Celebrate Curmudgeons Day Every January 29
As January, with its cold gray days, draws to a close it’s easy to be feeling a bit grumpy. Perhaps wondering if warmth and sunshine will ever return. So it seems like the right time to celebrate the curmudgeonly on, what else: Curmudgeons Day.
According to Merriam-Webster, a curmudgeon is “a person (especially an old man) who is easily annoyed or angered and who often complains.”
So today is a day for the complainers. The fussers. The sourpusses. And the bellyachers.
Why do we have a day for curmudgeons? Why not?
Do We Love Curmudgeons?
Most of us knows at least one. Come on, you know you do. Or maybe you’re the curmudgeon of your group.
And face it, we love them.
Why else would they make such great characters in books and movies? Why else would we find Oscar the Grouch so inexplicably endearing?
And what else could explain the love affair we’ve all been having with Grumpy Cat? Ok, some of us love her just for being a unique-looking cat. But even non-cat people can’t seem to get enough of her.
In other words, curmudgeonliness is in.
So is:
- Grouchiness
- Crustiness
- Peevishness
- Crabbiness
And many other cantankerousness-type feelings.
Don’t worry if you’re neither old nor a man. You can still be a curmudgeon and celebrate Curmudgeon’s Day.
Curmudgeons Day is celebrated every year on the birthday of that icon of curmudgeonlyness, W.C. Fields. He and many of the characters he played were usually quite curmudgeonly.
If you’re not familiar with him (and unless you enjoy old movies, you probably aren’t. He died in 1946), here are a few curmudgeonly things he has supposedly said:
- I am free of all prejudices. I hate everyone equally.
- I never vote for anyone. I always vote against.
- I never met a kid I liked.
- Never try to impress a woman, because if you do she’ll expect you to keep up the standard for the rest of your life.
We’re not entirely sure if he said these things as himself or as one of his characters.

Ideas For Celebrating Curmudgeons Day
You could simply spend the day feeling curmudgeonly. Probably best done at home, since your boss may not take to kindly to a cantankerous attitude.
Not feeling grumpy? Celebrate the curmudgeon(s) in your life and see if you can put a smile on their sourpusses.
There are also other ways for you to enjoy curmudgeonliness without being one yourself.
Watch a curmudgeonly movie. Ones with popular curmudgeons include:
- Up (Carl)
- Grumpy Old Men (with two grouches, John and Max)
- Dennis the Menace (Mr. George Wilson)
- Gran Torino (Walt)
Or watch a movie starring the man the day is celebrated for: W.C. Fields. Find 10 of his movies in the 3-Disc W.C. Fields Comedy Favorites Collection. We always enjoy My Little Chickadee and It’s a Gift.
