Celebrate National Lemonade Day Every August 20
Lemonade is a delicious drink any day of the year, but on a hot August afternoon it’s especially refreshing.
So it’s appropriate that National Lemonade Day falls in mid August.
We don’t know who created National Lemonade Day, but who cares!
It’s a great excuse to enjoy a glass or two (not that we really need an excuse).
Lemonade History and Trivia
Humans have been enjoying lemonade for hundreds of years, as far back as the 13th century. Most likely the first people to create lemonade were those living in the Mediterranean region.
Those earliest drinks were the simplest form of lemonade: lemon juice with sugar added.
Today we have all kinds of variations of the drink, with additions like strawberry, blueberry, or watermelon. Or spiked lemonades with vodka, whiskey or other alcohols.
Pink lemonade has a controversial history. According to some the Greeks colored lemonade with a bit of wine to serve as a special treat for the children. But the New York Times obituary for Henry E. “Bunk Allen” Allot states that he created the drink by accident when he dropped red cinnamon candies into a batch of lemonade.
A Word About the Lemonade Day Campaign
The National Lemonade Day we celebrate in August is different from the Lemonade Day campaign. This national campaign helps teach kids to be entrepreneurs by teaching them about business and then helping them open a lemonade stand.
The organization works with cities across the country to waive permits for one day so the kids can operate their business for the day. Dates for these Lemonade Days vary by city.
Although this day isn’t really connected to the campaign, it’s a worthy cause. If you agree, visit the website to learn more about it. If you like what you see, maybe you’d consider donating or helping get a day started in your city. If not, feel free to get on with celebrating National Lemonade Day.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand
This isn’t really related to this day either, but we came across it in our research:
Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a charity to raise awareness of and fund research into pediatric cancers. It’s named for Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in her first year of life.
When she was four Alex decided she wanted to raise money for other kids with cancer. So she set up a lemonade stand. And raised $2000 in just one day.
Alex lost her battle with cancer four years later (in 2004), but her little lemonade stand project has grown stronger in the years since. It has funded hundreds of research projects and helped support families of children fighting cancer.
If you’re interested in helping kids with cancer, visit the website to learn more about the organization and its goals. If you like what you see, consider getting involved.
Remember: Always check out charities we mention for yourself. We are not recommending the ones we mention, only offering them as suggestions. You get to decide for yourself if they meet your standards. Thanks!
