Along with Mom and Apple Pie, fried chicken is classically American (sort of). And every July 6 we celebrate this finger-lickin’ meal with National Fried Chicken Day.

Yum! Is your mouth watering too?

We’re not sure who started this day, but it was no doubt someone who loved fried chicken.

Fried Chicken Trivia

Although we tend to think of fried chicken as traditional Southern cooking, Europeans were frying chicken during the Middle Ages. The technique of deep-frying chicken apparently came to the Southern US with Scottish immigrants.

Of course, Southern cooks started adding their own seasonings and spices to make it their own. Paprika, cayenne pepper, and/or garlic are popular additions.

The traditional fat for frying chicken is lard, but health-conscious cooks may use a variety of oils (corn, peanut, canola, etc) instead. A flavorful batter and making sure the skin gets crisp is the most important secret to amazing fried chicken.

Each cook has his or her own preferred method, but pan-frying, deep frying and pressure frying are all acceptable ways to make your fried chicken. Other cooks may disagree!

There’s a variety of ways to coat your chicken too (again, many cooks may disagree!). You can make a batter to dip it in, or you might prefer to dip it in a liquid like buttermilk and then roll it in flour (or the reverse). Today breadcrumbs or even crushed corn flake cereals are also popular coatings.

Some cooks like to marinate the chicken before coating it. Others prefer to let their well-seasoned batter do the talking.

How to Celebrate National Fried Chicken Day

This is another simple one: eat fried chicken!

Make it yourself or go to your favorite restaurant and let them make it.

Do you have a favorite, go-to fried chicken recipe? This is the day to remember why you love it so much.

Or you could certainly try a new recipe:

If you don’t care for measuring and mixing, you can find a variety of fried chicken coating mixes that make the job simple.

If you like experimenting with different recipes, you can also find cookbooks devoted specifically to fried chicken and the sides that go with it:

If it’s a nice day, consider throwing a backyard picnic and inviting all your family, friends and neighbors. Make it easier on yourself by making it a potluck. You supply the chicken and everybody else brings the sides and desserts.

Make sure at least one person brings each of these for a “proper” fried chicken meal:

  • Corn (on the cob, of course!). Find links to corn recipes on our Corn on the Cob Day page.
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Biscuits (preferably buttermilk)
  • Coleslaw
  • Potato salad
  • Apple pie for dessert!
  • Ice cream … Either to make your pie a la mode or to eat on its own … After all, July is also National Ice Cream Month.

If you like your chicken & waffles, recruit someone to make the waffles (no toasters, please!).

Will you be celebrating National Fried Chicken Day this year?
