Observe Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Week in September
September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. It’s an official day, designated by presidential proclamation every year.
Other countries, including Canada, also designate September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
In the UK Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is in March.
Also in September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, observed during the third week of the month.
The Prostate Conditions Education Council started the awareness week program in 1989. This organization helps doctors, hospitals, organizations and businesses set up prostate screenings across the country and internationally. The events are free or low cost.
Prostate Facts
Although most men have a prostate, few really know much about it. They only learn about it when something goes wrong. So men who’ve had theirs removed probably know more about prostates than men who still have theirs.
So here are a few things to think about:
- Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in men. And men have a higher risk of getting prostate cancer than women have of getting breast cancer.
- One in six men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- Some men have a higher risk than others. For example:
- African-American men.
- Vietnam War veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange.
- As many as 2.8 million men get a prostate disease diagnosis each year. It’s not always cancer; it could also be an infection or benign enlargement. But for more than 230,000 men it is cancer.
- Many cases of prostate cancer are slow-growing, and the odds are good it’ll never be a problem. But even so, prostate cancer is one of the top causes of cancer deaths in men. If you choose the watch and wait option after a cancer diagnosis, make sure you get regular tests.
- Fewer men are dying from prostate cancer than even just 20 years ago. But tens of thousands still die every year.
