What to Celebrate September 30 to October 6, 2019
The season of everything spooky and pumpkin spice is officially upon us!
(According to many retailers the yuletide season is also upon us. But we’ll be ignoring that for now!).
Luckily for you, if you’re not into either of those things you can find plenty else to celebrate. Like dogs … shelter dogs, black dogs, and fire pups!
Tacos, vodka, & pumpkin seeds (not spice!), too. Plus much more.
So jump right in to take a peek & plan your week.
And as always remember to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate All October Long
October honors animals of all kinds. So adopt yourself a shelter dog (maybe even a pittie). Appreciate the bats. And make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep your pets safe.
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: If a new canine family member is in your future, celebrate this month by heading to a local shelter & adopting. If you can’t add a dog to your home right now, you might still like to volunteer or donate to help shelter dogs get the care they need until they can find their forever homes.
National Pit Bull Awareness Month: We’re pretty sure you’re aware of pit bulls. But this month asks you to learn the truth about these dogs. They’re no more dangerous than any other big dog. If you agree, maybe celebrate this month and Adopt a Shelter Dog Month by giving a shelter pit bull a loving home. Because pitties often spend more time than others at shelters (and many never get out).
Bat Appreciation Month: If you’re batty for bats, this month is for you! And if you’re not, this is the month to learn why you should be. Because bats are quite useful and terribly misunderstood.
National Animal Safety and Protection Month: Do you know the best ways to keep your pet happy, healthy, and safe? Why not take some time this month to make sure.
Weekly Celebrations for 9/30 – 10/06
We didn’t find too many weekly celebrations for this week. But it’s still looking like the perfect week. After all, what more do you need than walks with your dog and beer? (Of course, you’ll need to get to Denver to celebrate beer properly).
National Walk Your Dog Week (October 1 – 7, 2019): Hopefully you walk your dog more than just this one week a year! Because the point of the week is really to highlight the importance of exercise for your dog (and for you too!). So grab that leash & head out for some healthy bonding time with your pooch.
Denver Beer Week (September 27 – October 5, 2019): It’s more than a week of beer events in Denver. If you love beer, Denver looks like the place to be for this week! And as the week winds down the fun ramps up, with the Great American Beer Festival starting on the 3rd. It looks like there’s still festival tickets available for Thursday & Saturday.
Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 30 thru Oct. 6
Celebrate the end of September with mulled cider, stupid questions, and love.
Then jump into October with fruits, vegetables, … and homemade cookies!
And keep the celebrations going by thanking a techie, doing something nice, and smiling. Fuel all these positive vibes with cinnamon buns, pumpkin seeds, and noodles.
How will you spend your fun-tastic week?
September 30:
National Chewing Gum Day: On this day we pop pieces of chewing gum in our mouths & chew away! If your boss or teacher objects, just say you’re celebrating an honest-to-goodness holiday. It’s your right! Although if your choice of chewing gum happens to be bubble gum, you might want to avoid blowing bubbles in any important meetings …
National Hot Mulled Cider Day: Mmmm … a mug of warm, spiced cider is the perfect drink for a crisp fall day. So hopefully the weather will cooperate for you to celebrate. Try this mulled cider recipe (with or without rum).
National Love People Day: For this day we show everyone love … unconditionally. Yes, everyone. People you live with. People you work with. Random people you meet on the street, in the store, or anywhere! Treat them all with love & kindness.
National Ask a Stupid Question Day: On this day we can ask all the questions we’ve been afraid to ask because we thought they were stupid. Because despite the often-repeated claim that “There are no stupid questions”, we’re pretty sure that’s a lie. But for this one day, it doesn’t matter. So ask away!
October 1:
National Homemade Cookie Day: On this day you must make & eat homemade cookies! Or at least eat them … you’re probably allowed to make them ahead of time. Or even better, get someone else to make them & bring them to you … preferably fresh out of the oven. 😊
National Black Dog Day: For some reason black animals tend to be less adoptable than other animals at shelters. But that’s crazy! This day reminds us that black dogs are just as loving and deserving of their own families as any other color dog. So if you’re thinking of adding a new dog to your family, make sure you check out the black ones too. (And you are adopting from a shelter, not buying from a store … right?).
National Fire Pup Day: Honor the dogs that work in firehouses. These days they’re mostly mascots, but they originally had important jobs. Back when horses pulled fire engines the dogs would run with the horses to help clear the way. And while search and rescue dogs may not be technically fire pups, they do help firefighters & first responders find people trapped by fires.
National Fruit at Work Day: You’re going to want to eat healthy if you’re going to indulge in Homemade Cookie Day. So this celebration is perfect! Bring fruit to work to snack on during the day. Then those homemade cookies can be your evening dessert.
World Vegetarian Day: This day kicks off Vegetarian Awareness Month. So pledge to go vegetarian for at least this day. And then try to do the whole month! Or at least regularly throughout the month. Even every other day or every third day? You might be surprised at how much you like vegetarian meals.
October 2:
World Day for Farmed Animals: Also called World Farm Animal Day, this day is about stopping the abuse of animals on factory farms. The creators of the day advocate going vegan so no animals have to suffer for our food choices. So the day is a good fit for Vegetarian Awareness Month.
National Coffee with a Cop Day: This day is about bringing community members and police officers together to have real conversations about the things affecting the community. It’s literally sit-down meetings at local restaurants/coffee shops. The idea started in Hawthorne, CA in 2011 & went national in 2016.
Walk to School Day: Put on your walking shoes & get some exercise for this day! The day has 2 goals: Health and Safety. Walking is great exercise for everybody, no matter your age (or status as a student!). And kids can get their walking in going to & from school … but only if they have safe routes between home & school. Of course, safe walking (and biking!) routes benefit the whole community, too.
National Pumpkin Seed Day: For this day you must snack on pumpkin seeds. And since pumpkin seeds are filled with good vitamins, minerals, and fiber you won’t have to feel guilty at all! They make amazing salad toppings too.
October 3:
Virus Appreciation Day: Every year when this day comes around we have to ask “Why?!”. But viruses are kinda fascinating, so why not learn a bit more about them for the day? Biological or computer or both … it’s your choice.
National Boyfriend Day: If you have an awesome boyfriend, this is the day to give him some extra attention & thanks. Because let’s face it, often life gets in the way & we forget to make sure our significant others really know how we feel. And if you don’t have a boyfriend (but you want one), don’t let this day make you feel sad. Having no boyfriend is much better than having a bad one.
National Techies Day: On this day we thank all the people who keep the world of technology moving forward. And we encourage students to keep entering tech fields (which was the original purpose of the day). Because the need for tech workers is just going to keep growing.
October 4:
World Animal Day: The world’s animals need us to care about their survival. And this day is another chance for us to show just how much we do care. So pick an animal-related cause & do something to support it. Something big or something small, it doesn’t matter. Every little bit (and voice) helps, even just spreading the word about the day.
World Smile Day: Make at least one person smile for this day. It helps if you also smile, but the goal of the day is to spread smiles to others. 😊
Kanelbullens Dag (Cinnamon Bun Day): This Swedish holiday began as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Hembakningsradet (Home Baking Council) and as a way to promote more home baking (especially of cinnamon buns!). Today it’s mostly just about the delightfully sweet, cinnamony rolls. But don’t worry if you’re not Swedish … make & eat cinnamon rolls anyway.
National Taco Day: It may not be Tuesday, but it is Taco Day! So have tacos all day to celebrate. No, breakfast tacos aren’t exactly traditional, but they’re perfectly acceptable. Then maybe have fish tacos for lunch & pork tacos for dinner. Or whatever you prefer. Just make sure you leave room for those cinnamon buns!
National Vodka Day: Vodka doesn’t exactly “go” with tacos or cinnamon buns (or does it?), but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate with a vodka cocktail or shot.
October 5:
Frugal Fun Day: This day is all about having fun without spending a lot of money. And it’s really not that hard with a little creativity! There’s a good chance you can even manage to find things to do for free.
National Do Something Nice Day: On this day we try to do at least one nice thing for someone else. And guess what? That one nice thing will make you both feel good! It doesn’t have to be anything big either. Even just a complement to someone doing a good job counts.
National Apple Betty Day: Make & eat Apple Betty (you might call it Apple Brown Betty) to celebrate this day. You deserve it after doing something nice. I wonder if sharing your Apple Betty would count as something nice. Or making it with someone could even count as frugal fun! As long as you both consider baking fun. Why not try this recipe to celebrate. Or this one, which uses bread instead of flour.
October 6:
National Mad Hatter Day: On this day we all act silly, just like Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter! Start with wearing a silly top hat (or any other silly hat). Then maybe spout random nonsense throughout the day. How to you like to be silly?
National Noodle Day: Eat your favorite noodle dish to celebrate this yummy day. Maybe see if any restaurants near you are having noodle specials for the day.
National Orange Wine Day: Orange wine?! What the heck? No, it’s not artificially colored or flavored. Instead winemakers treat white wine grapes more like red wine grapes during fermentation. And the extra skin contact causes the orange color. This is only the 2nd year for this celebration, so spread the word! And of course, enjoy an orange wine.
Pickle Day: If you’re a pickle lover & you can make it to New York’s Lower East Side neighborhood for this annual festival, you won’t be disappointed! If you can’t, well celebrate in spirit by snacking on some pickles. Or use pickles as an ingredient in at least one meal for the day.
