Celebrate Read in the Bathtub Day Every February 9
Today’s the day to escape into a cocoon of warmth and imagination, even if just for a little while.
It’s Read in the Bathtub Day!
That’s right. You have “official” permission to lock the bathroom door, draw a warm bath (with bubbles, if you’d like), and relax with your favorite book.
Maybe even bring your rubber ducky back out to join you (you did celebrate Rubber Ducky Day a few weeks ago, right?!)
Oh, and leave your phone on the other side of that locked door. This is your time. You can be unreachable for a little while. Really. It’s ok.
Let your family know to not disturb you. Hang a “Do Not Disturb” sign for good measure.
We don’t know who started Read in the Bathtub Day or when. And we don’t really care, because it’s a fantastic idea.
The why is pretty easy to figure out. Someone felt the need to relax and recharge, and reading in the tub sounded like the perfect solution.
That’s something we can all relate to. Life is stressful, but a bath is soothing and relaxing. Plus, getting lost in a book takes your mind off whatever’s stressing you.
For a little bit anyway
And sometimes that’s all you need to reframe the problem and then solve it. Or at least handle it easier.

Celebrating Read in the Bathtub Day
Ok, we’ve already established that you’ll be spending part of it in the tub with a good book. But what book? If you’re looking for ideas, here are a few:
- Looking for humor? Consider Yes Please by Amy Poehler
- Like quick-read mysteries? Consider a James Patterson book.
- Science fiction lovers might enjoy the New York Times bestseller, The Martian by Andy Weir
- Or check out Amazon’s 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime
- Or search the New York Public Library recommendations to discover new favorites.
If you have kids you need to keep occupied while you’re enjoying your alone time, consider giving them a book, too. But they’ll have to enjoy theirs someplace other than the tub!
Family Education has a list of book lists (yes, really, a list of lists) to help you find a book for kids of all ages and many different interests.
Now that you’re taken care of, what about your friends and family? Make sure they know about this day.
Maybe even give a gift to help them get started:
- A good book (one of the above or one you know they’ll enjoy)
- Bath supplies, like bubble bath or salts
- A rubber ducky to share their bath
- Flameless candles to set a soothing mood
- A bath pillow to help with relaxation
Now you’re ready to hop in the tub and enjoy. Go!
