What to Celebrate September 24 to 30 2018
The final week of September is upon us.
And while we welcome the cooler weather the week is forecast to bring us around here, our hearts ache for those affected by the violent weather elsewhere. The hurricane here in the US and the typhoon in the Philippines and China. We hope our readers are all safe.
We also encourage everyone to find something to celebrate each day. Something big or something small. Your loved ones’ safety. The dawn of a new day. Anything that makes you feel happy or motivated or lucky to be alive. Celebrate it.
Life’s too short and unpredictable for anything less.
And of course, if you’re so inclined, consider taking a peek and planning your week around one or more of the special days we’ve collected here.
Just always remember to …
Enjoy.
Celebrate for the rest of September
There’s still time this month to help save the tigers and start learning to sew. Also to get an all-access pass to your local library … where you can learn more about tigers & sewing!
Save a Tiger Month: There are only a few thousand of these big cats left in the wild. Here are 5 tiger facts in honor of the month.
National Library Card Sign-up Month: If you and/or your children don’t have library cards, September is the month to fix that! But if you don’t sign up before the end of the month, don’t let that stop you. Your local library is happy to get you a card any day of the year (that it’s open!).
National Sewing Month: Love to sew? This is the month to start a new project. Or make the time to finish one that’s been hanging around a while. Maybe you’d like to learn to sew or to sew better? There are trained instructors who can help you!
Weekly Celebrations for September 24 – 30
For the last week in September we celebrate dogs in general and deaf dogs in particular. We also spread the word about sea otter conservation and preserving the right to read & write the books you want.
Sea Otter Awareness Week (September 23 – 29): Did you know sea otters are an important part of their ecosystem? Unfortunately their populations are declining. :( The point of this week is to spread the word about sea otter conservation efforts and needs.
Deaf Dog Awareness Week (September 23 – 29): This week is dedicated to celebrating & understanding deaf dogs. It actually kicks of on Saturday, Sept. 22 with Deaf Dogs Rock Day.
National Dog Week (September 23 – 29): This week celebrates dogs and promotes responsible dog ownership (which the whole month of September also promotes). World War I veteran and dog advocate Captain William Judy created the week back in 1928.
Banned Books Week (September 23 – 29): This week celebrates the freedom to find and read the information you want and for others to write and publish the ideas they want to express. It was created in 1982, after too many books made it onto banned lists (or proposed bans).
Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 24 thru Sept. 30
We’re getting close to the season of gathering with friends and family to eat way too much yummy food. But you don’t have to wait to find deliciousness in your days. This week we drink coffee & mulled cider, munch on biscotti and savor corned beef hash among other things.
On the serious side we encourage everyone to register to vote, shine a light on orphan pets, and promote the right to access useful websites, including in schools and libraries.
And of course there’s a bit of fun, with one-hit wonders, ghost hunting, and more.
So let’s make it another fun-tastic week!
September 24:
National Punctuation Day: This is the day you have permission to point out punctuation abuse wherever you find it. Just make sure you take criticism as well as you give it … ‘cause none of us is perfect!
National Cherries Jubilee Day: Enjoy a dish of this flambé dessert, originally created for one of Queen Victoria’s jubilee celebrations. Why does America celebrate a dessert created to honor a British Queen? Who cares, it’s delicious! Need a recipe? Try this one. If you’d prefer not to light the alcohol, give this recipe a try.
Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving: After a group of followers of Caspar Schwenkfeld arrived in Pennsylvania in 1734 they held a day of thanksgiving to God for escaping persecution.
September 25:
National Voter Registration Day: If you’re not yet registered to vote, this is the day to do it! Yes, your one vote does matter. And encourage family and friends to do the same. If there are any awareness/registration events near you, see if they still need volunteers. Then volunteer!
National One Hit Wonder Day: Celebrate your favorite one-hit wonders! So, which one is it? Come on Eileen (Dexys Midnight Runners)? Mickey (Toni Basil)? I’m Too Sexy (Right Said Fred)? Who Let the Dogs Out? (Baha Men)? Something else?
National Tune-up Day: HomeServe USA created this day to remind you that you can save money and energy with a heating system tune-up. If you haven’t had your system checked recently, schedule that appointment!
September 26:
Banned Websites Awareness Day: This day highlights how schools and libraries often go too far in blocking access to certain websites. Yes, there are legitimate reasons to block some sites. But often useful and educational sites get caught up in the filters.
National Dumpling Day: Mmmmm … Pillowy pockets of goodness! And we get to eat them all day. Which we can do, because there’s a nearly infinite number of ways to make ‘em!
National Pancake Day: If you must you may have pancakes for breakfast instead of dumplings. Or any other meal. Because much like dumplings pancakes are amazing any time of day. And yes, we believe crêpes may be considered a type of pancake for this day (although some may disagree … they’d be wrong! ;) ).
September 27:
Google’s Birthday: Do you love Google? Then you’ll definitely want to celebrate its birthday! Hate Google? Well, at least check out the doodle … they’re usually pretty fun. All of this assumes Google itself decides to celebrate its birthday on this day. It’s been doing so for some years now, but for a while the date kept moving around. And we all know how the company likes to keep us on our toes!
Remember Me Thursday: This global awareness campaign raises awareness of all the orphan pets waiting for their furever homes and highlights the importance of adoption for these animals.
National Corned Beef Hash Day: More deliciousness for breakfast or any time of day. Buy the canned stuff if you must, but it’s pretty simple to make yourself. So if you have just a little extra time try this recipe.
September 28:
Save the Koala Day: If you haven’t been celebrating Save the Koala Month, here’s your chance to redeem yourself. Be koala-focused for just one day. Koalas are adorable & need our help, mostly because we’ve taken away their food and their homes. But there’s still time to save them.
World Rabies Day: Help spread the word that rabies is still a real threat in many parts of the world. Not so much in the US, where you probably only think about rabies when you get your pets vaccinated or hear about a rabid bat found nearby. But tens of thousands of people die from it every year in less developed places.
Ask a Stupid Question Day: Technically this is a school-oriented day, created by teachers to get kids to speak up & ask questions in class. But why can’t the rest of us celebrate? We’ve all heard “There’s no such thing as a stupid question” at least once in our lives (haven’t we?). But we probably don’t believe it. So for just this one day, try to believe it and ask that question you’re afraid might actually be the one stupid question in the world (it’s not!).
September 29:
International Coffee Day: This is a day to celebrate & savor your coffee. Don’t just gulp it down to stay awake. Slow down and actually taste it. Maybe even cook with it?
National Ghost Hunting Day: Kick off the Halloween season with the “World’s Largest Ghost Hunt.” Try to collect evidence of paranormal activity, or just visit one or more haunted locations. And try not to get too spooked …
National Biscotti Day: It does seem appropriate to celebrate coffee & biscotti together on the same day. These 2 delights are the perfect pair! I wonder if ghosts would be tempted by biscotti?
September 30:
International Blasphemy Rights Day: This day promotes the right to freedom of expression and belief (especially religious belief) around the world. Those of us in the US already enjoy this freedom (despite those who occasionally try to suppress it), but it is sorely lacking in many other parts of the world. The date, September 30, is the anniversary of the publication of cartoons of Muhammad in a Danish newspaper which eventually led to violent protests.
National Hot Mulled Cider Day: Welcome the cooler fall weather (we hope!) with a mug of hot mulled cider. As a bonus, if you make it yourself your house will smell amazing! Try this recipe.
National Chewing Gum Day: Pop a piece of your favorite gum in your mouth & chew away! Is chewing gum a regular part of your day?
