Celebrate National Gumdrop Day Every February 15
Hopefully you got your fill of chocolate for Valentine’s Day yesterday. Because today we move on to something sweet and fruity or spicy: the gumdrop.
Yep, it’s National Gumdrop Day.
Nope, we have no idea who first started this day or when. Probably either a gumdrop lover or candy maker.
But either way, grab a handful and indulge in this sweet treat.
What the Heck is A Gumdrop Anyway?
Most of us have probably eaten gumdrops without really thinking too much about it. They’re sweet, sticky and delicious. What else to you need to know?
Well, nothing really. But maybe you’re curious.
Gumdrops are little pellet-shaped “drops” of gelatin or pectin flavored with fruit flavors (like orange, lemon or cherry) or spice (cinnamon or cardamom are popular). Then they’re covered in sugar.
Rumor has it that Percy Trusdale first created gumdrops in 1801. But we can’t confirm that, and most sources we found suspect it’s just a rumor.
But they have been around for some 200 years. So they’re a kind of old-fashioned candy. But they’re still popular.
In addition to being tasty by the handful, they’re the quintessential gingerbread house decoration.
And where would Candyland be without Gumdrop Mountain and Gumdrop Pass?
You might call the gumdrop the original gummi candy. Today you can find gummi bears, fish, worms and a whole zoo’s worth of other gummi critters. Along with gummi “foods” like pizzas!

Ideas to Celebrate Gumdrop Day
Devouring a bag of gumdrops is certainly one way to go. But if you’re feeling more creative, try using gumdrops in a recipe. Or even making your own gumdrops.
Here are a few to try:

For something with a bit more kick, try this Gumdrop Martini or this Gumdrop Cocktail. A sweet way to unwind after a long day!
If you’re feeling slightly less creative, just use gumdrops to decorate the top of a cake or cupcakes.
And for anyone who’s interested in trying to actually make gumdrops, we found this Candy Gumdrops recipe.
