Celebrate Google’s Birthday Every September 27
Guess what? If it’s September 27 then it’s Google’s Birthday!
Sort of.
At least, that’s the day Google tells us to celebrate (in recent years, anyway).
And we always do what Google says. Right?
Google’s Actual Birth Date
So … Google’s “real” birthday depends on exactly how you define the “birth” of a company.
When it was first conceived? That would probably be sometime in 1995. That’s when founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin met.
Or some might say January 1996. That’s when they started working on a new search engine that would eventually become Google. Its original name was BackRub.
When its web domain was registered? That would be September 15, 1997.
When it was incorporated? (That seems reasonable). That would be September 4, 1998.
When it officially opened for business? (Also reasonable). That would be a few days later, on September 7, 1998. (Although some sources say it was incorporated on this date).
Ok, so September’s the right month. But why the 27th?
Well, apparently Google did indeed celebrate September 7 as its birthday for a few years.
Then it started moving things around for a few years. In 2002 the very first birthday doodle showed up on the 27th. Then Sept. 8, Sept. 7 and even Sept. 26 got turns hosting the birthday doodle.
Supposedly in 2005 the company was celebrating its announcement that it was indexing a record number of pages—although why it did so with a birthday doodle isn’t quite clear. Why not separate celebrations for the two events?
At any rate, the date has been September 27 since 2006.
