What to Celebrate September 6 thru 12, 2021
Welcome to Labor Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer! Luckily the fun doesn’t have to end just because the weekend (or summer) does.
So before you get the holiday weekend festivities started, jump in to take a peek and plan your week. And as always, remember to …
Enjoy!
Celebrate All September Long
Learn about prostate cancer, how to save the world’s tigers, and all the benefits of honey. Did you know a library card gives you access to resources that can help you do these things?
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: Anyone with a prostate should start getting annual screenings at least by age 50 (earlier if you have a family history). Take some time this month to learn about prostate cancer, screenings, and treatment options.
National Honey Month: Find new ways to use that sweet, sticky, delicious goo we call honey. Cook with it. Bake with it. Smear it on your skin. The potential uses are nearly endless! (ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but this stuff is truly amazing).
Library Card Sign-Up Month: The library is an amazing resource you’ll want to take advantage of! Remember, it’s not just books you can access with a library card. You get tons of multi-media resources and access to online resources you might otherwise have to pay for. And all you need is one little card.
National Save a Tiger Month: Help conservationists protect the tigers. These big cats are listed as endangered, and their population numbers are still dropping. There has been some good news recently: A few tiger populations have increased! But while that’s reason for hope, we’re far from announcing success. There’s still a lot of work to do before tigers can be considered safe from extinction.
Weekly Celebrations for Sept. 6 to 12
What do waffles, arts in education, and payroll have in common? Well, your paycheck helps pay for those waffles and the toppings, while state payroll taxes help fund education (in many states, anyway).
National Waffle Week (September 5 – 11, 2021): Enjoy waffles whenever you can. And wherever you can. Get creative with toppings. Try different waffle recipes. See if Waffle House (the week’s founder) or any other waffle restaurants near you are offering deals for the week.
National Arts in Education Week (September 12 – 18, 2021): Learn how arts in schools benefits all areas of learning, and advocate for keeping the budget for arts intact.
National Payroll Week (September 6 – 10, 2021): Celebrate the payroll professionals who make sure America’s employees get their paychecks on schedule. And learn more about the payroll system and payroll-related benefits, all of which affect your paycheck!
Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 6 thru Sept. 12
This week we read, race bathtubs, and remember freedom. We also appreciate our dog walkers, the weirdos in our lives, and our pets.
Of course we enjoy good food and drink as we celebrate out way through another fun-tastic week.
September 6:
Fight Procrastination Day: Are you a procrastinator? Most of us are at least some of the time. But for this day we must not procrastinate about anything! Just dive right in and get it done. Who knows, you might like the feeling of accomplishment so much you’ll keep it up. But first you have to start. Hop to it!
National Read a Book Day: If you’re looking for a quiet Labor Day this year this is the one you’re going to want to celebrate!
Yard Art Day: Turn your yard (or balcony/window/car/etc) into an art display! Register your display to participate formally. Or just do it for yourself because it’s fun!
Great Bathtub Race: The “official” Bathtub Race happens in Nome, Alaska every Labor Day. But if you can find a few just-crazy-enough people in your community, consider staging your own! (Note: This is not the same as the Bathtub Race in Nanaimo, British Columbia. That one’s on water!)
National Coffee Ice Cream Day: Ice cream is the perfect treat no matter how you’ve spent your day. So whether you won (or lost) a bathtub race, displayed your art, fought procrastination, or read a book, you deserve a bowl (or cone) of coffee ice cream.
September 7:
National Salami Day: Eat salami. ‘Nuf said.
National Neither Snow Nor Rain Day: Celebrate the anniversary of New York’s main post office opening, Sept. 7, 1914. That building had the Post Office’s unofficial motto inscribed on it: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Maybe celebrate by reminding the Postmaster General of that motto & suggesting the Post Office uphold that standard once again?
Google Commemoration Day: Google officially opened for business on this day in 1998. So it’s a birthday of sorts for the popular search engine. But we don’t call it Google’s birthday. Because we celebrate its birthday on Sept. 27. So we call it a commemoration day instead, apparently. We think Google just wants as many celebrations of itself as possible. 😉
National Beer Lover’s Day: If you love beer pour yourself a mug of your favorite beer to celebrate surviving the first work-day after Labor Day.
National Acorn Squash Day: Roast an acorn squash. Stuff it with meat, rice, and/or fruit. Or coat the cavity with butter & sprinkle with brown sugar (and cinnamon & nutmeg, if you’d like) for a sweet treat.
September 8:
National Ampersand Day: Use the ampersand (ampers&) wherever & whenever you can to celebrate this day! It’s quite useful, & decorative too. Not to mention fun & friendly.
International Literacy Day: Literacy is the foundation of a civil society. Making sure everyone has access to solid educational opportunities is the best way to ensure a bright future for us all.
National Dog Walker Appreciation Day: Thank your dog walkers! They make sure your favorite pooches get attention and walks when you can’t do it yourself.
World Orienteering Day: We get two Orienteering Days for 2021! This is the second one. The day aims to introduce young people to orienteering, hopefully sparking a lifetime of adventure. If you’re not familiar with orienteering, learn a bit about it here.
September 9:
National Teddy Bear Day: Love your Teddy Bear. That is all.
Wonderful Weirdos Day: No doubt there are people out there who consider loving Teddy Bears to be weird if you happen to be above a certain age. Those are not our kind of people. The Teddy Bear lovers are our kind of wonderful weirdos. This wonderfully weird day comes from the wonderfully weird minds of Tom & Ruth Roy.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day: Learn about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and related disorders. Help spread the word that drinking alcohol while pregnant is a risk to your baby’s health that’s just not worth taking.
National Wiener Schnitzel Day: Make it German night and enjoy a Wiener Schnitzel for dinner. Traditionally they’re breaded veal patties, but these days (at least in the US) pork and chicken schnitzel is quite common (and possibly easier to find than veal).
September 10:
National Swap Ideas Day: Don’t keep all those fabulous ideas to yourself! Collaborate with others to combine ideas and/or spark new, even better ideas.
National TV Dinner Day: Celebrate the creation that revolutionized the convenience food industry: the TV dinner! Swanson & Sons introduced it to the world in 1953. These prepackaged, heat & eat meals haven’t actually been called TV Dinners in decades. But the name remains synonymous with quick, usually frozen, meals from the grocery store.
World Suicide Prevention Day: Help raise awareness of suicide; it’s more common than you may realize. And help reduce the stigma around mental health and getting help for mental health issues. Many suicides are preventable, but the person needs to be willing to talk about it. You can help.
September 11:
Libraries Remember Day: See if your local library is having any events to commemorate September 11, 2001.
National Iguana Awareness Day: Do you have a pet iguana? Or maybe you want one? Either way, make sure you know the right way to care for this reptile. Many people discover they’ve bitten off more than they can chew when their pet gets huge. And strong. And many vets don’t treat reptiles. So spend some time on this day learning about these fascinating—but not easy—pets.
Responsible Dog Ownership Day: The official event is at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, North Carolina. But pet-related organizations near you may also be hosting events that might interest you. Check the dates, though. Most are held near, but not necessarily on, the same date as the flagship event.
Remember Freedom Day: It’s been said that freedom is not free. And we find constant reminders of this truth. Whichever other September 11 commemoration events you choose to celebrate, make this a companion celebration. It’s simple; just remember freedom.
National Make Your Bed Day: Do you regularly make your bed? Then you’ve got this one covered! (no pun intended 😁) If you don’t, well this is the day to make it. No, you don’t need to make hospital corners; just make it look neat. You might even find it’s much nicer to climb into a neat bed after a long day instead of having to unrumple your sheets & covers.
National Hot Cross Bun Day: These rolls are traditional during Lent, but they’re tasty any day of the year. And according to some superstitions having at least one bun on hand may protect you during a sea voyage or protect your home from fire. So bake yourself a batch of hot cross buns, and enjoy all but one. Then hang that last one in your kitchen for luck. 🙃
September 12:
National Pet Memorial Day: Remember the pets who have enriched your life for this day.
National Hug Your Hound Day: As you remember past pets, remember also to make the most of every moment with your current pets. So give your hound an extra hug or two (or ten!) to celebrate this day.
Pet Rock Festival: Despite the name, this one-day festival is all about the animals. The event takes place in North Grafton, MA and benefits area animal-welfare organizations. If you’re nearby, stop by for live music, good food, contests, and a great cause! If you can’t make it, consider donating to your favorite animal charity to celebrate in spirit.
National Day of Encouragement: The founders of this day want to remind us all that encouragement matters. So celebrate this day by being as encouraging toward others as possible. Even a few, small words of encouragement can make all the difference to someone wondering whether to keep trying or give up.
National Chocolate Milkshake Day: Who doesn’t love a chocolate milkshake? But when’s the last time you had one? You do know they’re not just for kids?! But if you still feel like you need an excuse to indulge, well here it is!
