It’s that time again! Time to decide how to spend the upcoming week.

If you already have plans, that’s awesome! If not then take a peek at what we’ve found and plan your week.

And however you fill your days, remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All September Long

September brings us reminders to protect our (or our loved ones’) health and our memories. And some foods to enjoy while doing it.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: During September we remind the men in our lives to make sure they’re getting regular screenings for prostate cancer. Because this cancer is usually very treatable when diagnosed early.

National Honey Month: Get creative with honey for the whole month of September. It’s good for more than just cooking and baking, too! Also learn more about the hard-working little honey bees who make this wondrous, sticky stuff.

National Chicken Month: Eat more chicken! That’s what this month is about. And why not combine Chicken Month and Honey Month by using honey in some of your marinades, glazes, or sauces for that chicken. Delightful!

Save Your Photos Month: We’re taking more photos than ever! And that’s a wonderful thing. But are you making sure that your most precious memories are safe? It’s too easy to lose them to flood or fire (especially older, printed photos in albums or boxes) or drive failure (digital pics!). Take some time this month to learn to protect those memories.

Weekly Celebrations for September’s 2nd Week

This week we enjoy 2 amazing breakfast foods. Although they’re really good any time of day! And we give some credit to a department that doesn’t usually get much: payroll.

National Waffle Week (September 6 – 12, 2020): Have a different waffle every day of the week! Or have your favorite every day. There’s really no wrong way to celebrate waffles. As long as you eat waffles, that is.

National Payroll Week (September 7 – 11, 2020): It’s not sexy, but payroll is critical to anyone who depends on a paycheck. And the payroll deductions taken from each of those paychecks helps keep the country working (mostly …). This week celebrates the partnership between employees, the programs they help fund, and the payroll professionals that make sure the money goes where it’s supposed to.

National Biscuits and Gravy Week (September 6 – 12, 2020): Start your day (and your week) off right with … what else? Biscuits and gravy! Yum. Yes, you can celebrate both waffles and biscuits & gravy in the same week. There’s no law saying you have to eat them only for breakfast!

Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 7 thru Sept. 13

Monday is of course Labor Day in the US. But that’s not all it is! The day’s celebrations include salami, acorn squash, and beer. All excellent additions to your Labor Day meal plans.

For the rest of the week we thank our dog walkers, be our weird selves, and swap ideas. We also make our beds, offer encouragement to others, and much more.

Are we ready to have another fun-tastic week? Yes, yes we are!

September 7:

National Salami Day: If you’re having a Labor Day feast, make sure it includes salami. And even if you’re not, include salami in your day.

National Neither Snow Nor Rain Day: In the middle of controversy over the post office, its budget, and recent mail delays, we get a reminder of the post office’s importance to the country. On this date in 1914 the main post office in New York City opened. Over the building’s entrance is that famous, but unofficial, motto: “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” So thank your mail carriers for all their hard work! (Yes, they have Labor Day off … thank them on Tuesday!).

National Beer Lovers’ Day: If you love beer, drink beer! Not that beer lovers need a special day to drink beer (or to be told to drink beer). But it’s nice to have your love validated, don’t you think?

National Acorn Squash Day: We think of it as a winter squash, but it isn’t really. Not that it matters. Acorn squash is yummy any time of year! And this is the day to get creative with it. Bake it, saute it, stuff it … The possibilities are endless!

September 8:

National Dog Walker Appreciation Day: Dog walkers do more than just walk the dog. At least the best ones do. They make sure your pups get the love & attention they crave when you can’t be there to give it. So if you have a dog walker, offer an extra thank-you for the day. Whether you say it with words, cash, or a small gift is up to you.

Another Look Unlimited Day: On this day we take another look at all the stuff around us. Whatever we don’t need/want anymore we get rid of. But not in the garbage! (Well, unless it really is garbage & completely unusable). Instead, donate it to your favorite local charity. You could also give friends/family members “first dibs” on taking it off your hands if they need it. Or find new ways you can use it … as long as you actually will use it.

National Ampersand Day: Isn’t “ampersand” a weird word? Ampersands themselves are a little weird, too. Because they can look so very different depending on the font! But they’re also quite useful & fun & easy to understand. So pepper all your writing with ampersands & celebrate this day right!

World Physiotherapy Day: This day recognizes physiotherapists for their important contributions to their patients’ mobility and overall wellness. Depending on where you live you may know physiotherapists as physical therapists. If you know any of these dedicated professionals, thank them for what they do.

National Ants on a Log Day: Celebrating this day is simple! Spread peanut butter on some celery, top it with a row of raisins, & munch away. It’s a great healthy snack for the whole family.

September 9:

National Teddy Bear Day: This is the day to give your teddy bear a hug. What do you mean you don’t have a teddy bear?! Everyone should have a teddy bear, no matter how old you are. Your childhood teddy is most special, of course. If you still have yours, get it out to celebrate this day. And then leave it out, because it’s part of who you are! If you don’t still have a childhood teddy, get yourself a new teddy bear to make new memories with. No! You’re not too old!

Wonderful Weirdos Day: Are you a weirdo? Do you know weirdos? Then this day is for you! Celebrate yourself and all the weirdos you love. The more weirdos the merrier! Because “normal” is boring, not to mention a completely man-made concept. Us weirdos are unapologetically ourselves, no matter what the “normal” people think.

National Wiener Schnitzel Day: Enjoy a traditional Austrian meal with a breaded veal patty and salad (lettuce, cucumber, or potato are all acceptable). Although the true Wiener Schnitzel must be veal, we won’t tell if you prefer pork or even chicken schnitzel. Spaetzle is also a popular side for this dish.

September 10:

National School Picture Day: Picture day will be different for many students this year. But that’s not stopping Lifetouch from celebrating the day they created just last year. The company is creating “America’s Yearbook,” a digital compilation of school pictures from their decades of creating memories. There’s also a contest, with 5 schools winning free school pictures for everyone and more.

Swap Ideas Day: On this day the world brainstorms! Whether you need a creative solution for a business problem, a new hobby project, or something else, trading ideas with others can spark even more useful ideas. So spend the day swapping ideas with as many people as possible as often as possible.

World Suicide Prevention Day: We’ve gotten better about talking about suicide and how to stop it. But we still have a long way to go. Suicide is still one of the top causes of death around the world. Use this day to learn more about how we can all be part of the solution and help spread the word.

National TV Dinner Day: This is one of the easiest food celebrations around! Heat up a pre-prepared meal and enjoy. As long as that meal wasn’t pre-prepared by you, anyway! This day is about the ultimate in convenience, pulling a tray out of the freezer & heating it up. The hardest part is deciding which meal to have (assuming you have more than one). These days it doesn’t have to be dinner either, because you can get these frozen meals for breakfast & lunch too. Bon appetit!

September 11:

Libraries Remember Day: See if your local library is having any events to commemorate September 11, 2001.

Patriot Day: Honor the memory of those who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks. And honor those who risked their own lives to save so many others. Observe a moment of silence at 8:46 am Eastern (the moment the 1st plane hit the World Trade Center). And see if there are any ceremonies in your community you can attend (or view online).

National Make Your Bed Day: Did you know that making your bed each day is supposed to help you sleep better? It’s worth a try, yes? And this is the day to get started. Make that bed in the morning & see how you sleep at night. Hopefully better! Then make it a daily habit.

National Hot Cross Bun Day: Make and eat hot cross buns to celebrate this day. No, we’re not sure why we’re celebrating this traditionally Lenten food item in September! But they’re tasty any day of the year. Here’s a hot cross bun recipe for you if you need one.

September 12:

National Iguana Awareness Day: This day is all about making sure your pet iguana is as healthy and happy as possible. Because these lovable reptiles are harder to care for than you might think.

International Programmers Day: On the 256th day of the year we celebrate programmers. Because in our highly computerized world almost everything we do depends on some kind of program! And programmers also keep innovating, creating new & better programs that can make our lives even easier (sometimes!).

National Day of Encouragement: Spend the day offering words of inspiration and reassurance to anyone who needs them. And even those you think don’t need them. Because they may need them most of all. Kindness and encouragement is free to give and can make all the difference to someone’s day.

National Chocolate Milkshake Day: Celebrate Saturday and Chocolate Milkshake Day with a rich, creamy chocolate milkshake. Start with this recipe and then add whatever extras your taste buds desire.

September 13:

International Chocolate Day: Celebrate Milton S. Hershey’s birthday with a Hershey bar. Or any chocolate really. Because chocolate is not only delicious, it’s good for you. As long as you don’t eat 20 or so pounds of the stuff at one time …

National Pet Memorial Day: Anyone who has ever loved and lost a pet knows they are never truly gone. They live on in our hearts. This day commemorates them all.

Pet Rock Fest: This silly-sounding event is actually quite serious! It’s an annual one-day festival to benefit animal-related organizations in Massachusetts. Most of us would probably never make it to the live event, but this year it’s gone “fur-tual” (virtual)! So anyone can join in the fun. Learn more about Pet Rock Fest and check out the day’s lineup to see what interests you.

Roald Dahl Day: The author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and other enchanting children’s books would have been 104 years old on this day. Lucky for us his books live on. So celebrate his birthday by reading one of them. He did write adult books as well as children’s. It’s up to you which you’d prefer to read!

National Peanut Day: Eat peanuts! Cook with peanuts. Bake with peanuts. Make your own peanut butter, even. Make it a thoroughly nutty day. Yes, we know peanuts aren’t nuts. But somehow a legumey day sounds weird. 😁
