Celebrate National Deep Dish Pizza Day Every April 5
Mmmm … pizza! An absolutely divine creation no matter how you slice it. Cheesy and tomatoey, with the perfect …. thin and crispy? … thick and chewy? … double? crust.
The best kind of crust is a never-ending debate. But on April 5 there is no debate. It’s National Deep Dish Pizza Day.
So whatever kind of crust you usually get, for this one day you must celebrate the thick, buttery crust developed in Chicago.
Although crust might not be the right word to describe this thing. It’s more like a bread bowl, holding in the mountain of toppings and sea of sauce.
Why a day just for deep dish pizza?
Why not?
Pizzeria Uno’s founder, Ike Sewell created this eye-popping (and stomach stretching!) delight back in 1943. And it caught on. Big-time.
These days enough people prefer the so-called Chicago-style pizza that most any place that calls itself a pizza joint has a deep dish pizza.
National Deep Dish Pizza Day began in 2009, started as a celebration of UNO’s 65th anniversary. The date chosen, April 5, apparently honors the date in 1979 when the first UNO’s outside Chicago opened in Boston.
And we strongly believe it’s a delicious day worth continuing to celebrate.
A Bite of Pizza Trivia
Both the ancient Greeks and Romans had a dish with a bread crust and toppings. In Greece they coated their bread with oils and covered it with cheese and herbs. The Romans used cheese and honey.
Americans prefer thin crust pizza. But as mentioned enough of us like deep dish to give it it’s own day!
Pepperoni is Americans’ topping of choice.
Congress officially declared pizza a vegetable in 2011. Seriously.

Ideas For Celebrating National Deep Dish Pizza Day
What, you actually need us to tell you how to celebrate? Eat a deep dish pizza!
Order one from your favorite pizza place or make one yourself.
Great choices for buying one include Uno’s (of course), Gino’s East or Lou Malnati’s.
Of course, if you’re not in Chicagoland, the odds of one of these being near you are low. Lou Malnati’s is only in the Chicago area, and Gino’s East’s only non-Chicago locations are in east Texas. Uno’s has many more locations, but mostly in the upper Midwest and eastern states. There’s also a few international Uno’s.
If you’re looking for deep dish pizza recipes, try one of these:
- Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza from Sally’s Baking Addiction. Makes 2 pizzas. It even includes a recipe for the sweeter-than-usual sauce often used on these pizzas.
- Chicago-style Deep Dish Pizzas from Emeril Lagasse: A slightly different crust and sauce. Also makes 2 pizzas.
Of course, you can change up your toppings to whatever you prefer. Or follow the recipe exactly. Your choice. But it’s the thick crust and sauce that really make the pizza.
Know someone who loves making deep dish pizza? Celebrate with them. The bonus here is you get to enjoy homemade pizza without making the pizza!
But bring a little gift to show your appreciation. Either contribute to the ingredients for making today’s pizza, or get something your pizza chef can use for his or her next creation. Consider:
- The Pizza Bible: Quite possibly the only pizza making guide you or your friend will ever need. It covers styles from Neapolitan and Deep Dish to Wood Fired, Calzones and more.
- Pizza Seasoning
- Hot & Spicy Pizza Topping
If your friend also likes thin-crust (heresy!), a pizza stone might also be appropriate.
