Observe World Thinking Day Every February 22
What is World Thinking Day?
It’s a day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to think about and celebrate their fellow Guides and Scouts around the world.
It gives them a chance to consider what it means to be part of a global community.
Now more than ever this is an important concept.
Each year there’s a theme and activities for the different levels of Girl Scouts. And there’s even an official patch to earn and wear.
Celebrating More Than 80 Years of Thinking
World Thinking Day started back in 1926 during the Scouts’ fourth International Conference. At the time it was just called Thinking Day.
They chose February 22 as the day because that’s the birthday of Olave Baden-Power (the Scouts’ World Chief Guide) and her husband Lord Baden-Power, the founder of the Boy Scouts.
As a side note, the Boy Scouts also celebrate on February 22. They call the day Founders Day.
The movement grew over the years. The 1932 World Conference brought about the creation of the World Association’s Thinking Day Fund, which the Scouts can hold fundraisers to contribute to.
And the name changed to World Thinking Day in 1999 to clarify that it’s a worldwide effort.

Ideas for Observing World Thinking Day
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts sets the theme each year. The various Girl Scout groups around the world can then choose activities to support that theme.
Individuals
Girl Scouts who are interested in getting the Thinking Day award can find suggested activities on the Girl Scouts website.
You can also find unofficial activities at ActivityVillage.
The goal of this day is so worthy, even non-scouts may want to participate in spirit. No matter how old or young, everybody can take some time to think and learn about issues affecting the world.
Companies
Companies can help, too. Take a look at the day’s goals and activities. Then think of ways to help local Girl Scout troops achieve their goals.
Helping with a fundraiser might be one idea.
Does your company do business around the world? Hold an educational session on how bridging cultural differences and forming strong alliances can make an impact on communities far from your home base.
Get creative, then reach out to local troops to see if they are interested in your help.
