We’re not sure where they go, those poor socks that vanish from every load of laundry. But every May 9—Lost Sock Memorial Day—we can take a moment to remember them. And hope they’ve found mates from other loads of laundry in lost sock limbo.

We can even hope that this is the day that lost sock from our very favorite pair finally shows back up. But you probably shouldn’t count on it.

Why do socks go lost? We have no idea. It’s one of those mysteries with no answer.

Who created Lost Sock Memorial Day? That also appears to be a mystery destined to never be solved.

But no matter. If you’ve ever worn socks, odds are you’ve lost at least one sock in your lifetime. So this day’s for you!

Ideas For Celebrating Lost Sock Memorial Day

This is the perfect excuse to get your socks organized. Gather them all up and make your matches.

Then collect all the unmatched, left behind socks and have a moment of silence for the missing. Take a picture of them if you’d like.

Share it on social media as a permanent memorial.

Then be brutal … Throw them out!

Or if you just can’t quite bear that you can give your poor, unmatched socks a chance at a second life … As rags! Stash them in your rag bag and use them for cleaning.

If you have kids, you might even turn them into sock puppets … On second thought, who needs kids to make sock puppets?!

Now how about shopping for some new socks? You might even find your next favorite pair today:

• Cartoon character socks (princess)
• Shark socks (men’s)
• Coffee socks (women’s)
• Ruby red slipper socks
• Toe socks
• Thermal boot socks
• Dress socks

 

And resolve never to lose another sock to the hungry washing machine or dryer. How?

• One idea is to pin pairs of socks together with safety pins before washing. Then they’ll stay together until you put them away! (Except for the occasional safety pin that comes open in the wash …).
• You can also find a variety of sock clips, sock locks and sock holders. We have no clue if they work any better than safety pins. But if you’d like to try them, they’re out there!

 

What else can you do to celebrate this silly day?

Throw a sock party! Sure, why not? Some ideas for your party:

• Tell your guests to wear their silliest, craziest, most creative socks. And of course you’ll have to spend the evening without shoes, showing off those socks.
• Have everyone bring a pair of socks wrapped as a gift. Then do a random gift exchange and see what everyone gets.
• Don’t forget to keep the sock theme going with your invitations. Use a picture of a single, lost sock. Or a pile of mismatched socks. Be creative!

 

Of course you’ll want lots of food and drink at these parties. Socks alone probably aren’t going to cut it! ;)
