What to Celebrate Sept. 21 thru 27, 2020
Autumn is here! Well, in a couple of days if you’re reading this right after we post it.
We’re not sure what that really means this year. But we’re all for celebrating anything that feels the least bit predictable or normal right now. And the changing of the seasons is both predictable and normal.
So, welcome fall!
And of course there’s plenty more equally predictable, if less official, special days for your celebratory pleasure.
So go ahead! Take a peek and plan your week. And of course, remember to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate for the rest of September
Well these month-long celebrations aren’t exactly enjoyable. But they are important. By learning more about these diseases & conditions we can understand them better. And when we understand them better we can support people with them better. Which is definitely worth celebrating.
World Alzheimer’s Month: Help erase the stigma and misinformation surrounding dementia. Learn more about Alzheimer’s and dementia in general. Then help others understand, too.
Pain Awareness Month: We all experience pain at some time or other. For most of us, it’s a short-term pain that goes away with a pain reliever or a bit of time. For others the pain is chronic, which means it’s either always there or comes & goes on its own. Whatever kind of pain you have, it’s important to manage it. And when people you know are experiencing pain, take the time to understand how it’s affecting them & their lives.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Awareness Month: As many as 10% of women have PCOS, but many don’t realize it. This genetic condition can cause infertility and irregular periods. But it can also have serious and even life-threatening complications like cancer, liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. Learn more about PCOS and get checked out if you suspect you may have it.
Weekly Celebrations for 9/21 thru 9/27
This week we celebrate clean hands and clean indoor air. We also raise awareness of how much deaf dogs are worth the possible challenges. And we remind men they have a prostate!
International Clean Hands Week (September 20 – 26, 2020): Clean hands have always been important, but this year we got a reminder of just how important! Along with lots of lessons in how to do it right. How many of us were doing it wrong? As we head toward the season of increased respiratory illnesses, let’s use this week to remind ourselves not to get lazy about the handwashing. No matter how tired of it all we may be.
Prostate Cancer Awareness Week (September 20 – 26, 2020): If you’ve been spreading the word about prostate cancer awareness & the importance of getting tested for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month good for you! If you’ve been putting it off, then you have another chance for this week. Get tested. Remind the men in your life to get tested. Use your favorite social platforms to remind everyone you know. It’s that important!
National Deaf Dog Awareness Week (September 20 – 26, 2020): Just like people, dogs can be born deaf or go deaf for many reasons. Loving a deaf dog can be a challenge, but it’s one worth taking! If you have a deaf dog, you already know. Celebrate your deaf pooch for this week. Otherwise, learn about some of the myths about deaf dogs & how to live with one. Who knows, you might be inspired to give a deaf dog a home with you!
National Indoor Plant Week (September 21 – 25, 2020): Indoor plants not only bring the beauty of the outdoors into your home, they also help purify the air. And with all the time we’ve been spending at home these days, clean indoor air is more important than ever! Why not get yourself a new plant or two to celebrate the week? If you have pets, just be aware that some plants are poisonous to them.
Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 21 thru Sept. 27
Fall officially begins Tuesday. But before that we celebrate peace & elephants & chai & more.
Once fall gets here we keep celebrating! There’s punctuation, quesadillas, ghost hunting, and so much more to keep us full and entertained.
What are you waiting for? A fun-tastic week awaits!
September 21:
International Day of Peace: On this day we recognize our differences but commit to living peacefully with each other despite them. The theme for this year’s celebration is Shaping Peace Together. Which is appropriate, because the only way to achieve lasting peace is with everyone’s participation.
World Alzheimer’s Day: The entire month of September is all about raising awareness and defeating the stigma of Alzheimer’s (and dementia in general). But if you can only help defeat the misinformation for one day, make it this day.
National Chai Day: The sweet, spicy, creamy tea we know as chai is satisfying any day of the year. But the spices commonly used in this drink—cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg—just scream fall. So it’s quite appropriate to celebrate this drink just as fall is starting. (ok, a day early) Won’t you join us in a cup of chai?
National Pecan Cookie Day: Do pecan cookies go with chai? Of course they do! Pecan cookies go with just about anything. 😋 So make yourself a batch of pecan cookies (or 2!) and enjoy your sweet & spicy day.
September 22:
Elephant Appreciation Day: Do you appreciate elephants? Of course you do! They’re fascinating and deserving of our appreciation. Sadly human “appreciation” has too often taken the form of killing elephants for their ivory tusks. So now elephant populations are in trouble. Why not appreciate the elephants this year by taking whatever steps we each can to help protect them?
National Voter Registration Day: Every Voter Registration Day and election is important. But this year feels even bigger. If you’re not already registered, do that first. Once you’re registered help others get registered too.
National Centenarian’s Day: Celebrate old people! But not just any ol’ old people. Really old old people! The ones who have made it to at least 100 years. Because a century is a looooong time, and these people have seen & experienced a lot. So why not learn from their experiences? Talk to a centenarian if you can. They have a ton of fascinating stories to tell.
World Carfree Day: Let’s all find ways to get around without a car for the day. And beyond! Is your destination close enough to walk to? For longer distances a bicycle might be an option. Public transportation may feel unsafe right now, but many public transit departments are doing a good job with cleaning and avoiding crowding. If that’s true for your options, they should be no less safe than any other public locations. As a last resort carpooling would at least reduce the number of cars on the road.
National Online Recovery Day: Did you know substance abuse treatment and support is available online? It is! And more people need to know about this option. Because too many people are embarrassed to go to a therapist or a meeting. But with telehealth services you don’t have to. If you need help, explore your online options. If not, help spread the word about this brand new day and the availability of online recovery options.
National Ice Cream Cone Day: Summer may be over, and there may be a chill in the air, but there’s no wrong time for ice cream! So put your favorite ice cream in your favorite cone and enjoy. Even if you have to do it in front of a fire to stay warm! 😋 🍦
September 23:
Restless Legs Awareness Day: RLS is a rather confusing disease, and many people have never heard of it. And many who have don’t understand it. After all “restless legs” doesn’t sound all that terrible, does it? But it can be. Because it often keeps people from sleeping. And it’s not always only in the legs. Learn more about it for the day.
Innergize Day: For this day we focus on ourselves, with a whole day of relaxation & reflection to energize & renew ourselves.
Bisexuality Day: On this day we work on letting go of our prejudices about bisexuality, and support the bisexual community.
National Snack Stick Day: Do you snack during the day? Then make sure you grab plenty of snack sticks to celebrate this day the right way. Because no other snack is allowed! Only savory, meaty little sticks of meat (usually beef or pork) can satisfy your hunger on Snack Stick Day.
National Great American Pot Pie Day: On the day after fall begins we get cozy with an irresistible comfort food. These pies overflow with meat & veggies in a silky sauce, all barely contained in a flaky crust. And the aroma of a baking pot pie is just as comforting as the pie itself. So do make a pot pie with your favorite meat (or even all veggies) and have a cozy evening with your family.
September 24:
National Punctuation Day: On, this day … we celebrate punctuation? And may-be learn how to use it the right way. Lets try anyway! O’kay? 😁 😉
Remember Me Thursday: Help spread the word about how amazing adopted pets are and all the orphan pets waiting patiently for their turn to be adopted. We also honor the pets who didn’t make it out. And of course we give our adopted pets lots of extra love.
Familial Hypercholesterolemia Awareness Day: Learn about and raise awareness of familial hypercholesterolemia. This genetic condition causes high cholesterol, raising your risk for heart disease. Many people have never even heard of it, which is why we need this day.
Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving: Celebrate America’s oldest continuously celebrated Thanksgiving. Yes, really! The Schwenkfelders have given thanks every year since 1734. Sure the Pilgrims had their first Thanksgiving in 1621, but the annual November observance didn’t actually start until 1863. Learn how this celebration started & make yourself a Thanksgiving dinner.
National Cherries Jubilee Day: After your Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving have a simple but elegant dessert. It was created well after 1734, but don’t let that stop you! Try this Cherries Jubilee recipe.
September 25:
Save the Koala Day: Much like the elephants we celebrated on the 22nd, koala populations have been victims of human activity. And now they need a different kind of human activity to help protect and save them. Learn how for this day.
National One-Hit Wonder Day: Ahhh, the one-hit wonder. Those artists who topped the charts with songs we just couldn’t get enough of. But only once. Then they faded away into obscurity once again (at least as far as music goes). But the songs still make us want to sing along. And even dance! Songs like Green Tambourine (The Lemon Pipers, 1969), One Toke Over the Line (Brewer & Shipley, 1970), Video Killed the Radio Star (The Buggles, 1979), 867-5309/Jenny (Tommy Tutone, 1981), Puttin’ On the Ritz (Taco, 1983), and so many more. Which ones did you love? Give ’em a listen for the day!
National Psychotherapy Day: Help spread the word: There’s no shame in needing and getting therapy! If you feel you might need therapy, investigate your options. If you’ve had therapy, share your story. You might help someone take that leap to get help themselves! And either way, tell people about this day.
National Lobster Day: This day is more about recognizing the lobster industry and the people who work hard to bring you this delightful seafood. But of course, the best way to recognize and thank them is to eat what they produce. So enjoy lobster your favorite way to celebrate.
National Quesadilla Day: Who doesn’t love cheesy, crispy quesadillas? Nobody we can think of! You know how to celebrate, right? Make some quesadillas!
September 26:
International Rabbit Day: Rabbits! They’re popular pets in the home and unpopular pests in the garden. But like all living creatures they deserve humane treatment. And that’s what this day is about.
World Lung Day: Lung health is on our minds this year! Between a brand new respiratory illness and raging wildfires in the US’s western states there’s a lot of potential for lung damage. Learn more about lung health and lung diseases for the day. Consider taking (and sharing!) one of the World Lung Day pledges too.
National Situational Awareness Day: This day reminds us to be aware of our surroundings at all times. This makes it easier to recognize potentially dangerous situations in time to get out of danger. It also lets us react calmly to the unexpected, potentially avoiding escalation of a situation that wasn’t originally dangerous (like a kid carrying a realistic but completely safe toy gun). And the good news is situational awareness can be learned!
National Public Lands Day: On this day we get out into nature. Specifically our public lands. Many parks, preserves, and other public lands offer free admission for the day. Many also have volunteer opportunities for the day. This year many events will be virtual, although in-person events may also be held. Check to see what’s happening at public lands near you & plan a fun and/or productive day.
National Ghost Hunting Day: Do you believe in ghosts? Do you live in a haunted house? Or near a haunted graveyard? This is the day to get out there & be a part of the World’s Largest Ghost Hunt™. If you dare …
National Dumpling Day: Enjoy your favorite dumplings. An Asian food company started this day in 2015, so one of the many Asian dumpling types might be most appropriate for this celebration. But certainly not required! Check out this list of 25 different dumplings for some dumpling inspiration.
September 27:
Google’s Birthday: Celebrate everybody’s favorite search engine’s birthday! Or a random September date that someone at the company decided to call its birthday. How? Throw a party! Or maybe just Google something. Check out the birthday doodle, too.
World Tourism Day: Tourism in general has taken a hit this year. But it’s still an important—and sometimes critical—part of many regions’ economies. It can also help preserve the culture and heritage of areas that might otherwise be forgotten.
National Scarf Day: Scarves can be fashion accessories or ways to stay warm … or both! And it doesn’t matter why you’re wearing a scarf for this day as long as you’re wearing it! Don’t have a scarf? Or don’t have one you love? Get yourself a new scarf to celebrate the day. Maybe a scarf from Echo Designs, the founder of the day?
National Crush a Can Day: This silly-sounding day is actually quite serious. It’s all about raising awareness of the importance of recycling. Aluminum recycling in this case. So after you’ve crushed your fill of cans, bring them to your local recycling center or toss them in your recycling bin for pickup. And while you’re thinking about recycling, learn what other materials can be recycled and how to do it right.
National Chocolate Milk Day: Pour yourself a tall glass of chocolate milk to celebrate this day. Why? Because you can! And because chocolate in pretty much any form is delicious. Plus you can get chocolate’s antioxidants and milk’s calcium in one delightful & nostalgic glass of deliciosity.
National Corned Beef Hash Day: Make corned beef hash for your Sunday breakfast. Or lunch or dinner for that matter. Because corned beef hash is perfect any time of day.
