come Friday, plan to jump into November celebrations like these.

National Peanut Butter Lovers Month: Peanuts & peanut butter are good for you! So move beyond the PB & J sandwiches and get creative cooking & baking with peanut butter for a whole month!

Historic Bridge Awareness Month: Are you fascinated with historic bridges? Or have you never realized that historic bridges are worthy of fascination? And preservation! Either way use this month to learn more about historic bridges, where you can find some, and why they’re worth saving. And if what you learn inspires you, maybe even take action!

Weekly Celebrations for Oct. 28 – Nov. 3

This week is a blend of serious, fun, and delicious. And possibly just a little frustrating, if you just can’t quite get the hang of paper folding …

Red Ribbon Week (October 23 – 31, 2019): Help spread the drug prevention message during the last 9 days of October. Find the drug-free pledge, a photo contest and more here. If you’re the creative type, you might also want to enter the contest to create next year’s theme.

World Origami Week (October 24 – November 11, 2019): Enjoy 2-1/2 weeks of paper-folding fun! If you already do origamai, keep it up! And maybe teach others. If you’ve never tried (or tried & gave up), this is the week(s) to learn.

National Fig Week (November 1 – 7, 2019): Eat figs! But don’t stick with making only cookies or desserts with them. Expand your fig repertoire with some of these recipes, including stuffed figs, fig spreads, and more. Of course, there’s also figgy desserts!

National Farm Toy Show: If you love farm toys and happen to be in or near Dyersville, Iowa, you can find a whole weekend of toys! There’s also an auction on Saturday. There’s even a toy farmer coloring station for the kids!

Celebration Days coming up for Oct. 28 thru Nov. 3

Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 3! Prepare to fall back at 2 am. And use your extra hour wisely (but not to get more stuff done).

But before that there’s plenty to get done. Like eating chocolate. Also oatmeal, calzones, and deviled eggs among other deliciousness.

On the serious side we learn about psoriasis and stroke, and we thank internists.

We also love on cats, spend some time being a hermit, and tell knock-knock jokes. Of course, many of us will also be handing out candy for Halloween and/or taking our kids trick-or-treating.

Yep, it’s looking like another full and fun-tastic week!

October 28:

National Chocolate Day: Celebrate all things chocolate for this day. So use chocolate sauce. Eat chocolate candy (and chocolate ice cream). Bake a chocolate cake. Or cupcakes. Or donuts. Dip strawberries (or any other fruits or berries) in chocolate. Just enjoy chocolate in all its glory all day.

National Internal Medicine Day: Celebrate the internal medicine physicians on this day.

St. Jude Day: Celebrate the feast day of the patron saint of lost causes and desperate situations.

October 29:

National Cat Day: Cats! We have another day to celebrate and love on cats! So go do that. Your cats. Your friends’ cats. Cats in shelters … especially cats in shelters! Because that’s part of the goal for this day: help shelter cats find their very own loving, furever homes. 💕

World Psoriasis Day: Psoriasis is more common than you may think. But most people know very little about it. Until they or someone they know gets it. Why not learn more about this condition for the day. Then help spread the word to support people suffering with it.

World Stroke Day: Learn more about stroke risks and how to recognize a stroke. Because strokes are the #1 cause of disability. But it doesn’t have to be that way, because most strokes are preventable.

National Hermit Day: On this day you have permission to be a hermit. At least for part of the day. So head to your favorite quiet spot and spend some time just enjoying your own company. And leave all your electronic devices behind. Bringing those would defeat the purpose!

National Oatmeal Day: Start your day with a warm, satisfying bowl of oatmeal to celebrate this day right. Then go on to get creative with oats for the rest of the day. Check out these ideas for ways to add more oats to your life, like adding them to smoothies or making a pie crust! It’s not strictly oatmeal, but who cares?

October 30

National Publicist Day: This day honors those people who work mostly behind the scenes helping companies, brands, and people promote themselves and communicate effectively. So thank your publicist today (if you have one). Or thank any publicists you know. If you are a publicist, give yourself a pat on the back for all your anonymous hard work.

Speak Up for Service Day: This day recognizes the importance of young people involved in community service. And the need to give these young people the recognition they deserve. So if you know young people active in your community (or other communities!), thank them for what they do and make sure others in their communities know of their service. And encourage any young people you know who aren’t already active in their communities to become so.

Haunted Refrigerator Night: On the evening of the day before Halloween we check to see what’s lurking in the back of the fridge. You know you’ve probably forgotten something back there. And it has turned into something very frightening indeed! This is another fun creation from Tom & Ruth Roy.

Checklists Day: Do you use checklists? They’re a great way to make sure you don’t forget something. From packing lists and daily routine checklists to a pilot’s pre-flight checklist, these simple little lists can help prevent disappointment and even disaster.

National Candy Corn Day: On this day we celebrate that weird little Halloween candy you either love or hate. If you’re in the love camp, go get yourself a bag and indulge. And share your love on social media. If you’re in the hate camp, you might want to vent about why on earth such nasty stuff has its own day. Either way, have a fun Candy Corn Day!

October 31:

National Knock-Knock Jokes Day: Forget Halloween. Scare everyone around you by telling terrible knock-knock jokes all day. Guaranteed to make them all run away from you!

Books for Treats Day: Instead of candy, hand out books for Halloween! Because let’s face it, the kids get plenty of candy. And they probably don’t like half of what they get. And their parents will only let them eat some of what they get. Plus the excitement wears off fast. But books excite the mind. And good books can do it over and over.

National Doorbell Day: On the day that your doorbell is likely to see a lot of use we celebrate this useful little invention.

National Caramel Apple Day: When was the last time you had a caramel apple? If it’s been a while, this is the day to change that. And since Halloween is the most popular time for caramel apples, the timing is absolutely perfect. Enjoy!

November 1:

Go Cook For Your Pets Day: Pets love (LOVE!) to share your fresh-cooked meals. So on this day you get to make your pets their very own fresh-cooked meals. And don’t they deserve it for all the love and joy they bring into our lives?

Extra Mile Day: On this day we celebrate those who “go the extra mile.” So why not go the extra mile in at least one endeavor for this day to make a positive difference in some way.

National Author’s Day: Celebrate the people who create the vivid worlds that transport you through a book’s pages right into that world. They’re authors, and they deserve this day. If your favorite author is still alive, why not send a note of thanks? This might also be a good day to buy your favorite author’s latest book (assuming you didn’t buy it the day it was released!). Of course, it’s also a great day to discover a new author!

World Vegan Day: This day kicks off World Vegan Month, a time for non-vegans to explore the vegan lifestyle. And for vegans to share their knowledge. You’re probably going to have to choose between celebrating this day or the next two …

National Calzone Day: Enjoy your favorite calzone for lunch or dinner … or both! Minsky’s Pizza created this day and has offered specials in the past. If there’s a Minsky’s near you, why not see if they’re doing so again this year? Or see what other nearby restaurants might be celebrating.

National Deep Fried Clams Day: On this day we batter up some clams & toss ‘em in some hot oil. The deliciousness that emerges from that oil is just spectacular. Go out for some deep fried clams or try this recipe.

November 2:

Play Outside Day: This celebration actually happens on the 1st Saturday of every month, all year long. But since colder weather makes many of us think more of hibernating than playing outside, this seems like a good time to share it & remind us all to get outside & play!

National Bison Day: This day honors the United States’ national mammal. The animal is a conservation success story, going from nearly wiped out of existence to living in all 50 states.

National Deviled Egg Day: On this day we must eat deviled eggs, even if there’s no party or potluck anywhere to be found. Although you could certainly throw a party in this yummy food’s honor! And you don’t have to stick with the classic version either. Check out this page for a classic recipe plus 2 variations.

Sausage and Kraut Day: After your deviled egg appetizer, dig in to a dish of sausage and sauerkraut! Use your favorite recipe or try this Sausage Potato & Sauerkraut Skillet.

November 3:

Zero -Tasking Day: This celebration is aimed at the extra hour we get when Daylight Savings Time ends. Use that hour to simply be instead of trying to cram extra doing into that hour.

National Sandwich Day: For this day at least one meal must be a sandwich. Make it as simple or as fancy as you’d like, just make it a sandwich! Maybe try one of these sandwich recipes. Or see if any restaurants near you are celebrating with free or reduced-price sandwiches.

Cliché Day: Tom & Ruth Roy invite us to use clichés as much as possible for this day. Why not see just how many people you can annoy with old, stale clichés?
