On October 14 we celebrate everybody’s favorite part of the meal: dessert! And it’s only right that these sweet treats get their own day. Let’s hear it for National Dessert Day!

It’s a day to enjoy dessert, guilt-free.

No worrying about sugar content, calories, fat or any of that other boring stuff today.

Obviously if you’re on medically restricted diet you may still have to worry about some of these things. But don’t let that stop you from celebrating. Just have a dessert that meets your dietary needs.

We don’t know who created this day or when. The why seems pretty easy: To encourage everyone to enjoy dessert.

It may have been a dessert lover who was tired of indulging alone. Or maybe a baker looking to increase business. Whoever it was we thank him. Or her.

A Bite of Dessert History

Once upon a time desserts were generally nuts and natural candies. There was very little preparation involved. And for the most part, even sweet treats were nutritious.

Those early desserts were probably not really considered an after-meal treat. Rather they were likely just the last course of a meal.

And in early Western culture sweets were expensive. So only the rich could afford them regularly. The lower classes considered themselves lucky if they could afford them for a holiday treat.

Today’s desserts can still be simple and even nutritious. But more often they’re decadent creations we love (scrumptious!) to hate (my waistline!).

In America we tend to call anything sweet we eat after a meal dessert. That could be more traditional desserts like cakes, pies, cookies, or ice cream. Or it could be something like a milkshake.

Celebration Ideas for National Dessert Day

Have dessert!

If possible, have dessert after every meal you eat.

Enjoy at least one dessert with family or friends. It’s much more fun to indulge together.

It doesn’t matter what the dessert is. Have your favorite!

It doesn’t matter where you get it. Buy it at the store. Order it at a restaurant. Make it yourself … Or even better, get someone else to make it for you (homemade goodness without the effort!).

Try one of these recipe ideas. Or pass the recipe along to that wonderful someone who’s going to treat you to a homemade dessert.

  • Apple Pie by Grandma Ople: Apparently a prize-winning recipe.
  • Lemon Cake: Light lemon cake with lemony frosting.
  • Fried Bourbon-Soaked Twinkies: I didn’t miss Twinkies when they went away for a brief time. But seeing this recipe makes me incredibly happy they’re back … Must try this!
  • Banana Pudding: No cooking involved with this one
  • Pumpkin Ginger Cupcakes: Since it’s fall, we’ve included the obligatory pumpkin flavored dessert. It does have 5 stars, and the poster claims even people who don’t like pumpkin like these.
  • Snickers Milkshakes in Candy Cups: This looks like a lot of work, but if you’re up for it, it also looks amazing. Or you could get your creative friend to make them!
