Celebrate World Nutella Day Every February 5

World Nutella Day - February 5

February 5 is World Nutella Day

Chocolate and hazelnuts blended into a silky spread. Mmmm. Is there anything better spread on toast, sandwiched between cookies or just enjoyed with a spoon? If you say no, then World Nutella Day is for you!

Blogger Sara Rosso of Ms. Adventures in Italy came up with the day in 2007. Why? Because she’s a huge fan of Nutella, of course.

Sara and fellow blogger Michelle Fabio of Bleeding Espresso connected with other fans through the holiday’s webpage, Facebook page and various other social media.

They built quite a following, too. The Facebook page had 46,231 fans as of February 2015. And 6,635 fans were following the Twitter feed. Clearly there are a few other people around the world who like this stuff ;)

In fact, the community of fans has grown so much that Sara decided to transfer control of the World Nutella Day properties to Ferrero, the maker of the creamy spread. But she still enjoys Nutella as much as ever.

World Nutella Day Almost Died

Did you know that in 2013 Sara almost had to shut down all the World Nutella Day pages? Ferrero sent her a cease and desist letter, telling her she needed to stop her unauthorized use of the brand name.

Lucky for the fans of the holiday, news outlets picked up the story and it quickly spread across the web. The very social media pages she was ordered to take down were used to mount a campaign to save the day.

And it worked.

Within hours Ferrero changed its mind, issuing statements thanking Sara for her devotion to Nutella.

We can’t help wondering, if the day had been canceled, would Nutella fans have boycotted Ferrero by refusing to buy their products, including Nutella? Or would that have been just a little to much to ask?

We’ll probably never know. And that’s just fine by us.

Celebrating World Nutella Day

Individuals

Clearly you’ll be eating Nutella today. On toast or straight off the spoon is always delicious.

But if you’d like to be a little more creative today, try one or more of these recipes. There’s cakes & cheesecake & cookies. Even ice cream.

You could also make your own hazelnut chocolate spread. But somehow that seems to go against the spirit of the day.

Companies

Many companies that sell or make food can find ways to celebrate this day.

If you just sell Nutella, consider creating a display with it and announcing the day. Have small cards or flyers with suggestions on how to use the spread. Simple suggestions could include spreading it on toast (with a light sprinkling of cinnamon, even), using it to frost cupcakes or making crepes with banana and Nutella filling.

Bakeries could create a variety of sweet treats using Nutella.

If you host events like tastings or cooking classes, consider holding one on February 5 and making it Nutella themed.

What other ways can you think of to celebrate? Share!
