Celebrate National Love Your Pet Day Every February 20
Do you love your pet? Of course you do. And today is the day to show your pet(s) some extra love, on National Love Your Pet Day.
Do we really need a day to remind us to love our pets? Probably not. But just like with people, sometimes we get busy and forget to show just how much we care.
So this day reminds us to do that. And they deserve at least that.
After all, pets are good for your health and happiness. Having them around can help lower stress and decrease depression and anxiety. At the very least, they give you a reason to get up in the morning, to make sure they have food and water.
And they ask for very little in return. Well, except for that food and water and maybe a nice warm lap.
And most of us are willing to give them that. According to data from the American Veterinary Medical Association 57% of US households had a pet in 2016.
Of course, “pets” includes not only dogs and cats (still the top 2), but the fish, turtles, snakes, mice, hamsters and other animals people love to keep and pamper.
Now, we know everyone who truly loves their pets considers every day as Love Your Pet Day. But today is the “official” unofficial day to remind you to make them feel extra special.
Who started this day? We haven’t been able to discover that. But we suspect it was someone who loved pets!

How to Celebrate Love Your Pet Day
Of course you’ll want to shower your pet (or pets!) with love.
- Give him extra treats
- Get a new toy and then play with him
- Give her extra cuddles and pets
- Give your pets a good brushing
- Take your dog for an extra-long walk
And part of loving your pet is making sure he’s healthy. So if you haven’t been to the vet in a while, make an appointment to do that soon. That’ll help ensure he’s around for you to keep loving for a long time.
But you could also extend that love to all the pets without humans to love them. Shelters and rescue organizations are constantly full with animals that need love too.
If you’re looking to add another animal to your family, consider adopting one of these homeless animals.
Donate to your favorite animal organization. It doesn’t have to be money either. Your time, old towels (usable!) and even newspapers are very welcome at many shelters. Just ask; they’ll be happy to tell you what they need most.
What better way to honor your well-loved pet than by helping to give less fortunate animals the chance to find that same love?
