Celebrate National Cereal Day Every March 7

National Cereal Day - March 7

March 7 is National Cereal Day

Do you start your day with a bowl of cereal? If so, you’re like 49% of Americans who do the same.

And March 7 is the perfect excuse to eat even more cereal: It’s National Cereal Day.

So whether your cereal of choice is bran flakes, Cap’n Crunch, granola or Trix, you have something to celebrate.

We’re not sure who started this day, but we suspect it was someone who loves cereal.

Some Bites of Cereal Trivia

Looking at the cereal aisle today it’s hard to image a time when cereal didn’t exist. But as recently as the 1860s it didn’t.

Breakfast was bacon & eggs, sausage & eggs, etc. Basically lots of protein; not much grain.

Then came bran nuggets.

A man named Dr. James Caleb Jackson invented this cereal and called it Granula. It wasn’t sugar-sweetened or even very tasty. It was just dense nuggets of bran, so hard they had to be soaked overnight.

Another doctor, John Kellogg, was also looking for healthier foods for his patients. He and his brother Will eventually invented Corn Flakes. But it was an accident. They made a mistake with one of their experiments and discovered how to turn grains into flakes.

Cheeriotes arrived in 1941. The name was changed to Cheerios in 1945.

Dr. Kellogg once hand signed the Corn Flakes boxes to prove they were authentic.

Horatio Magellan Crunch–Cap’n Crunch’s “real” name–was born on Crunch Island in the Sea of Milk.

The Kellogg Company is headquartered in Battle Creek, Michigan. So the city got the nicknames “Cereal City” and “cereal capital of the world.”
