Houseplants like to get outside in the fresh air and sunshine too. Those long, gloomy winter days make them sad and frail.

So on July 27 we make them supremely happy by taking them for a walk. That’s right … A walk! Why? Because it’s Take Your Houseplants for a Walk Day.

Why else?!

We just love these holidays from Wellcats’ Tom and Ruth Roy. They’re fun & quirky. And some (like this one) actually do have a serious side.

The serious side for today is to help you provide a healthy environment for your houseplants. According to the Wellcat Holidays page, on your walk your plants will get to know their environment and be healthier for it.

We’re not too sure about that, but our plants are bigger and brighter and stronger when they’ve been outside all summer.

And really, there’s no downside (well, maybe apart from funny looks). Your plants get fresh air and sunshine. You get exercise. A win-win!

Ideas For Celebrating Take Your Houseplants for a Walk Day

Well, you could literally take your houseplants for a walk. Put them in a wagon and stroll down the block. Other transport options could include a skateboard, wheelbarrow or stroller. It all depends on how many plants you’re walking.

You could even organize your friends and neighbors to have a little (or big) plant parade down the street. Maybe even recruit one or two friends with “brown thumbs” to judge the best plants of their “green thumb” friends. Categories could include best flowers, greenest, and biggest.

If you’re not quite ready to be that silly (why not?!), you could evaluate your plants’ current environment and see if there might be a better place for them.

  • Are they all still inside? Take them for a walk to the outside for the summer.
  • If you don’t have room to put them outside, at least see if you can take them on a walk to a window where they’ll get more sun.
  • Are they outside but getting too much/not enough sun? Move them to a more suitable location.
  • Are they getting eaten/knocked over by animals in the yard? See if there’s someplace more protected you can put them.

See, you don’t have to take them far to take your houseplants for a walk.

If you don’t have any houseplants (again: Why not?), today’s the perfect day to add one or more to your household. Then you can take it for a walk from the store/nursery to your car and another walk into your yard or inside the house.

And, although it doesn’t really involve much walking (at least not for the plant), if you have any you’ve been meaning to re-pot, today might be the day to tackle that. After all, part of the reason for the day is to be more aware of proper plant care.
