September is all about happy cats. That’s right, it’s Happy Cat Month.

Of course, we want our cats to be happy every day of every month, all year long. But this month we put extra effort into making them extra happy.

The CATalyst Council created Happy Cat Month to help cat owners learn how to keep their precious felines happy and healthy.

And that’s important, because—contrary to what many people believe—cats aren’t little loners who can take care of themselves.

They need their humans to watch out for them and love them and give them a happy home. Even if they don’t always act like it!

Ideas For Celebrating Happy Cat Month

So how can you keep your cat happy this month and all year long?

Make sure kitty has plenty of outlets for his energy and curiosity:

• Get some new toys. Most kitties have their favorites, but something new can be enriching.
• Make one of those toys a food dispensing ball or a treat maze. If your cats are anything like ours, they scarf down whatever food you put in front of them in about 30 seconds flat. Then they want more. Talk about a prescription for obesity. Making them work for their food helps slow down eating and uses their natural hunting instincts.
• Consider subscribing to MeowBox. With this service kitty gets a box of goodies (at least 5) every month. Contents include different toys (catnip, squeaky, etc) and healthy treats. MeowBox even donates a can of food to a shelter with every meowbox you buy.
• A similar service is KitNipBox. This service works with a variety of shelters and rescues to support the cat community. Both services allow you to indicate you’d like them to replace any food items with non-edible goodies.
• Get your kitties their very own pets! Ok, not really. But set up a bird feeder in the yard where your cat can see the birds from a window. It’ll quickly become a favorite “kitty TV” spot!

 

Make sure kitty has safe places to retreat to, too. Especially if you have more than one cat. It’s important that they be able to avoid each other if they want to. Certainly in our house you’ll often see one who want to be rambunctious when the other just wants to chill.

Boxes, a pet carrier that’s always out, and cat tree condos are all good kitty-friendly spaces to have spread around the house.

A healthy cat is a happier cat. So if your feline hasn’t had an annual vet visit yet, now’s a great time to schedule that!

• Get any needed vaccinations, like rabies and distemper.
• Talk to your vet about other preventive care, like flea and tick treatments. Ask if your cat needs any of them.
