Not that you should need an excuse. Avocados are loaded with vitamins, and its fats are the good kind. That means you can indulge a little without guilt.

We have no idea who came up with this day or when. But it’s celebrated all around the web, so there’s no reason not to join in the deliciousness.

A Bite of Guacamole/Avocado History and Trivia

Guacamole is a popular snack food for many occasions, from that Big Football Sunday to Cinco de Mayo. And of course, National Guacamole Day.

But that popularity isn’t new. No, it’s been popular for a very long time—at least since the 16th century, when the Aztecs in Mexico first created it.

Not to be outdone, modern-day Mexico created the world’s largest serving of guacamole in 2018. It weighed 3788 kg (8351.11 lb) and beat the previous record of 2,669.5 kg (5,885.24 lb), also from Mexico. … How big was the bag of chips to go with that?!

A basic guacamole mashes avocados with some salt. Adding lime or lemon juice helps it keep its bright green color. Depending on your preferences, you can add all kinds of other things:

  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Jalapenos
  • Garlic
  • Cilantro (yuck!)
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Whatever else rocks your boat!

You can also use avocados in cooking and baking. Did you know you can replace some of your butter or other fats with avocado when baking?

And they’re amazing in omelets, on sandwiches, or just as a creamy snack all by themselves.

Avocados are high in fat, but it’s a good kind of fat. It actually helps reduce the amount of cholesterol in your blood.

Avocados also contain 20+ vitamins and minerals (more potassium than a banana). They may also help fight certain kinds of cancers.

With all the good things about avocados, wouldn’t you love to have an avocado tree in your yard? Each tree can produce as many as 400 fruits in one year. So you could have one every day and then some!

Come November 14 you’ll be able to celebrate this creamy, delicious green concoction again, for National Spicy Guacamole Day!

Ideas For Celebrating National Guacamole Day

Clearly you must eat guacamole and celebrate all things avocado.

Many stores sell premade guac, but it’s so simple to make yourself. And fresher is always better when it come to this delicate green mash that turns brown if it even suspects there’s air nearby!

Yes, yes, you can slow down the browning with lemon or lime juice. And as far as we’re concerned one of those juices is an integral part of guacamole. But it’s still better fresh!

At the very least, mash your own avocados and add store-bought guacamole spice mix.

But chopping up a few ingredients isn’t that hard. So for even better guac, try one of these recipes:

You’ll notice most of the recipes are very similar. It’s mostly playing with a few different ingredients in different amounts. So you could also just chuck the recipes and add things according to your taste.

Also, a couple of recipes suggest putting the pit back in the mixed guac to keep it from browning. This is an old wives tale. It does keep the guac immediately under the pit from browning because there’s less air getting to it. But it does nothing for the rest of it!

So if you’re not serving your guac right away, cover it with plastic wrap, pressed down against the surface of the guac to keep out as much air as possible.

You could throw a National Guacamole Day party, too!

  • Make different kinds of guac to share. Have your guests bring the chips or other things to dip.
  • Or have each guest make a different guac recipe to bring.
  • Or have a guacamole bar. You supply the avocados, lemon and lime juices, spices, jalapeños, tomatoes, onions and whatever else you like. Then your guests get creative. They can even bring their own favorite ingredients to add to the bar.

How many different kinds of guacamole will you be sampling for National Guacamole Day?
