Celebration Ideas for September 10 – 16, 2018

September’s just chugging along.

We got a few days of cool weather (yay!) but the heat’s not quite done around here. We’ll get another 4 or 5 days of heat. We’re hoping the crisp fall weather will then settle in for a while!

How about you?

But no matter the weather, there’s always something to celebrate …

Animals & line dancing & milkshakes (chocolate!) & letting the kids cook. Plus serious topics like prostate cancer, puppy mills, and remembering September 11, 2001.

And so much more.

So as usual, please take a peek and plan your week. And always remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All September Long

During September we protect and remember animals. We also remember the importance of cancer screenings & learn how to avoid head lice.

Save the Koala Month: Help the Australian Koala Foundation save the koala. They are currently on the IUCN Red List as vulnerable. Let’s not wait until they become endangered to help!

National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: Remind the men in your life of the importance of prostate cancer screening.

World Animal Remembrance Month: Remember all the animals who have passed on, however they lived & however they died. Whether they were much loved or abandoned or afraid. They all deserve remembrance.

National Head Lice Prevention Month: With kids heading back to school, it’s also time to think about head lice. Learn how to prevent & manage them so you don’t have to worry about a note from school. Or your child getting sent home for having lice.

Weekly Celebrations for September 10 – 16

This week we have a couple of serious topics and a couple of fun ones.

National Suicide Prevention Week (Sept. 9 – 15): Learn the warning signs of suicide. Don’t be afraid to talk about it, and help spread awareness. You might just save a life.

International Housekeepers Week (Sept. 9 – 15): Celebrate the custodial staff for this week! They operate mostly behind the scenes in office buildings, hotels, & more. You probably rarely think about them … except maybe the one time your trash doesn’t get emptied. But they’re just as important to keeping a business running smoothly as any other team member. Here are a few simple ideas for celebrating the housekeeping staff in your organization.

National Line Dance Week (Sept. 10 – 15): Time for some line dancing! Learn a new line dance or two during this week. This blog post from 2013 links to a few teaching videos you might like.

HummerBird Celebration (Sept. 13 – 16): If you happen to be in/near Rockport-Fulton, Texas and love nature & birds check out this 4-day event. There’s vendors & speakers & field trips & just plain fun. Many events require tickets, with prices ranging from $5 to $70.

Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 10 thru Sept. 16

The 2nd full week in September is a serious one as we talk about suicide and remember the horrors of 9/11.

But it’s not all sad. Nor should it be. We can remember sadness and try to prevent more sadness while also enjoying each day.

So we also celebrate creativity. On 2 days, even! And also encouragement.

There’s always something delicious to celebrate too. Like chocolate & hoagies. Cheese toast & donuts. Plus more!

And if you have a wife be warned: You’d best be making plans to appreciate her at the end of the week! :D

How will you make your week a fun-tastic one?

September 10:

National Boss/Employee Exchange Day: So apparently on the Monday after Labor Day you and your boss (or employee, depending on who you are) are supposed to switch places. This will supposedly let you gain a better understanding of each other’s jobs. We think this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen in all but a few cases. But if you’d like to try it, here are some tips to help the day go smoothly (or at least smoother).

World Suicide Prevention Day: This day focuses on how to support people thinking about suicide, those who have survived an attempt, and those who have lost a loved one to suicide. The International Association for Suicide Prevention offers a variety of suggested activities to mark the day. The list includes ideas for everyone from”regular” people to mental health professionals and media companies.

Swap Ideas Day: This might be better (and easier!) than swapping jobs. It’s as simple as sharing ideas, opinions, thoughts. The key here is “share.” So listen with an open mind, even if some of the ideas are vastly different from your own … on second thought, this might not be any easier than swapping jobs …

September 11:

Libraries Remember Day: This remembrance of 9/11 began at the Bensenville Library in Illinois. The library held events for at least 10 years and invited other libraries across the country to do the same. It doesn’t seem to have done much in recent years, and of course there are other remembrance celebrations. But we’d like to see libraries get more involved again, since libraries are the one place where history is always available and remembered.

Patriot Day: Another remembrance of September 11, 2001. A Joint Resolution passed in December 2001 called on the President to issue a proclamation each year designating the day. This is different from Patriots Day, which is in April and commemorates the Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord.

National Make Your Bed Day: Apparently making your bed can help you have a better night’s sleep. Seems like it should be worth a try. And it’s pretty simple to do! Although it looks like it’s not actually the only thing you should be doing …

September 12:

National Day of Encouragement: This is a day to be positive & uplifting with those around you. The day started in 2007 with a group of teenagers at the Encouragement Foundation at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. They felt the biggest problem facing teens was a lack of encouragement. President George W. Bush even signed a declaration for the day.

National Chocolate Milkshake Day: Milkshakes weren’t always the whipped ice cream & syrup concoctions we know today. At one time they included eggs & whiskey! But for this day you get to indulge in a creamy, chocolaty shake without worrying about calories. Try this extra-chocolaty shake recipe. Enjoy!

National Video Games Day: Play video games on this day! The day apparently started back in 1991 (at least according to this research). So if you have an old game system that still works, this would be the perfect day to dig it out & play. But there’s nothing wrong with playing something newer, either.

September 13:

International Chocolate Day: Make it a lusciously chocolaty day! Start the day with chocolate croissants. Have chocolate fudge or chocolate chip cupcakes for a mid-morning snack. Move on to chocolate truffles after lunch and a fudge-almond tart for your evening dessert. And don’t forget a chocolate martini to end your day! Does it get more heavenly? (No. No it does not).

National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day: On this day the kids do the cooking. Parents can help if the kids are just learning, but the kids take the lead. They can even share their creations on the Young Chefs Academy Facebook page.

National Peanut Day: Eat & cook with peanuts & peanut butter to celebrate this day. Consider having the kids create something with peanuts to celebrate 2 days at the same time. And chocolate for a 3-fer!

September 14:

Eat a Hoagie Day: Surely you know how to celebrate this day? Make or buy yourself a long roll stuffed with meats & veggies & cheeses and dressed however you prefer. Then devour it. Although the name implies one hoagie for the day, we’re pretty sure one for lunch and another for dinner wouldn’t be out of line! ;)

National Creme Filled Donut Day: Celebrate with a creme-filled (or kreme-filled, depending on who you ask!) donut or 2 for this day. See if your favorite donut sellers are celebrating with any special deals. Or try making your own. This recipe looks simple and delicious.

National Live Creative Day: This day invites you to forget about rules & let your creativity flow. It’s a relatively new day, created in 2016 by Creative Promotional Products.

September 15:

Felt Hat Day: Get out your best felt hat to wear for this day! Assuming you have a felt hat? No, you can’t substitute a baseball cap! Unless it’s made of felt … but that would be weird (wouldn’t it?).

International Dot Day: Another day dedicated to creativity! Also courage and collaboration. The day was inspired by The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds.

National Cheese Toast Day: Mmmmm … toasty cheese on thick slices of bread. What could be better? This particular cheesy day celebrates specifically the cheese toast created & still served by Sizzler. So stop in to your nearest Sizzler for some cheese toast to celebrate. Or, if you don’t have one nearby, start planning to move so you can celebrate right next year. Ok, maybe just try your hand at making some yourself. ;)

September 16:

National Guacamole Day: There’s never a wrong time for guacamole! But there is a wrong time to skip the guacamole, and National Guacamole Day is that time. So whip up a batch of this creamy delight & enjoy!

Wife Appreciation Day: For this day anyone with a wife must show her appreciation all day. If she happens to love guacamole, consider making her some & celebrating National Guacamole Day with her. Plan a few other things too, just in case guacamole isn’t quite enough appreciation … ;)

National Puppy Mill Awareness Day: Help bring awareness to the cruelty of puppy mills and the need to finally end them. Or learn more about them yourself. Many animal welfare advocates & organizations hold events for the day, so consider joining one. Like this march in Chicago. The Puppy Mill Project’s founder also started the National Puppy Mill Project, which created this day.
