Celebrate Rubber Ducky Day on January 13 Every Year
Who doesn’t love rubber duckies?
They’re bright and cute and make bath-time fun! No, we haven’t taken a bath with a ducky in quite a long time, but we’re reconsidering that :)
After all, don’t we all have an inner 5-year old that should occasionally be allowed out?
Well today’s the day to be a child again … it’s Rubber Ducky (Duckie) Day!
No one seems to be sure exactly when or where the rubber ducky was created. But most seem to agree it was sometime in the late 1800s, shortly after rubber was invented.
Over time they managed to worm their way into the hearts of kids and adults alike the world over.
And Sesame Street’s Ernie and his Rubber Duckie only made them more popular.

Fun Rubber Ducky Facts
Rubber duckies have helped scientists track ocean currents. Yep, it’s true! A shipment of toys called Friendly Floatees (rubber ducks, beavers, frogs and turtles) fell into the Pacific Ocean from a cargo ship in 1992. They started washing ashore in Alaska the following November. Scientists continued to predict and track their movements for years.
The largest collection of rubber duckies belongs to Charlotte Lee of Seattle, Washington .
The Spreading Joy Around the World Tour featured 54-foot tall (16 meters) rubber duckies (well, really inflatable yellow ducks shaped like the iconic toy) created by Dutch conceptual artist Florentijin Hofman. Although the ducks did indeed bring joy to cities around the world beginning in 2007, they also brought disappointment when they were damaged and deflated on several occasions. Poor duckies :(
Rubber duckies are also awesome fund-raisers. No, really! Rubber duck races and other events have been very successful at raising money for a variety of charities around the world:
- The Annual Rubber Ducky Festival in Valencia, CA raises money for the Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers. Participants sponsor ducks for $5 apiece and thousands of ducks take part.
- Almost 52,000 ducks “swam” down the Danube in Budapest in September 2014 to benefit the United Nations Children’s Fund.
- The Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby is an annual Chicago event to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.
There’s probably a rubber ducky event near you, too!
