Celebrate National Cat Day Every October 29
Although cats no doubt think this should be every day, October 29 is National Cat Day.
It’s a day to celebrate all things feline. To recognize the loving little creatures cats are. And to help more of them find their very own furever homes. Because each and every one deserves it.
Colleen Paige created National Cat Day (along with many other animal-related days). The first celebration was in 2005. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals supports the day.
The day is different from the many other cat days celebrated during the year. These include World Cat Day on February 17 and International Cat Day on August 8. Of course, there’s also Black Cat Appreciation Day and Global Cat Day.
And let’s not forget: The whole month of September is Happy Cat Month!
Clearly we love our cats. As well we should.
For the Love of Cats
Dogs may be man’s best friend, but the cats didn’t get that memo. They’ve stolen hearts in 34% of American households. More than dogs!
Cats first became domesticated some 12,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent area of the Middle East. And they had an important job to do: Keep the rodents away from stored grains.
Of course, they were also revered as gods in Ancient Egypt. And this knowledge seems to have been passed down through the centuries in cat DNA. Because they certainly rule the household!

Ideas For Celebrating National Cat Day
According to the day’s official website, the point of the day is “to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.”
Well that seems easy enough! If you have a cat (or two, or three …) spoil him or her today.
- Maybe some extra treats
- Or a new toy
- A spiffy new cat tree (although you know he’ll prefer the box it came in)
Other ideas:
- Share pictures of your furry love on your favorite social media sites.
- Give her a good brushing to help prevent hairballs.
- Join the Most Cuddly Cat Photo Contest (assuming your cat’s cuddly …)
Don’t share you life with a feline friend? Consider adopting one. Petfinder is a great place to start (or your favorite rescue organization).
Can’t share your home with a soft, purring little ball of fur? (I’m sorry). You can still help other felines who haven’t yet found their furever homes:
- Volunteer at a local shelter or rescue group
- Donate money or supplies (many organizations have Amazon wish lists)
If there are feral cats in your neighborhood, learn how to start a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program. Because their lives matter too, even if they’ll never want to live in a house.
