Celebrate No Housework Day Every April 7
If you’re not a fan of household chores (and we don’t actually know anyone who is … or at least not anyone who admits to it) April 7 is your lucky day. Because for this one day you have permission to skip the housework in honor of No Housework Day.
That’s right. Leave the beds unmade and the dishes unwashed.
Dirty laundry, sweeping and dusting can wait until the 8th.
On the 7th you rest.
And for your day of rest you can thank Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat.com. They started this day, along with dozens of others.
According to the Roys, you are to use the day to “Give it a rest!” and not feel at all guilty about it.
Remember: No guilt!
This is very important. You must not feel guilty for abandoning your housework. You’re not. You’re simply taking a short (very short!) break from it.

How to Celebrate No Housework Day
The name says it all!
Individuals
The great thing about this holiday is you can do whatever you please! As long as it’s not housework, anyway.
So:
- Enjoy a movie and your favorite snacks without worrying about all the things left undone.
- Finally finish that book collecting dust on your nightstand. Don’t dust it off beforehand!
- Take a walk and enjoy the day or evening. Bring your spouse or a friend. Or enjoy the time alone.
- Never have time for baths? Now you do! Bring that book in with you, along with a glass of wine.
- If you can’t face a pile of dirty dishes in the sink after dinner without washing them, then go out to eat. Nothing to clean up!
- In fact, go out to eat or order delivery no matter what. Cooking is housework!
- Plan a mini-spa day. Get a mani/pedi, massage, or facial. Or even all three if you have time!
If you absolutely can’t handle the thought of doing these things for yourself while there’s undone housework, then hire someone to do the cleaning for the day.
Or tell your spouse/significant other/kids that it’s their turn to do the housework. Obviously this only works if you normally do it all. If they already pitch in regularly, then you all get the day off!
Once your No Housework Day is over, these books might help you cope with the other 364 days of the year:
- Housework Blues: A Survival Guide: Learn how to change your attitude about your housework and make keeping your home less stressful.
- Houseworks: Straightforward tips for cleaning, de-cluttering and generally taking charge of your home’s organization.
- The House That Cleans Itself: Ok, your home won’t really clean itself. But this book offers tips for getting and keeping your home clean in half the time..
Companies
If your company offers housecleaning services, create a special for this day! Either a percentage off now or a coupon for a buy one service now & get a discount on future service.
If you offer a variety of cleaning services, consider a buy one service/get a 2nd at half price (both done on the same day), or something similar.
If you sell cleaning products but not cleaning service, have a sale and encourage people to stock up on the supplies they’ll need on April 8!
[…] No Housework Day: This one’s simple! Do not, under any circumstances, do any housework on April 7. Besides, depending on how long you’ve been under stay-at-home orders you’ve probably done all the housework already! […]
[…] No Housework Day: For this day all housework is banned! Enjoy your day instead. And do it guilt-free. […]
