On May 19 the sun must shine. Yes, it’s absolutely required. Because without sunshine, we can’t properly celebrate May Ray Day!

Yep. After a rainy April, and schizophrenic weather in early May, we’re all ready to get outside and soak up some rays of sunshine.

And that’s pretty much all May Ray Day is about.

Mid- to late May is the perfect time to enjoy a day of sunshine in many parts of the country. The weather’s finally warm enough to enjoy without being bundled up.

But it’s not so warm we just want to retreat to our air-conditioned homes. In other words, May offers a few days of perfection. Usually.

So don’t miss out. Enjoy them!

We don’t know who created May Ray Day, but we’re happy to celebrate it.

Scroll down for some ideas on celebrating this bright, sunny and unofficial holiday.

Celebrating May Ray Day

This one’s about as simple as it gets.

If the sun’s shining, go out and soak up some of its rays.

  • Have a picnic in the park.
  • Invite family and friends to a BBQ in your back yard.
  • Go to the beach, if there’s one nearby. Beach volleyball, anyone?
  • Take a walk, around the neighborhood, through a forest preserve, or anywhere you please.
  • Finally get your gardening started.
  • Do absolutely nothing. But do it outside.

Of course, if you have to work you may have to have a shorter celebration. Perhaps a long lunch outside? Or even just your regular lunch break (plus any other breaks) out in the sunshine.

(Do remember to soak up rays safely … wearing sunscreen!)

Weather not cooperating? Stare at a picture of sunshine and imagine yourself there.

It’s not quite the same, but it’ll have to do.

Here are a few pictures to get you started.

Of course, you could also celebrate other rays.

Is your name Ray? Celebrate yourself.

Then there’s…

  3. […] May Ray Day: For this day we celebrate sunshine! Yes, the rays from the sun are the ones the day is about. Just be sure to celebrate them safely. And if the sun isn’t cooperating with the spirit of the day, celebrate some other rays. Like stingrays. Or Ray Bradbury. […]
